Future NPD threads could really use a big flashing banner advert describing how Game Pass downloads are (not) counted in the totals...

@Sales experts - A thing I am curious about, rather than "Game Pass viral marketing via friend list" or other potential reasons for such stonkingly good SoD sales, is perhaps is this to do with the $30 price point? "Tentpole" releases launching at half price (with the exception of remasters) are very rare, right? Are there other recent examples? I can't think of any. Is it at all possible the big business machine has just become so entrenched in "sixty dollars is the standard price" they are doing it wrong and MS has stumbled upon a more optimal price point regarding launch revenue?

And MatPiscatella , can you confirm there are no tracking errors with Dark Souls Remastered? It seems absolutely mind-boggling it didn't appear in eithjer the top 20 or the individual console top 10s, given some of the other games charting. Can you share where it would have placed, should the chart be extended enough places for it to show?

What makes the 30 dollar price even better is SoD2 being number 1 is based on revenue. So they had to sell a shitload.

Everything matters, to different extents, in regards to how a launch performs. No one thing is THE thing. Quality, marketing, promotion, streaming, box art, pricing, distribution... I mean if math could be done to backwards engineer a sales number it would have been done already.

Not surprised with SoD2, people still love zombie games, even with the bad reviews. Days Gone will most likely do better, I also think it'll review better, at least 80+ meta. Also I have no doubt Days Gone will also be played a lot by streamers/youtubers, even Detroit did pretty good on Twitch.

Somewhere in the region of 79 million, give or take.

The Xbox One is at 37-ish million (about 24 million in the US alone ~ roughly 65% of total sales) whereas the Switch is at 17.79 million as of the 31st of March.

They used to happily reveal the sales for their (big name) games back in the Xbox 360 days though, whether they were part of a subscription service or not.

If Sony comes out to say Detroit: Become Human sold a million copies in a couple of weeks, why don't Microsoft do the same for State of Decay 2 (or even Sea of Thieves), which has in all likelihood sold more than the game that charted at #3 did?

And in all fairness, I don't really count them as 'points'. Just a publisher being happy to share their sales success with the gaming community, the developer and their fans, and shareholders too.
Easy worldwide Detroit sold more, Europe love those kind of games and even in Japan sold better than Heavy Rain. Detroit could have sold more than those games worldwide.

Yeah GP as it is right now is pretty good. It's just that I have no faith that this is its final form and what MS intended years from now. It's only the start of the process and the start is always the best as it's meant to hook in as many people as possible. It's meant to look like it's too good to pass up.

Five years from now, there will be probably 30 more first party games that are available for you to play when you subscribe. It may cost a couple bucks more per month but it will still kick ass.

Not too sure about that. New single player ip vs sequel with added multiplayer. Though it should do better than what most of era expect.
YouTube has been a great indicator of "success" and while SoD2 did good, Days Gone has been doing even better. Days Gone wasn't even shown at Sony's press conference but the show floor demo has more than 3 million views just from 4 channels. Compare this to State of Decays 2 last years E3 which also has 3 million but Days Gone did this in 1 week. I also think Days Gone's E3 2017 views are around I think 15 million if I remember correctly.

I have no doubt in my mind that Days Gone will sell better than SoD2.

Man I really miss getting PR to dissect and analyze. Having no PR just makes NPD so much less fun.

Oh and yea not having the platform breakdowns for multiplats also still sucks.

I keep hoping I will click on an NPD thread and be greeted by a big fat pile of PR and platform splits but alas it is not to be.

They made the Dreamcast so they always win.... in my heart.

SOD2 tops the charts and Nintendo has their best May software-sales since 2011.

Talent. Always. Wins.

Gamepass is the best review/demo you can have I guess but then again, why buy the game even if it's 30 bucks?
I've got gamepass but im buying certain first party games still.

1. To show support to devs for their brilliant games, i want them to keep making them.
2. I own the game outright and it cant be revoked

This pertains to Forza Horizon, Halo, Gears, SoT and any other game i feel meets the 2 points.

