Kind of shameful that it took several years, multiple class action lawsuits and petitions, and a slew of high-profile Mac enthusiasts complaining before Apple acknowledged this issue.

At least this (probably) means the keyboard will be redesigned/fixed in the next revision.

"Finally"

Glad that they are stepping up to do the right thing. No one should be worried about something as basic as the keyboard going south and getting a $400-700 repair bill. Glad all the people who've had to pay are also getting their money back as well.

Apple really should have got out in front of this ages ago instead of letting it blow up as much as it did.

So given that Apple is finally footing the bill on keyboard woes, is the general consensus still that we should hold off upgrading until a revision comes out (I have a late '11 MBP that I'm gonna be needing to replace)?

Yes, both because they'll hopefully have a keyboard revision and because the next refresh should give every model two more CPU cores (13" goes to quad-core, 15" goes to 6-core).

If you can hold off do it. I have been reading strong rumors that a new Macbook could be pushed back to 2019 because of issues with the intel chips. Either way do not expect a new Macbook pro before late September.

I'd applaud standing up if Apple announced a MacBook Pro with just enough thickness added to bring back USB-A and HDMI, and a scissor keyboard. Which shouldn't be more than 2mm.

I'd probably cry, too.

There's no Intel chip problem, people just like scapegoating Intel to excuse Apple's failures. There are already new Intel chips ready to be used if Apple bothered updating their Macs.

Intel has pushed back releasing Cannon lake chips in mass until 2019. While they can use coffee lake chips, the lack of LPDDR4 support might be whats kept apple waiting for Cannon. Or it could be apple having to do a earlier than expected redesign because of the keyboard thats got things delayed.

Apple uses desktop DDR4 in their iMacs and those haven't been updated to Coffee Lake either even though the chips have been available for months. Not to mention they are using LPDDR3 in their MBP right now, so shipping Coffee Lake with LPDDR3 would still be an upgrade over no Coffee Lake at all.

Anyone have their MBP keyboard and trackpad freeze up for about 30 seconds now and then? Can be typing in word or safari and the keyboard will stop responding and the trackpad will become 'solid' and not click in

Man, stereo HomePods in my little bedroom sound fantastic... too bad it's just a test lol. I'm splitting the two up across other rooms of my apartment.

Happens for me too, well maybe not for a full 30 seconds, but annoyingly long. Started recently, sadly I have no idea what's causing it.

I'm trying to help someone backup their photos from their iPhone. I got them to buy iCloud data high enough to store all their stuff, and it has uploaded all their photos to iCloud (like 15000 photos). However, I want to then download all of those photos, in their original quality, to an external hard drive. You used to be able to go to iCloud and through the Photos app, either shift-click or command-A to select all photos. This doesn't seem to work anymore. Now, my only choice seems to be to command-click every single photo, which I'm not going to do since it is 15,000 photos, or try to get Photos working on their computer. The machine is still on El Capitan, but I don't see any iCloud tab in the Photos.app. Also, when I tell Photos to download the iCloud originals, it doesn't seem to download anything, and rather it says it is uploading like 11,000 photos, and it's been saying it's uploading for several hours now with no change that I can see (they have a fast internet connection).

Any suggestions? Upgrading their OS isn't an option. And, to make it clear, all photos are showing up in iCloud in Safari, but not in the Photos.app on El Capitan.

And, I don't know what they've done, but in the past they've screwed up their multiple login accounts when connecting their phones to their computer, so I'm a little worried about connecting the phone in the chance it tries to delete everything or do an incorrect sync (though the phone is supposedly backed up through iCloud).

No access to another computer that they can install the photos app on? How about setting up boot camp and install windows to use the windows iCloud photo app - that can sync all your photos to a folder on your windows install

Try this: https://www.tomsguide.com/us/how-to-download-icloud-photos,news-24697.html

Haven't tried it myself, but this is what my Google search turned up with, so sorry in advance if it doesn't work.

So you did the right thing, turning on download originals on the machine on El Cap. I know it says uploading now, but what it's doing is comparing all the photos that were already on the machine with what got uploaded from the phone and equalizing the two. When that's all done all the originals from both sources will be on the Mac, and you can then move them to an external drive.

I could try to log on through my computer, but I'm visiting family and trying to do it while I'm here. Boot camp on their computer is out of the question.

That's kind of what I thought, but it hasn't budged from its original upload of photos of 11,000 and they have fiber internet so I am worried that it isn't decreasing. I thought the culprit would be that they're still on El Capitan and an older version of photos.

How long has it been like that? That's not SUPER unusual since it also includes indexing the photos in the "upload" process

Noise canceling AirPods? Gimme that shit.
Though paying 250 bucks or so for earbuds is pretty ridiculous...

