Walt Disney Co. is set to win U.S. antitrust approval Wednesday for its $71 billion purchase of 21st Century Fox Inc.'s entertainment assets, according to a person familiar with the matter, raising hurdles to a potential rival bid from Comcast Corp, Bloomberg News reports.

The Justice Department is expected to file an agreement approving the deal in federal court, said the person, who asked not to be named because the approval wasn't yet public. Disney was expected to agree to sell assets to resolve competitive harms arising from the merger, a person familiar has said.

Story is still developing.

Update: approval has been granted:

Walt Disney Co. won U.S. antitrust approval for its $71 billion purchase of 21st Century Fox Inc.'s entertainment assets, raising hurdles to a potential rival bid from Comcast Corp.

Disney agreed to sell Fox's regional sports networks to resolve the Justice Department's concerns that the deal would raise prices for pay-TV companies, according to court filings made Wednesday in New York.

Shareholder voting date set for July 27th.

Brazil
Federal judge ruling in favor of Disney

The actual news is that this has nothing to do with copyright laws

Yeah I am not gonna celebrate this. As much fun as it might be for Xmen and Fantastic 4 to be in the MCU , I don't like seeing a mega corporation like this absorbing something like Fox.

Was always a "who" not "if"

This is the best outcome being Fox was always going to be bought.

Comcast is terrible. At least Disney doesn't (currently) have the leverage to lock all of their content behind their services exclusively. This would have very much so given Comcast the ability to do so. From their network all the way to content provision (cable, OTT, Hulu, etc)

Funny, but Ma Bell owns DC now. . . The Mouse isnt getting that one. . . At least not without another merger, which may not be crazy. . . as I dont know that this would be seen as a horizontal merger.

That was a joke post. We all know that Marvel and DC don't belong together. I honestly hope that AT&T saves DC in film, we all need that win.

What Fox did with the X-Men was atrocious. Marvel Studios about to snap their fingers on these hoes

It would have went to another bigger megacorp anyway so whatever?

What assets are they selling? RSNs?
Thought this was always a Comcast provision if they got Fox for regulatory approval. I don't think Disney "has to" sell them... but apparently they are about 1/3 the total value. So if Disney just wants the assets and IPs that would probably be a smart sale.

Why are we so sure this shuts Comcast out? Can't they just come with more money and agree to sell the same things?

At least Marvel will be making FF and X-Men movies. (And they won't treat them like they don't exist in video games and other projects now.)

I know not how Kingdom Hearts III will end, but Kingdom Hearts IV will begin in Nakatomi Plaza.

Prior to it passing regulatory approval, what Comcast was doing was essentially trying to take Fox out of Disney's cart in the checkout line.

Post approval it is much closer to essentially trying to take Fox out of Disney's bags as they are at the register handing their money over.