I would imagine it's more a case of your friend has it (through GamePass), so you just buy it to play with them/because they said it's good. Not people who already have it through gamepass buying it separately, which is probably a tiny amount of people.

I don't understand why they would waste money and buy the games though. They are not demos...they are FULL games. Plus with bing rewards its easy to pay for your games pass monthly fee for free. The only games pass game I'll actually "buy" over the next 3 years in Halo Infinite because Halo is my most beloved franchise. Everything else I'll play for free on the service.

The funny thing is you DO understand why, and readily admit you will pointlessly waste money and buy Halo: Infinite when you need not!

Hey MatPiscatella y'all track digital sales for Bandai Namco right? If so Dark Souls Remastered not being in the top 20 at the very least seems crazy to me. I have a really hard time believing it sold that poorly given the other metrics we have surrounding the game's release. Any chance you could comment on that at all?

Nevermind I just saw this

Thats nuts. Id have assumed it sold well enough with digital included to make it at least into the top 20. With it being a budget release I'm assuming it would have made it in to the top 20 units list at the very least if its ranked at 21 by revenue.

The month-to-month hold at 5 by DKC: TF impresses me. Surely this game is outperforming the Wii U version significantly.

State of Decay is a surprise for sure. The fact NPD is based on revenue and the game is $30 tells me it sold a ton. I think a lot of people treat Game Pass like a demo service and if they enjoy a game they purchase a physical copy to keep. Unless, State of Decay is a XBLA title again and can only be downloaded. That wouldn't make any sense.

Retail is dying for games which everyone knows about. Once we do move all digital Sony and MS will have all of the power. When that happens MS can easily cut off the ability to buy games altogether and stick everyone on GP (which will progressively get more expensive as time goes on). That is the netflix model but for games, you don't own anything and are at the mercy of the company to get your content and pray it doesn't get taken down. Right now is the start of it and easing people into accepting the idea of not owning content and just renting it.

If that ever happens it is because that is what consumers are demanding. Your whole comment sounds like fear mongering. Instead of supporting another option to buy games and the success it brings you want to talk 20 years down the line and act like we are all doomed unless we sign up for Game Pass.

People often ask, why does Microsoft sell Xbox machines if they are putting games on the PC? Well month after month we continue to see high growth in console software that is also on the PC. Therefore there is still demand for console hardware, pretty simple. Right now there is still large demand for physical software for those consoles. So why would Microsoft ignore them any more than Nintendo just because Game Pass is growing?

Phil was surprised at what Game Pass is doing, it is increasing software sales through it. One is actually helping the other you think is going to go away. It's a total contradiction.

Keep forgetting that MS releases their games on two platforms now, and we like to compare exclusives yet it's not really fair now since it's on 2 platforms for MS but 1 platform for Sony/Nintendo. Really wish we could get numbers for just Xbox. According to MagicPork, it seems that SoD2 (Xbox version) couldn't even outsell Hyrule Warriors.

Gamepass means millions of players for first party games, thats guaranteed, it really is a stroke of genius. I dont think anyone could have predicted sales rising because of it though, that even shocked Phil lol.

Will it be what they actually want though or are they being groomed to accept it right now by MS, who's made gamepass such an attractive offer early in its life? That's a big part of the point I'm making, what's going on right now is the training part of the plan. Easing people into the idea of "renting" these games so they get used to it and don't care when it becomes the only option. Most people will just say "well I've been using it __ years already so nothing's going to change for me" and go about their lives.

There is no such thing as "just Xbox" when it comes to digital copies of play anywhere games. So either you look at only retail (which is dumb), or you look at digital (which includes Xbox+pc).

SoT(incomplete game), SoD2(buggy game) and PUGB(buggy and lagging game) selling too well setting a bad tone and publishers will get away releasing broken/unfinished games more in the future promising they will patch in the future. Seems like gamers does not care playing these games especially on MS consoles (may be lack of exclusives?) and I hope other publishers or at least Sony do not follow these GaaS service trend and releasing broken games.
