the lineup looks great to me. i personally know that there won't be a time where i want to play something on the switch but don't have anything to play
i'm actually mostly excited that i get to replay two of my favorite games of all time (twewy and okami) soon.

I'm sorry but the only games I see are

Octopath Traveler (waiting for reviews before I'm deciding)
The World Ends With You
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 dlc, but I have yet to start the main game first

Rest are multiplats, ports or downloadable as I see it

Over the next 6 months, there is 1 game I'm interested in playing on my Switch.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker.

I debate every day whether I need this console anymore or not.

Every day? That must get tiring.

Goodnight Switch. Good work. Sleep well. I'll most likely sell you in the morning.

I don't have anything to play in 2018 on other consoles.

Switch has Xenoblade 2 DLC, Pokemon, and Smash. Will get 3x more playtime than 2H of last year.

Looks like a great list of titles this year, theres at least 2 games a month I will be picking up and that doesnt include any of the neo geo or indie games I might pick up.

I think part of the problem is that Nintendo really came out swinging with Zelda, Mario Kart, Poken, Mario vs Rabbids, Mario Odyssey, Splatoon 2, Fire Emblem Warriors and ARMS all coming out within a year. Most of those are one a generation so its kind of unreasonable to expect Nintendo to release sequels to those games just a year later, these arent COD games.

So there's this weird pattern going on where people are disappointed that after last year's focus on big new single player first party adventures; Nintendo's 2018 lineup does something completely different. Thus some people feel there isn't much this year they want to play. And then the response to that is this heavy handed rhetoric of busting out the lists; yelling about objectivity and calling them idiots with bad taste for feeling the way they do. Plus, there's this weird thing of thinking the disappointed people think Nintendo are doomed. Nobody thinks Nintendo are doomed, it's clear they'll be financially successful. But some people care more about what games they, personally, will be playing this year; and less about corporate profits.

Just let people be disappointed and stop jumping on them.

I have the same thoughts. 2018 might actually be better than 2017 but there isn't something like Zelda and Mario. But that doesn't matter. There are too many games to me to play. I have bought shitloads of games and the summer lineup is crazy. I have no time for the games like Ys VIII.

Except in this case and many others, OP is not disappointed, isn't calling anyone an idiot, and says nothing about corporate profit. Yet the thread is -as expected- full to the brim of drive-by "no fun allowed" posts by people who are definitely implying, if not outright saying, that OP and anyone who agrees with OP is deluded and has a narrative.

Gaming is my main hobby so I keep a detailed track of money spent and hours played. Switch's lineup in the first half and second half of the year for 2018 is a bit lacking for me personally.

For hours played in 2018 my PS4 makes up ~71%, my Switch makes up ~15% . That reflects obviously the first half of the year from start to middle of June.

Out of the 13 titles pre-ordered through the rest of the year, 3 are on the Switch (Dead Cells, Mario Party, Smash) with a huge maybe on a fourth (Monster Hunter, probably pass as Yakuza 2 and Spiderman close in release). One game is on the Xbox One (And is actually free with gamepass so debatable if I am "Paying" for it) and the remaining 8 are on PS4. I pre-order everything and cancel at a later date if I change my mind. For whatever reason I seem to always finish a game I pay full price and a game on a deep sale or get for free (PS+, Gold, Twitch Prime...etc) has a high chance I don't play it to completion.

I am not saying its "Worst year ever, 2018 Switch sucks!" because there are still some quality titles but looking at my spreadsheet, it is lacking.

If Switch is your main or only console though I highly recommend the following for "new releases" this year:
  • Hollow Knight - Its as close to perfect as a game can get. Around 40 hours into it for $15 for people on a tight budget you will also get your moneys worth.
  • Iconoclast (Later 2018 release on Switch)- Another "Metroidvainia" but with a deep story, gorgeous art/animations and very fun start to finnish
  • Bayonetta 1/2 - Its fun, each will run between 10-18 hours. Oh its also absolutely bonkers both in terms of animations and story and I loved it!
On a side note, I do appreciate them releasing a demo for Ocotopath as I confirmed the game wasn't for me day 1. It played out quite slow (In an hour I rescued a lost book and had some nice chats with npcs) but if I am going to spend 60-80 hours I will need a little more engaging story. Gameplay felt solid though, hoping that continues in the main game and I am wrong about the Story portion though!

