Gematsu here.

My bad for neglecting to mention, it's eShop-exclusive.

It's out worldwide as stated in the the PR. Highlighted part says Japan, North America, Europe, and Australia.

In Japan it's 3,900 yen.

A Wide-Screen Vertically Scrolling Shooting Game

RXN: Raijin is a vertically scrolling shoot 'em up with a 16:9 resolution that makes full use of Switch's wide screen. It will offer a new shooting game experience where players will dodge the attacks coming in from all directions of the wide screen, and attack enemies.

RXN-Original Special Move: "Awakening"

"Awakening" is an RXN-original special move that attacks the entire screen and slows the flow of time for everything other than the player character for a fixed period of time. Since the single use of an Awakening consumes one-third of the HP bar, its skillful use is the key to clearing the game.

Three Playable Characters and Various Characters that Enliven the Story

Players can choose from their favorite of three playable characters each with different attack methods. The characters that appear in Story Mode, who are fully voiced by wonderful actors, will enliven the game.

Looks interesting, but the performance looks iffy? Might just be the trailer... hopefully.

But how does Gematsu know it's out worldwide in December? I don't see any source of that. Also, Gulti worked on Rainden Fighters Aces and Mamorukan Curse, with the latter being localized by UFO Interactive in recent years. Could UFO be the ones releasing this game in the west? Would be their first Nintendo project since those 3DS eShop Johnny games. (edit: see above)

Thoughts?

Man, I don't understand how every Shmup hasn't made it to the Switch yet lol. It's the perfect console for it. Damn it, I want my CAVE games!!!

Why? Even with Tate mode, that screen is way smaller than any non-tated TV will be in terms of display. It's better than other portable devices but I don't see the advantage over PS4/X1/PC.

Not a fan of the gem colors in that trailer. Feels like they could be confused with bullets. Looks potentially interesting apart from that. Mamorukun Curse was decent.

No sale for me if it's a $40 eShop exclusive but I'm down if there is a cart. (I'm weird that way)

Well this is out of nowhere. Definitely want to see more. If it is indeed digital only, maybe Limited Run Games can get a physical release later down the line.

I can't turn my TV vertically...

Yep. Best platform for them and the ones on the platform seem to be doing well, judging by Strikers' position on the eShop charts and how fast the dev announced like 5 more games.

I'll buy every single one. SHMUPs are like crack for me. Along with side scrolling beat em ups and light gun games.

Treasure needs to license out their catalogue to M2 for some ports. Ikaruga with HD rumble. Mmmmm.

You can run your Switch on your tv too.

More options > Less options

That doesn't really have anything to do with shmups though. All games are better on the Switch if you care about that. I was replying to a post suggesting that the Switch is the ideal console for shmups and I disagree. It offers no real advantage. It's maybe the ideal handheld for shmups though.

Looks rough as hell, those are some low-res ass textures, and the framerate seems to tank whenever a lot of things are onscreen.

The advantage over other consoles would be it can do run them like they can on your tv, plus also run them in portable modes. There's no clear disadvantage with Switch but it also offers more.

Some of the animation looks a bit stiff but otherwise very interested.

Vertical scrolling on a widescreen is a weird choice, but more shmups is always a good thing for a console's library.

Which is the "all games are better on Switch" argument that I brought up in the post you quoted. As a console, the Switch offers weaker hardware which can lead to lower resolutions and framerates, slowdowns and inferior graphics. It is therefore only the ideal console if you need portability. Otherwise it's the worst current gen system on the market for shmups. I kind of feel like I'm just in this topic bashing the Switch at this point so I won't take the discussion further. I dig the Switch for many genres but I feel shmups are better played elsewhere.

Do most shmups even push hardware much other than bullet counts and all?

All things equal then yes, Switch is the best console due to diversity of play style. As you pointed out it's lower hardware spec can impact aspects like performance and image quality, however I'd also say current hardware specs are of less concern for this particular genre too. Saying Switch is the best platform for shmups is hardly a controversial statement considering all that.

I agree, the diversity of playstyle is what makes Switch the ideal choice of platform.
But also the ability to have vertical options without having to endure ugly ass borders adds to schmups in tabletate mode. Smaller vertical screen be dammed.

Anyway, $40 for a digital only title like this is quite steep. Rather have a physical cart.

It's on sale just got it. Kinda annoyed it will not work with my flip grip as it does not have tate mode.
