$15 is worth it IMO. Hate playing vertical games on a wide screen in landscape layout. I also couldn't see Parish putting his name on something that would kill a console.

Flip-Grip-with-Switch-Iso-150x150.png

An entire vent is covered as well as about a quarter of the second vent, with some slits to allow air flow around the locking tab. Then on the top vent, about 1/2 to 2/3rds is covered again with some slits/"wiggle room". Did you mean 80% of a single vent is uncovered? Because there are two on the back and one on top. I don't see any reason why there can't be even a partial vent hole above where the tab is, there's plenty of room for one.

People buying and using them and reporting real world actual impressions of no issues, not the people selling the thing saying stuff to sell the thing, will change my mind. Like I said I think it's a cool idea. I'm just extremely skeptical about the execution and paranoid about anything that covers the leaf blowers on the back and top of the Switch. If it comes out and people use them and everything is fine I have no problem being wrong, in fact I'd prefer to be so I can buy one and play Donkey Kong and Dig Dug in their proper orientation and I doubt Nintendo will make anything like this on their own. I have the HORI stand but it's flimsy and there's no way I'd use it in vertical mode.

Actually, you know what? Those same back vents the grip is "covering" up are also covered up by the official dock when you play on your TV. If having those vents covered in docked mode (which actually generate MORE heat in that mode), do not cause an issue, then the grip should not be an issue at all either.

This is neat but I honestly can't name 3 games I would want to play using it.

I would have passed on this if the price weren't oh-so low. I know it's just a chunk of plastic, but we're in a day and age where I expect stuff like this to retail for $30!

I actually 3D printed a similar one of these for myself. You can find the file for it on thingiverse. It worked well for the orientation, although I choose to cover my card slot.
The issue is have with this is the same issue I have with mine .I cannot easily carry this in my Zelda special edition case, because it is 2beeg. If this had some sort of folding feature, or two part assembly, I might buy it.
Otherwise I just suggest anyone with access to a 3D printer to try printing it yourself.

How many games make use of that orientation?
It's a cool idea but outside of Namco museum and ikaruga do any other games work in vertical orientation?
Has anyone started maintaining a list of all vertical supporting games on Switch?

There's 21 games listed on the kickstarter page with 7 more on the way.

Games that support vertical modes

Classic titles are being re-released on the Switch at a rapid pace, with new ones coming out each week.

Many Switch re-releases of classic titles, like those from Namco and SNK, include display options to rotate the game's display 90º for games that appeared in arcade cabinets with vertical-mode screens.

On previous consoles, few people could make use of vertical-mode orientation features — it's hard to turn a television sideways, after all. A few PSP games supported rotation, but playing an intense arcade shooter while you grip the top and bottom of the PSP was far from a great experience.

The Switch changes everything. Because you can remove the Joy-Cons from the system, we can finally play classics like Punch-Out!!, Galaga, and Strikers 1945-II properly in vertical mode.

Shows how much I use the Switch in portable mode. Still, they performed tests, and there was no issue.
I'm sure the people who made the Mini Docks and USB-C chargers performed tests too. I'm sure Nintendo themselves performed plenty of tests yet we still get threads complaining about scratched screens.

Actually, you know what? Those same back vents the grip is "covering" up are also covered up by the official dock when you play on your TV. Heheh go pop the back door on your Dock open, there's a giant hole in there for air flow:

And while you can't see it unless you take that hub apart, there are venting holes inside the hub on the right under/between the USB and HDMI ports (and you can see them on the top of the hub there too)

But whatever, I backed it. It's $15 and using it for Donkey Kong and Dig Dug I can't imagine the Switch possibly needing enough air flow for it to be a problem. I'm still paranoid about it though.

Edit:

Of course Parish decided to do this on his own, he should!

Now if only someone would find a way for me to unlock all the power of the Switch in handheld mode. (Someone please tell me they have.)

Damn you! Stop destroying my posts with your facts!

Anyway, this is the brainchild of Jeremy Parish. He's an honesty guy, and huge retro gamer. If he says he has performed tests and there are no temperature rises, then I believe him.