Ninja edit: at current pace Switch wont get to half the time I spent playing it in 2017. There were some absolutely great , longer games released in 2017 though so take that how you will

The demo didn't really feature any of the story though. It was just prologue chapters for each character.

If you didn't find the characters engaging, fair enough, but we haven't seen any of the story yet.

Personally, I really enjoyed the introductions for Tressa, Cyrus, and Primrose. I'm ready to go on an adventure with them!

OP is right, but it won't stop the thinly veiled console war rhetoric. The legit concerns of actual Switch owners who want more software that matches their preferences are understandable, and the Nintendo threads wouldn't be so irritating if those were the only critics showing up. It's the "Smash is a port" and "But Labo!" crowd that are derailing every Nintendo thread and making threads like this feel necessary. I've been guilty of taking the bait myself, but I'm learning to tune it out as the bad faith arguing that it is.

The reality is that the Switch is a big hit, and the only area of debate regarding that is whether its second full fiscal year will be the best of any console this generation or fall a bit short of that. It has an incredibly deep catalog for a console at this point of its life cycle, and just needs a few more first party AAA experiences to satiate the needs of early adopters who bought it on the strength of wanting a steady stream of games in the BOTW/Odyssey/XC2 vein. Not a bad place to be sixteen months in.

Exactly my thoughts.
They went from DLC only to selling it physically, just like TLL.
It's going to be a big expansion...

Yeah, the DLC is really big enough to warrant it's own release. Last year TLL was counted as a release by the media and by us so it would be strange to ignore this one that does the same thing.

Vastly prefer last years lineup. Quality > Quantity.

There's not much I want to play on Switch compared to last year, it's as simple as that.

Splatoon 2, Rabbids, Odyssey and Xenoblade 2 are all incredible games. If you're not into Smash, 2018 isn't nearly as enticing.

I'd agree with this if it included the corollary of also letting people be satisfied or enthused and stop jumping on them, too.

Sorry for me it's a bad lineup for Switch with only 2 games left on my radar the entire year. Last year I bought a $60 game almost every month.

Definitely will try out another character, only did Cyrus so far. By story i mean more of how fastly things developed. For his prologue taking an hour to go over a fairly tame portion
well leaving the kingdom is big, but the whole there is a missing tome and spending an hour over a book
is a harder sell for me since I might not always have an hour straight to play and jumping in and out for something to develop like that can be a downer. Hopefully reviews/player impressions will clear up .

Gameplay is definitely solid

Do we know how big it'll be?
  • "Almost a whole new game's worth of content", being sold as its own standalone game or as DLC
  • New combat, rearguard / vanguard mechanic that changes up your arts entirely
  • New battle theme that's jazzy, new field theme in first area (has woodwinds)
  • Weapon equip system in the accessory menu
  • Very somber, darker tone in the DLC: tragic feel to the story
  • Camp mechanic: crafting, chatting depending on party members w/ different topics, everyone in the party can make different things from cooking to other materials
  • New combat UI changes
  • Two battle themes reused, whether these will be replaced is unclear (The reused battle themes were Monster Surprised You and You Will Recall Our Names, he thinks)
  • The story will work as standalone as a prologue to Xenoblade 2
  • Can switch between Drivers and Blades as playable characters at will
  • Talent arts are back from XC1
  • Mythra's arts are the same from XC2
  • Returning to titans, you will see them how they were 500 years ago
  • Rearranged themes for the titans you revisit (like Gormott)

H2 2018 is absolutely fine. It's getting to the point where there are more games I want to play than I have time for. Of course it's also a bit of a testament to how bonkers 2017 was that there are still a bunch of those games (West of Loathing, Hollow Knight, Wolfenstein 2) in my mix. In terms of big hitters, the first console Pokemon and the ultimate Smash bros will be huge deals no matter what.

