The parents showed incredible restraint. You could easily see the mom got immediately uncomfortable - even when other people tried to intervene he still wouldn't let go until the (I think?) dad wasn't gonna take any more of that shit.

This isn't an issue with religion. This is an issue with an old man being an asshole. Old man or not, clergy or not, I would've not shown anywhere near that much restraint.

The way the fathers expression changes, if the priest wasnt holding the baby I think this whole thing would have played out a lot differently.

Translation (of what I could get)

Priest: "It's a tantrum, he is just doing a tantrum.
I am going to drop water on his forehead, and cheek ... And after that we will kiss the kiddo, because he will then be a little Christian."
<child continues to cry>
"Ohmyohmyohmy"
"Calm down."
"Calm Down." <hard slap>

Child cries even harder

"CALM DOWN! "<Grabs the kid's face>

Mother: "No..but, he is afraid, it's not a tantrum!"

Priest: "You must calm down!"
Other Woman grabs the Priest by the arm- "Sir!"
Father: "Hey!"

Priest: "You will get calm, you will get calm." / grabs head closer to his face
<child cries intensifie>
Father (hard to understand) grabing child. "No No..."
Father pulls child away, Priest grabs further
Mother: "Let him Go!"

The idea of infant baptism is absolutely baffling to me.

That said, this priest should be reprimanded and removed from any baptism duties.

A kid next to me got punched by the priest in his forehead when we were getting our confirmation . . . This was the mid 90s. I don't think this is new behavior.

Wait...something else must have happened after the video cuts right? The dad looked like he was ready to react.

If I was forced to be celibate for life I'd be slapping babies too I guess. Better than raping them though at least.

We had a child abusing priest at my family church growing up and he used to knock our heads together or punch us in the back or give us a nasty tackle during football. Don't recall anyone ever raising a protest about it, least not that I was aware of. I was a child then of course.

This doens't have much to do with religion, but more with a dementating guy that lashes out towards a child. I've seen this before with old people that just can't relate anymore with children and do shit like this.

You can see the tone of the room change the moment he does that. When the baby was crying, everyone was just standing around awkwardly laughing to themselves, but when the slap happens you see the "Oh shit" cross everyone's faces. The guy who I'm assuming is the dad is trying to pull the baby away from the priest before the video ends.

Speaking from experience it's a bit of a hassle to get done later on in life, like circumcision.

... i'd rather someone have the choice of getting it done then it being done to them without permission.

Edit: but that's a discussion for another day; I realized it will just derail the thread; my bad.

It's just a Catholic thing, right?

I've only attended non-denominational churches... baptism is something you choose to do. And it's not the process of becoming a Christian. I don't get why they do it to babies either.

Yeah that gnarled goblin looks like the type to manhandle a child. The older generations can be pretty damn backward in their toxic notions of discipline.

Nasty old bastard, slapping and yelling at an upset infant like that's remotely fucking reasonable. Good job, you idiot.

That old man must have a death wish, I know I wouldn't have the same restraint if anyone tried striking at any one of my family, let alone my infant child.

And he starts grabbing at and choking the traumatized child in the end.

Pretty much, my parents told me I legit kicked my priest in the face during baptism. Dude didn't smack me, and if he did my fathers reaction wouldnt of been so restrained.

Dude needs to not work with the public if he can't handle his duties properly.
