Akkun to Kanojo 12

Festival pt 2, now with more tsundere imouto. Cute.

That closing firework scene felt like a good spot for the series to end, and I suspect that may have been the original intent since the second cour was announced so late in the day. But hey, I'm not complaining about a cute short like this carrying on a little longer.

Part of me wants to be depressed, but the dub being available a few hours after airing in Japan was unheard of. Good job, Funi. It was fun while it lasted.
yeah. no their simuldubs that are day of are crazy. Especially since it's not just in their hands.
If japan doesn't get them the materials in time they can easily have to rush things/ or not be able to do it.

I think they said it was something like 2 weeks. They have two weeks to get the script, translate it, dub it, edit it, and get it out. and in general their dubs are still way better than sentai.

their simuldubs are usually a few weeks behind so if they don't get the materials of day off they can still release them on time, but I think on average it is something like 4 weeks between materials and release for most of the shows, and they have a lot of these going on at once anymore.

Magical Girl Site 12 END
That was a really heavy-handed "go read the manga" ending with all the hooks of possible future arcs while avoiding any meaningful resolution for anyone except the seemingly OP Aya and Tsuyu.

It's not surprising. GGO's production was fraught right from the start - they knew in advance that they would have very little lead time to get ahead of production to the point that the recap episode was pre-scheduled way in advance, something you won't normally see with healthy production schedules. A1 has the advantage in this regard, and it shows. A shame that they got the inferior source material. Would've been nice to see GGO adapted with similar production values.
Yeah, I like what we got but man does SAO look so crisp, vibrant and detailed in comparison.

GGO also didn't even attempt camo on half the character designs that have it while they had it a few times in SAO.
(small details but it actually kinda ruins some character designs without it)

So I am watching One Piece for the very first time, but the Crunchyroll quality is very much accurate to the time period of the anime. It is like I am backing watching Dragon Ball episodes on RealPlayer that were downloaded as fake mp3's through Napster. Artifacts everywhere. Quite the waste of my 55" 4K screen. Is there any other legal streaming option that has One Piece but in proper quality?

Warning, major Ashita no Joe spoilers and speculation:
Yuri taking his integrated gear off to fight on Joe's is a pretty interesting sci-fi parallel to Rikiishi undergoing extreme weight loss training to fight in Joe's weight class in the original

Rikiishi died after that fight and with the next episode being the last, I'm guessing either Yuri dies or both of them die.
It will be interesting if they really do this as I am sure they know people who watched the original are expecting this.

Maybe they will "twist" it and go the other way.

Hisomaso 11

I think a lot of things concerning Hisomaso would improve if they changed how events are framed. Like, in this episode it feels like Hisone was on the wrong. She quits a toxic place and she is labeled as the villain, she literally has to beg in order to come back. Leaving in the midst of her job is technically a mistake but it's not like she had much of a choice with how things were proceeding anyway. Meanwhile, the rest of JSDF isn't really portrayed as doing something wrong. Hell, Kekiyasu's actions didn't have any consequences despite being really petty.

Also, it's kind of funny how many things the superiors hide from the D-Pilots. It feels like a human right is violated in every episode now.

There was a "suddenly gay" moment in the episode but then it turned out that I was right about Yukiko and Yuri.

FMP IV 9
Not a particularly great episode, with obvious cost-cutting measures throughout. 57 days is a long time to be in a coma.

I cried. Multiple times. I can't help it, Deku and All Might are a lethal combination for me.

My Hero Academia Season 3, Episode 12:

This was structured like the end of a One Piece arc with all of the commentary on the state of the world and foreshadowing future happenings and such.

Boku no Hero Academia S3 - 12

Was not expecting all those feels from Deku's mum, but it makes a lot of sense. Such good character dynamics.

Always nice to see the other kids' families, too. The resemblances are fun.

Mahou Shoujo Site 12 END

Well, I suppose that's about as conclusive an ending as we can expect from a show like this that was clearly in way too deep to reach an actual conclusion within a single cour. There was catharsis at least, and the most prominent villain was defeated, so I'll take it - even if none of the core problems were really solved at all.

It's nice to know that Aya and Tsuyuno will be able to be "happy" together for a at least a little longer.

So Boku no Hero is getting a female centric spinoff series. And we all know what that means...YURI. Everytime they do a female centric spinoff series it turns into a yuri show.

Hisone did absolutely nothing wrong. She thought she was being an obstacle due to her feelings and thought quitting would be best for everyone. The commander was trying to come up with a reasonable solution and Kakiyasu lost her shit.

Kakiyasu was a pure bitch this episode out of jealousy and Hisone is the one who has to apologize? Fuckitty fuck that.

Amanchu! Advance 12 END

Ahhhh, the night diving! What a good experience to save for last. It really did look magical. This show is so good at making me want to try diving myself (while also reinforcing that it's actually way too much trouble for me ever to bother, lol).

A lovely end to another lovely season of a lovely series.

I think they did a great job with the conversation between All Might and Deku's mom, dealing with her very real concerns about Deku's safety and well-being since joining UA. It would have been nice to have the scene breathe a little as opposed to it kind of being seemingly resolved instantly, but it worked overall. As an example, the weekly break between manga chapters and the pacing there worked to heighten the intensity and resolution as opposed to how matter-of-fact it felt in the anime.

I'll be looking forward to see how they handle the next batch of episodes.

