I really wish the Castlevania block wasn't smack dab in the middle of the workday for me. At least I should be around for most of the Metroid block; I go to bed around the time Super Metroid is scheduled, but I'm not really up for watching a 100% map completion run of that game again anyway.

Sad to see this friendly fellow get dispatched so easily during the Castlevania: Bloodlines speedrun when the Giant Bomb crew had so much fun with him.

We know what he's doing to generate his power.

"100% map completion" sounds like a really bad category for Super Metroid.

Yeah honestly it's kind of a joke. Obviously still really impressive to execute well, but it's a pretty silly goal, especially considering there's no item requirement. Add to that the fact that you pretty much need to play on a romhack to verify that you've completed the category. Still fun for me to watch since SM is my favorite game, but it's a lame category.

It's always pretty amazing to see a run with actual RNG manipulation (as a balance for all the jokes about it ;)).

They're also not even doing a race so it's a bummer all around. I hope for the runner's sake that he won't die to Phantoon...

Why do these old games have so few colors? The NES was capable of displaying more colors at once than this, no?

Not really. The NES has 54 colors that can be chosen from, but they must be used as part of palettes which are 4 colors each. For the background, it could use 4 palettes at once (with the limitation that the first color of the simultaneous palettes has to be the same, so basically 13 colors max for the background), and sprites can be comprised of one of four palettes at a given time (again, with the first color having to be transparent, so 12 colors for sprites at any given time).

Yeah, but the battle screens have like three colors. Lol. Oh well!

Do you see now why people so desperately want rolling physics back in 3D Sonic games

Sonic Adventure was messy but god damn was it's physics liberating

I can see why - some of these skips are pretty great

Always a joy to watch someone who has mastered the gameplay mechanics destroy a game like that

I have to say I do not like the changes in environmental shading for the DX port (Final Egg should really look a lot darker than it does) but the character shading in some of these stages felt next-gen for me at the time and still kinda hold up.

Look at how good Sonic looks on that final boss level. I get mild Unleashed vibes from it.

What is the accent of the British (Australian?) guy? He sounds exactly like the calculator unboxing guy from Numberphile.

Both Super Metroid and Skyward Sword are smack dab in the middle of the night? Who the hell plans this thing? lol
Super Metroid is not in the middle of the night, especially at the local time of the venue. Skyward Sword being overnight is very much on purpose, because it's an over 5 hour long run.

I get it, but at 11:00pm its impossible for me to watch. In fact, I don't think I'll be able to watch any of the Metroid block.

Edit: at least it looks like tomorrow is going to be a good day for runs

2am for me lol, really wanted to see what speed runners are doing with the game
Well you could check speedrun.com
It's nothing too crazy, just abusing advanced mechanics, doing everything really fast.

Shame it's any% race, it would be better if they ran B and C sides :/ The main game isn't super impressive, while later B sides and C sides are straight up insane.
