...or, they wouldn't have.

Red Dead Redemption 2 and Cyberpunk 2077 are distinctly different games made by distinctly different development studios.

They have a vastly greater number of developers working on Cyberpunk 2077 than they did on The Witcher 3 - on top of the industry and development know-how that they have because of their work on The Witcher series.

You mentioned Red Dead Redemption 2's development in comparison to Cyberpunk 2077 - that's like comparing the development of Super Mario Sunshine to Metal Gear Solid V.
It was more to let you know the amount of time and resources it takes to make large open world AAA titles. There have been plenty of titles that took 5+ years with development studios far larger than CD Red. It's actually a pretty fair comparison.

This post makes me incredibly happy :)

To be clear, I wasn't implying any inside knowledge on the release date or anything like that. However, it is a fact that Cyberpunk 2077 being in Pre-Alpha state does not necessarily mean we'll have to wait more than two years to play it. As pointed out already, several games were in Alpha state only half a year before launch or so, not to mention that different studios use the Pre-Alpha, Alpha, Beta terms in very different ways. I think that the game will be out between late 2019 and the first half of 2020 at the latest, and it won't skip current generation consoles if they can help it. It wouldn't make any sense financially to do so.

Some folks legit thought it was a pre-2020 game? I'd be very, very shocked if it came out in 2019, even December 31st, 2019. I expect this to be a 2020 or later game, and a cross gen title. I'll probably snag the PS5 version.

I am in total agreement with you.

That's actually better than I thought! I'm guessing they've already entered the mass production of content now. Maybe another 2-3 years? Clearly this will be a cross-gen title.

Either like GTAV was, where it released right before the launch of the PS4/XBO, and then the current gen versions released about a year later.

OR

It could be like Watch Dogs, and simultaneously release on all platforms.

My guess is the former.

There is not much to say. They have been saying that would take their time. Their last game was massive and was well received so this time around they have to top witcher 3 and that alone isn't easy.

This gen needs to be longer than ps3 gen to have a satisfying nos of games released.

Wait for next gen untill 4k is accepted more widespread and graphical horsepower is cheap and advanced enough to do native 4k at least at 30 fps.

Honestly, who cares? We know these studios are developing something, knowing what it is is not detrimental in anyway.

Eh, I think it's detrimental when they are big E3 announcements. I don't enjoy a show when I can't play the games for years.

Some games are still in pre-alpha 4 months before release. This doesn't mean much..

I have read this a few times in this thread. It's encouraging, but can someone elaborate? Doesn't it go pre-Alpha, Alpha, etc etc Beta etc etc..? How long are games typically going through these stages.

Pre-alpha is the longest portion of development, and whilst games can go from pre-alpha to gold candidate in four months, this game will not, obviously. It's not out any time soon.

But it also wasn't an announcement? It was just a trailer showing. The game was announced years ago.

It's also kind of funny to see someone with a Noctis avatar be disheartened by early announcements. That game looked really cool at E3 2006.

There's no clearcut rule for this I think. Depends on how the developer decides to name its stages and how they planned out development. Pre-alpha could last 2 years and alpha stage a couple of months or the other way around. I think pre-alpha is when they are still working on basically everything and when game systems and content is pretty much complete, but not yet balanced / refined it enters alpha stage. Beta is most of the time a complete game with bugs and performance issues still.

Thanks for the context! Then I should reserve judgement.

So what is the difference between prototyping phase and pre-alpha stage?
It is hard to say, it depends on the project and the studio. Often prototypes are designed to test very specific things, systems don't interoperate properly, like they would need to in a final product. Often prototype work is chucked. Prototyping is a lot more freeform, it doesn't necessarily follow a fixed production pipeline. But not always.

So basically it means nothing, but what the studio production says it means.

Honestly, who cares? We know these studios are developing something, knowing what it is is not detrimental in anyway.
Exactly. If you don't reveal anything, you get mindless speculation and whiny people complaining they don't know what the studio is doing. Leaks become potnetially more damaging.

People should stop being babies and accept the fact that games will take X amount of years.

Here are more impressions of the E3 demo.

It's a good discussion and worth listening to.

They mention since Cyberpunk 2077 is likely coming to both current gen consoles as well as next gen consoles, and the current gen consoles are probably not what you'll want to play this game on, which I fully agree with based on everything we've heard about the demo.

So they are teasing a game that will be for consoles that aren't even announced yet… They should have waited until closer to actually knowing a release window…I mean it was known they are working on this… considering the scope of this no telling how many years they are away from release…

If that's the case I'll be surprised it it comes a second sooner than fall 2020. Probably 21 or even 22.

They are still stating it will launch on current gen.

Current gen consoles are confirmed. Whatever the next gen consoles are capable of, the PC version will have that covered already.
