It needs to be a standard. Cross play, cross progression (account based), etc.
Microsoft and Nintendo jumping on it definitely helps with third parties — like the recent SEGA tweet. That's why it's important for Sony to get on board. Change will fully happen then with no hesitation if all three are on board. As it is, companies have to walk the line around Sony or you could get a Fortnite account situation.
While it seems cute, Sega endorsement is.... weird. Like Nintendo and MS, Sega also went up against the PlayStation but unlike Xbox it didn't have a billion dollar company to cary it, nor a handheld market with Pokemon etc like Nintendo. As a result, Sega was reduced to a 3rd party developer... my favourite Sega franchises are either dead, cancelled, or on hold and the Dreamcast lives on in our memories now..
Here is hoping that Nintendo teaming up with MS saves them from a similar fate.
Having said that; Super Smash with Master Chief, Marcus Fenix, Milo (Molyneux) and Blinx the Timesweeper would be legendary!!

I really hope MS teams up with Nintendo for more projects. Switch would be the perfect console for an on the go Forza. And Mario Kart would look amazing in 4K 60fps on an Xbox One X.
So what you're saying is that Nintendo is "teaming up" with Microsoft because they fear getting destroyed by Sony? Yikes, that's one way to read the situation I guess.

I merely thought the Sega 'endorsement' felt like an Omen. If teaming up saves them from that then I am all for it! The market is stronger with more players as history has taught us :-)

Just the usual blocking crossplay, and it's been speculated their account hijinks are why the Switch got a streaming client rather than a native port.

I think people are reading into it too much. Sega were just joining in the fun, which I found kind of cool!
I agree with your last point though. Maybe not swapping of exclusives but a close partnership would be good.
PS if there is any comfort in it, Xbix seems to have become the de facto Dreamcast successor, with the amount of Sega games available via BC :)