Yeah I've come around to it, purely because of the retro gaming factor. Playing these old arcade games is a different beast than something like Zelda or Smash so the Switch isn't going to be putting in work to play them like it would with modern games.

I'm still anxious and will probably wait until I hear impressions before I actually use mine but I'd rather have it and wind up not needing it than want it and not have it. I might have missed it when I read the Kickstarter but I didn't see anything about them being released in stores so might as well get one now.

Did I spot Punch Out in that video? I had no idea that was on Switch. Same as the Hamster ACA Donkey Kong?

I printed mine today from there and the fit is SUPER tight. I am actually worried I'll scratch the Switch by sliding it in. Did you sand paper yours down?

Just a tad. More in the joycon area, mine was a bit looser, but snug. I normally put it on not by sliding, but by pushing it on from the back.

I asked jeremy about it.

Right now they need to the funds to secure the manufacturing of whoever backs it. Once the money is secure, then they can build the molds (which are usually very expensive), and then start the manufacturing.

My guess is that once the molds are made, and if there's enough demand, they can make more and sell them in stores or even through themselves.

Usually accessories don't linger too much in their availability, so the best thing is to get one now before they are not produced anymore.

Cool idea.

My larger takeaway is Guerilla War is coming to Switch? I loved that game in the arcade and on the NES, though the latter was a severely gimped conversion.

I've been using a Kid Icarus Uprising stand to play stuff like Punch-Out and DK vertically and it works well enough but I was following Parish's talk about making a grip with interest. Gladly backed

This is so dumb, I mean it's one of those looks good, but in practice ask yourself the pressing question: what input type do most, if not all of these TATE mode games benefit from the most.

The answer is a D-Pad or at least non-analog digital input such as the directional buttons on the left Joy-con. The directional buttons are too low on the left Joy-Con and this setup makes everything too top-heavy and unwieldy. It's a cool idea, but it is just too sub-optimal in the real world. Get a Hori Stand or other vertical Stand or a rotating monitor if you want to have fun with TATE mode, otherwise you are asking for a clunky, top-heavy, sub-optimal experince.

Cheers, I'll try that. I actually think going at it with a Dremmel might be the best option as sanding could take a while!!
Eh? Really? It doesn't need that much a sand imo. What orientation did you print it?

As someone who 3D printed this themselves and used it, no, the setup is fine.

Backed.

Looking forward to playing Punch Out and some of the vertical shmups like Ikaruga on Switch with this device.

I am so in for this! I just hope the creators (Parish etc.) get their money in before the inevitable Chinese knockoffs occur :(

That list also doesn't include Pinball FX3, Pinball Arcade or Stern Pinball Arcade, all of which support 'tate.

Argh, Just realised that because the USB-C port is blocked off, I won't be able to use a BT USB-C dongle for audio :( Obviously there's no way around this at all, just sucks a little.

It actually has two of those three, but I do think the list is missing quite a few other games, just can't recall them atm.

This looks really well-designed, very reasonably priced and I've always appreciated Jeremy Parish's work -- I watch every episode of Game Boy Works and NES Works. Godspeed to these folks, I might just pick one up myself someday.

Just to clarify because it seems there's no room for nuisance with your wording here, you do consider a Switch in an official Nintendo dock to have its vents completely covered, right?

Yeah...
Let's just say I'm going to side with Jeremy Parish on this one...
If he says it's good, it's pretty damn safe to say it'll be good.

Jon had to remove the air cooling entirely in order to coax his Nintendo Switch into overheating.

Yeah, I somehow glossed over the two pinball games already in the list! Aero Fighters 2 is tate as well, isn't it?

I will try The Pinball Arcade when I get home as it is not listed. The Kickstarter mentioned that two games with TATE functionality do not work with the Flip Grip, but Jeremy does not recall which.

I backed this as soon as it popped up today. It's the only thing I've ever backed on Kickstarter. Looks great and the price is perfect.

Damn, preorder cancelled. Good thing you already tried the product and gave an honest objective review of it.
