Certainly for the last few years, but it's hard to crown them pro consumer king for the generation when they started off on such a wrong foot. Granted they changed very quickly but still there was a solid year where you couldn't buy an Xbox without a Kinect which was basically taking an extra $100 from consumers.

Phil Spencer is the best thing to happen to Xbox. Now that he has a budget, i think things are really going to start showing how good he is.

The idea of praising a company for only doing a small number of incredibly anti-consumer things is a bit gross. They are the best of a bad bunch at the moment, a position they hold after being thwarted in the attempt of trying to drag the consumer into the pit of the abyss at the start of the generation and now must be on their best behaviour to repair the reputational damage.

Not America
Insert company name- "Desperate __________ is the best ___________"

Last gen it was Sony and now MS. It'll be interesting to see how things progress from here on out.

Well yeah they had to do something since they didn't have the games this gen otherwise they'd literally have nothing going for them as a gaming company. When you have a glaring flaw you have to find other ways to make up for it, especially when the flaw will take countless years to fix.

I would still hesitate to say pro consumer though. I don't consider gamepass a pro consumer move when looking at their long term strategy. Their BC is the gold standard to copy though.

Yep! Microsoft's pro consumer policies are what made me lean towards the Xbox One X for my token non-Nintendo platform when Monster Hunter came out.

Whichever gaming company has most recently gotten their wrist slapped for being anti-consumer becomes the most pro-consumer for a while. MS tried to be extremely anti-consumer at the start of the generation, suffered a significant loss of market share as a result, and have been better since then. This is the cycle, if/when they find themselves back on top again, they will once again start being shitty. None of these companies are your friends.

Also, even now, some of their efforts in the PC gaming space hint towards anti-competitive intentions.

So sort of? But definitely not out of any kind of moral superiority.

I would say this yes. But this is a prime example of why competition is good. I really don't think we would see these kind of policies, if it wasnt for Sony taking the lead. MS is competing.

That said, I don't want to be too cynical. So perhaps all of these would have been implemented at some point. But I really do think whoever is the "leader" in sales, tends to play it safe, and not make as many pro consumer moves. Only when they have to.

But let's not forget, they were doing anti-consumer things at the end of the 360 era, as well as the pre-launch of Xbox One. SO...

This applies to Sony and other companies as well. It isn't one side or the other (PS3 for example)./

People who love MS pro-consumer actions are the same rooting for EA/Ubisoft/Valve acquisitions and exclusivity?

But yes, now they are the most pro-consumer.

They need to keep this up next gen in terms of bc and those new studios need to deliver on exclusives to complete the renovation. I'm super happy with my one x.

No, since they tried very shady stuff THIS generation. The dialed back due to backlash, that doesn't mean it should totally be forgotten. Cross-buy / play with PC is imo the only truly pro-consumer thing they did, because it actually gives you a new choice.

Lol no. Like it or not, the family cam drm brave new world maneuver was the most egregious anti consumer move we have ever witnessed. And it happened this gen.

They didn't follow through due to backlash. Others are following through despite it.

They started the generation with the most insidious DRM scheme ever concocted. They can never be the "pro-consumer king" after that.

Pro-Consumer after their consumers left them. Anyway, they still charge me for online play so I can never call them pro consumer because of that.

I'm pretty sure 2013 is when XB1 launched and is thus part of this generation so yeah, its relevant.
Yes, but to ask if it is king one does have to compare to other platform holders.

So you can take some of the stuff at 2013...(Most of which no one ever experienced as 180 happened pre-launch...only thing people "felt" was mandatory kinect) but it still gets dwarfed by what they have done since...and this generation isn't over either.

There is no such thing as a "pro-consumer" corporation.

They are part of a broader strategy to win back customers lost at the start of the generation and also to compete with Sony which remain way ahead of them.
It's all strategies to increase revenue.

Of course they are technically "pro-consumer," but the ultimate goal is to increase market share at all costs.
It was the same with Sony when the Xbox 360 was way ahead during the previous gen.
This. 100%.

Well they're objectively leagues better than Sony in this department.

There's a few more things I'd still like to see them change though

I think the intentions behind it (being last place) shouldn't matter. They are still doing unlimited cloud saves, game pass, adaptive controller, ea access, cross play, etc. They have the most pro-consumer console this gen and that's indisputable. Hopefully this pushes Sony and Nintendo to adopt some of these features and practices.

Do you need to pay a monthly recurring fee to play online games on their platform?

Out of necessity, yes. I can't imagine Microsoft would do half of the things they've done so far if they were in first place. That said, I'm kinda glad they're in the position they're in right now, you can only go up from here.

No but they are becoming more consumer centric in exploring various business models.

These things come and go. Whenever one gets out front they seemingly forget everything they learned in the previous generation and need to be humbled to start leading the pack. Only for history to repeat itself over and over. The problem is management changes, and what one person understood, completely changes the next asshole executive.

With that being said, Microsoft definitely has painted a brighter picture of gaming future with a couple of key points.

1. A vision of cross play across all systems
2. Complete backwards compatibility of all Xbox products ever that is improved free of cost on new systems.
3. A more inclusive system that allows disabled players to enjoy the system to the fullest extent with accessibility options and special controllers.
4. A library of games included in a Netflix like monthly pass, with day and date releases appearing on the service.
5. An emphasis on striving for the most powerful hardware, not the best bottom line profit from hardware

I love what Phil Spencer is doing with the brand. I mentioned this in the Minecraft Crossplay thread, but if Sony doesn't wake the fuck up I don't see any reason not to play third party games on Xbox.