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/arti...-to-amplify-its-audio-device-strategy-in-2019
Yeah, the noise cancelling on the WF-1000X's is pretty damn underwhelming, there's really no use in putting it in earbuds, just eats up battery and does next to nothing for blocking out sound. And Sony is like head-of-class with noise-cancelling so if even they can't make it much of a difference, I don't see how Apple could.

I'm willing to be surprised though, but if it's going to cost me extra, it better be damn good.

Gimme black AirPods then I'll be interested.
You better bet the premium AirPods will come with a red dot or in a non-white color :p
I kinda expect the noise canceling to be good, it seems like it will be the main differentiator so I doubt they'll half-ass it? Who knows. Gonna skip the 2018 refresh in any case now that this is out of the bag.

AirPods are one of the best apple purchases I've made. That said, they are already pricey and increasing it for a premium version kind of sucks.

Photos on the Mac finally jumped from 11000 uploads to 2500. Happened in an instant . Wonder why it froze. Hopefully the download doesn't take forever now.

anyone have a wireless, portable battery charger? Would like something compact to carry with me in case I need to top up my iphone X, and with wireless it'd be convenient with no cables etc. Amazon don't seem to have anything except brands I've never heard of - presumably generic Chinese chargers.

I don't own it, and it's super expensive, but there's the QiStone+.

Personally I don't think a product like this is a good idea, you won't be able to charge it in your pocket or backpack or anything since it would have to remain on a tiny flat surface the whole time. That greatly limits how and when you can charge it (you'd need to be stationary etc)... So it's both slower to charge and far less convenient. You are better off getting something like the Anker PowerCore imo.

Mophie used to make a good one years and years ago that was a little larger than a lighter that clipped to your keychain, and it would charge half of a phone's battery. It was discontinued sadly, but it was a very nice portable solution that fit in any pants pocket and was enough to get you through emergencies. It also was before wireless charging was a thing, but it had a built-in lightning connector. I know it's not what you are looking for, but powerbanks with built-in cords do exist and are cheap.

But I saw AirPods even resisting a washing machine cycle? Never had any concerns about a bit of moist. I exercise with no fear already.

Swim proof would be the real deal, but also they would need to figure out how to keep them on while swimming.

You can't possibly hear with them underwater?
They'd have to be in ear buds for that no?
I think it's more that they're not currently guaranteed to be water resistant. If you wear them in the rain and they break, you won't be eligible for a replacement pair. A lot of people won't wear them in the rain for that reason, even though they actually resist water pretty well.

I wear mine in the rain but I'm rock and roll.

Ah yes, it's just the poster above me was talking about keeping them on during swimming hehe.

Yeah, I'd wear even the current ones in the rain.
I guess if they're going to do noise cancelling, the higher end AirPods will be in-ear rather than ear buds.

FWIW even if it's rated as "water resistant" Apple doesn't cover liquid damage as part of the warranty. This goes for phones, watches, PowerBeats, etc. It just helps prevent the damage itself.

I'm guessing that leaky AirPods with noise cancellation wouldn't be that great - perhaps good enough for a noisy commuter train/bus where otherwise you might prefer silicon in-ear buds

The rumors are completely mixing together Apple's high end overhead headphones and calling them AirPods too (I doubt that will be the name) with 2nd gen AirPods. I feel like noise cancelling might be just for the cans.

Personally I also don't need noise cancelling in the AirPods. I really like that I can go on with the day with them and sometimes I find myself talking to people and forgetting I have them on (if music is paused). Because of their true wireless nature, they feel like the direction to augmented reality.

Next step just implant them to the inner ear lol

Issue: Customer states that he just received his computer back from the repair center and it is now typing things on its own every time he moves the machine or uses it on his lap.

Steps to Reproduce: - I reproduced the issue in the customer's OS by picking the computer up, holding the right side of the top case. Text started being entered in the safari window that was active.

- Also reproduced the issue in a known good operating system by testing the same way and receiving the same result.

- Ran keyboard diagnostics and picked up the computer again during the test. As soon as I touched the bottom case on the right side of the computer, several keys activated without any actual key press. The keys that activated were "F6", "6", "Y", and "H", but testing in the OS revealed that there were several other keys that are affected.

- Ran keyboard trackpad mapper and then rebooted into the customer's OS.

- Reset NVRAM and SMC and booted into the customer's OS. While back in the customer's OS, the issue persists.

Cosmetic Condition: Dent in the front left corner of the top case. This dent was present before sending the unit for repair the first time and does not appear to have affected the functionality until after the display repair was completed. Overlooking this damage and sending to depot under warranty.
Proposed Resolution: Send to depot under repeat repair to address the keyboard issue at no cost to the customer.

Great job Apple! Just got my Macbook pro back today and it had to be sent back in. Another 3-5 day turn around. BTW this is on a 13" 2015 macbook pro