It's fine. It's not great, relying on DLC of last year games (Splatoon and Xenoblade) that I will probably be more fan of than anything that releases this year, but all in all fine.

H1 though WOOF.

I ended up getting the season pass on a whim, but didn't expect to get basically a whole game out of it, so I'm very pleased with how things have turned out.

It does kind of show that when you build something directly off a previous game, you can work quickly. More of that please!

Here's that list of the same exact shit that did absolutely nothing for those people this thread is about, whom this thread was specifically made for, so they can come in, see their is absolutely fucking nothing new say their needs aren't being met by this all over again, for the express purpose of getting everybody who has a corporate worshipping hard on for Nintendo to go in and shit all over people who come into this thread specifically made about them with whataboutisms, fallacies, boxing, and other forms of outright non engaging dismissals, without ever actually adressing anything they say....

Yet again.

Gaming side.

How many times is this going to be done?

Nintendo's been doing a poor job showing "the full picture" for the future of the platform like other console manufacturers are, but yeah, 2018 is gonna be pretty good.

Do kind of like that they're revealing games closer to release, but I hope they find a middle ground to avoid people getting so mad all the time
Pretty much this. Their schedule is fine, they just need to explain it better.

But I'm really glad you made this OP. Forgot some of these were still coming. Switch is definitely getting some good games coming.

It was easier for them last year purely because of the 1, 2 combo of GotY contenders with Zelda then Mario. Smash Ultimate is their main gamr this year in comparison.

I think the problem here isn't really that the Switch lineup is bad in objective, catastrophic terms. The problem is it's weak relative to what other consoles are receiving.

You can't fight RDR2 and Call of Duty (and a dozen other big hitters) with Captain Toad and... Pokemon? I mean, the Pokemon audience is already onboard. They've already bought your console.

My plan was to wait it out for Luigi's Mansion Switch. This way it gives me time to get my money right. But with Octopath Traveler makes me want to jump in and buy a Switch neow. Definitely curious how that'll review.

I don't care about portability so my Switch is only really used for exclusives. Going by that, this year has been incredibly disappointing so far. No joke, buying Hollow Knight was the first thing to make me turn my Switch on since January and there's maybe one or two games for the rest of the year I'm interested in.

Thankfully I have plenty of stuff on other consoles to keep me busy until 2019 when things kick off again with Fire Emblem, Pokémon, and Metroid Prime.

I think it comes from the Switch being a secondary platform for most and since pretty much all games are multiplatforms that are compromised in one way or another (GFX or FPS and such) they tend to get the games on other systems and the rest are late ports that people either already played or have no interest in. For me this year there's basically only Octopath I'm looking forward to, so while that might not be objectively true, it's a weak lineup in my eyes.

For me personally there are less games i would like to play on switch this year than last year. But will definitily buy Ys VIII, MHGU and Octopath Traveler. Most of the 3rd party games i played already on other platforms.

So a bunch of ports, Pokemon *wait for next year" edition and Smash at the end. Right now it seems Octopath Traveler would be the first and last Switch game I buy this year. Much worse when we add how disappointedly weak the first half has been. I buy Nintendo consoles mainly for Nintendo games, and from a single player perspective, this year has me in disbelief. Fire Emblem and Yoshi gone, and there's nothing to really make up for them. I was expecting much more from Nintendo, maybe it's my own fault for buying too soon into the "joined studios" narrative.

Pillars of eternity and wasteland 2 will fill up my gaming time quite nicely. Until those come out there is yss 8 and octopath traveler and maybe an action game like Mario Tennis and Wolfenstein. Plenty of stuff to dive into for me.
