Hopefully every one of these idiots gets banned. I'm fine with people putting funny images like the one above, but to put a pornography pic for children to see is disgusting.

Good grief, I thought all profile avatars were just located in a .dll file but apparently the console uploads the client picture to the service?
Was Nintendo planning custom gamer pictures at some point?

1) DLLs on ARM?

2) A Switch on older Firmware needs to be able to view profile pictures introduced in newer FWs, that's why it's synced and not picked from a local file.

It is possible to laugh at something you find disgusting.
That's exactly what I said to myself when I first saw your avatar :P

Still, it's pretty disappointing there's no way to report abusive behavior on the system whatsoever. You'd think it'd be a part of the system day one...

Ah, that makes sense. Thanks!

I know little about ARM, so that's on me :P

THis looks funny or harmless to some (not me) but yeah, you are potentially exposing childs to pornography.
If a person showed a pornographic image to a minor, he or she could probably get to jail.

If think they should treat the people who modded their pictures to show that filth knowing children play wii and would see it, as such.

Just to set an example. Track the persons with modded porno pictures and prosecute them. Have a US judge look at the situation, also to send a message that exposing children to pornography, even in a videogame, is illegal

And yeah huh I didn't realize there was no way to report this. Bizarre for a family friendly system.

This about the children! No wonder Sony is so good at protecting them.

Jokes aside, people are great at finding ways to get banned.

I immediately laughed my arse off until I quickly realised that kids are going to see this shit... This needs to be fixed asap.

I really hope Nintendo has an easy fix for this though because if not they're going to have absolute nightmare on their hands.

Out of curiosity, which games other than Super Mario Odyssey actually display your profile picture ingame, unsolicited, to other players? The only other Switch online game I have is Splatoon 2 which doesn't display avatars.

Good thing is that Nintendo could actually automate the bans, they just need to check every user's profile pic and check if it matches any of the pre-installed ones, and if not, they ban it.

That's not just "a tool". That's the devmenu.

It was leaked yesterday. It's the official Nintendo application to control the Switch from its very basic functions, like installing NSP apps. To say the Switch has been blown wide open is the understatement of the century. At this rate, we'll be seeing low-level access and control in the scale of the 3DS within a few weeks.

Needless to say, it's illegal to distribute that application (it's not homebrew!) and you'll get yourself banned as soon as Nintendo catches you toying with it.

...wait, hold on. the devmenu? like, straight up? oh, wow. the switch isn't even that old! wonder what nintendo will do? that's crazy. if that's true, the avatars might be the least of their problems.

That could be a bit hard with all the legitimate custom Mii profile pictures...

Aw fuck, I forgot about that.

Yeah, someone was lucky and got a dev unit, probably the first ever in the wild.

Yup. All the encryption keys from the devkit have been posted online.

As an interesting note: the devkit has access to special Nintendo lotcheck servers. That's how hackers were able to datamine the Splatoon 2 3.1 update a few days before it released.

Whenever something like this happens, I always think of Holden Caulfield being pissed off at people who scratch "Fuck You" into public places where kids will see it and ask what the word "fuck" means.

I get where dude is coming from on that one.

Very smart of these "hackers".
As of now Nintendo is only banning accounts/consoles that try to play their pirated software online. With shit like this spreading it cant be too long until they band everything homebrew related.....thats why we cant have nice things.

I bet Nintendo can easily catch these guys by just querying the account database. Either way, these people will be banned. If Nintendo is smart, they will also ban the Switch the person was using.

First Labo introducing kids to programming, now this introducing them to the miracle of life... Nintendo are really on a roll with the educational stuff, aren't they?

User warned: Don't downplay the possibility of children being exposed to porn.
Understood. Hopefully Nintendo fixes that and closes this loophole ASAP.

Yep, nothing more 'hilarious' than a 6 year old seeing pornographic images. Jesus Christ.
Well sure it is bad and Nintendo needs to fix it, but come on, it's a little funny. It's an absurd situation and it's ok to have a chuckle at it.

Edit: Already quoted a few times, but editing this to be less stupid as I clearly crossed a line.

They should just change the system of setting mii character avatars to be rendered on server side
I don't think there's any need to ever upload predefined avatars, since they can have all of them preloaded on server too

I dont think anyone using early hacks is losing sleep over bans. this has been a modus operandi for console devs since they day they were capable of doing so.

They will lose sleep when their console and account are banned. Remember, paying another $300 for a new Switch plus $20 for a new Nintendo online subscription hurts.

LOL how short sighted can you be even if YOU are ok with that kids don't need to see some 30 year olds floppy fucking man meat. On top of that who is to say assholes wont be uploading gore, shit, animal fucking, pedophilia and so on.

No this shit is fucking horrible.

I agree, they should! But that's not something they can implement quickly (would require hardware provisioning, server-side software development *and* a firmware update).

There's not a quick, easy fix for this and given the potential fallout I'm interested in knowing how Nintendo will deal with it. Swapnote got terminated under similar circumstances - maybe they'll disable the loading of profile pictures until they fix it properly?

Nintendo isnt bricking consoles. Its safe to assume whatever theyre doing wont render their switch useless and theyll still be able to play most , if not all, games. Been ages since i delved into this stuff but i remember there being ways to replace the console id to go around the ban

Inserting your own switch profile pic is cool, but course this kind of thing is going to turn up.-_-