Devils' Line 12 END

It feels like we haven't actually achieved much over the course of this series - the villains never really got taken care of, the treatment of vampires by society never noticeably improved, Anzai never gained much more control over his instincts than he always had and is still plagued by self-hatred and doubt, etc. But steps forward have definitely been made, however small, and at least Anzai and Tsukasa still have each other.

I actually didn't mind the overall message reached near the end of the episode and that hope of finding that thing you would do anything for, as well as got a little choked up at Nana mothering that one parasite. It sucks that actual decent moments are buried under layers of melodrama and poor writing and characters for those brief moments to shine.

Animation quality aside, it was great to hear Kaneshiro's dungeon track again and the extra scene with Makoto and Ann was a nice touch. The baton pass bit was at least better than their other attempts to introduce game elements, though it's still a bit rough. Seems like we'll get more SoL stuff next week. I'll be pissed if we don't get Yusuke's most iconic scene with Joker.

HisoMaso 10
I'm still not big on the whole jealousy aspect nor how they go about resolving it, regardless of how it fits into the plot of the show because it comes off as disgusting to me. Especially considering the impact it could have on the rest of their lives. At least by the end of the episode, I was on board with Hisone's decision.
HisoMaso 11
I'm fine with the solution Hisone found out of all that, which is probably a better way to deal with the OTF issue even if the process to get there was actually dumb. I guess it does fit with her character tho. Also, they finally show what's been hinted at for several episodes. Maybe that bit from early in the show might make a difference this time.

This feels like a long overdue episode in respect to Deku's mother trying to intervene after all that he's been through, and I can't help but sympathize with the stance she takes during her meeting with All-Might over U.A.'s plan to create a closed campus. That whole scene feels like a wonderful amount of catharsis for every time Deku pushes himself too far in pursuit of his heroic dreams, and it's nice to see Deku's mother take on a bit more of an active role in her son's life rather than simply being the person they cut to fretting over his exploits for a cheap laugh. It was nice to see a little look into Bakugo's living situation as well, and to hear their response to Eraser Head's words about him believing Bakugo still wishes to become a hero. Now that the campus is going to be closed and they'll be staying there for the foreseeable future, I have to wonder how they might end up interacting with League going forward, especially since I doubt they'll be laying low for long.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood (aka S1: Eps. 1-9)
So, in honor of Part 5 not only being confirmed but only a few months from now, I felt I should stop dragging my heels on finding out what JoJo is all about and why its become such a pillar of the community since David Production's revival exploded a few years back. While I don't have a great deal of information about the series outside of what I picked up via osmosis from community discussions, memes, and references contained in other shows, I did know not to expect Stands to show up for some time into the series' overall run, but instead to anticipate something closer to Fist of the North Star early on. So, between last night and today, I decided to crack open my BDs and watch Phantom Blood to get a taste of what I would be in for.

Honestly, it's not too bad. While I do think that calling it anything other than a Fist of the North Star clone at this point in time would be generous, its effective characterization and pseudo-historical setting is more than enough to help set it apart from its seminal predecessor. Even this early on, there's a sense of irreverent levity to all the bravado and machismo that really helps to buoy out the heavier, dramatic elements in a way that doesn't feel inconsistent with the show's overall tone. I think a lot of that is the framing of the tone, which applies almost any action with a dramatic weight that can be either tense or funny given the situation, and allows for characters to have moments where you as the audience invest in their struggles be it because it's humorous or because it's heartbreaking. That's solid storytelling, which lends this otherwise ridiculous story of two brothers' war with one another some semblance of weight.

The setting is the other really standout thing which helps to make JoJo stand out. While it doesn't leverage it as much or as well as I had hoped in Phantom Blood, the bizarre "alternate reality" that this tale exists in
where the big bad turns Jack the Ripper into a vampire who's defeated by an English nobleman using techniques taught to him by a wandering magician who learned those skills from a mystic he found in Tibet
is a fun, silly romp that wouldn't feel out of place as a plot of a Castlevania game. It's dumb but amusingly so, and weirdly helped me to get all the more invested in what would otherwise be a fairly standard tale of sibling rivalry.

And so, this was a successful start, and the nice thing is knowing the series as a whole only improves from what's already here. I hope to check out Battle Tendency soon, as I get the feeling the show will really be able to find its feet. I can only hope Joseph is a bit more interesting than Jonathan.

P.S. Just a few things about the production itself. I really like how distinctive JoJo is from a lot of modern anime in terms of its look. From its color palette to its use of characters for sound effects to its framing integrating far more of what I imagine was in the original paneling than I'm used to seeing, it's not hard to see why so many people dig the look of the show in general. While it's tempting to think David Production's work here is reminiscent of studios with a particular aesthetic like Shaft, I know DP is capable of more distinct and varied styles rather than an overall series of artistic tells that translate from work to work, and so this is one they created purely to best translate JoJo from page to screen, and I think they've done a fantastic job finding that from the get-go. I also adore the use of traditional rock music in the ED, I hope that's something they continue to use going forward.

Well, I don't think you'll be disappointed on that front. He's not many people's favourite Jojo for no reason =D

Persona 5 the Animation - 12

That boss battle was pretty snazzy, as action scenes in this adaptation go. Loved all the high-five baton-touches.

But more importantly, now the Makoto/Kaneshiro arc is over, we're SO close to the debut of the only character who really matters! I'm guessing we'll get the first official glimpse of her at the very end of next week's episode, since it'll probably be another in-between-arcs antics session. Bring it on!
