What I meant was I would kill the skeleton wheels, then get summoned into somebody elses world, and when I returned to my own world the skeleton wheels would all be back to life. Wtf.

Anyway, Pinwheel is now diggity-dead. Painfully easy boss, but it was actually a super close-call because my controller batteries died seconds after I beat him. Phew! I got the mother's mask.

I'm worried that I sequence-broke the plot. Wasn't I supposed to meet some dude in the Catacombs? I didn't see anyone other than Leeroy Jenkins.

Now to figure out how to get back up to Firelink.

edit: holy shit the skeletons are back after I killed them all and then killed pinwheel.

Edit edit: holy shit one of the skeletons made it to the blacksmith and nearly killed him. WTF GAME.
There's some dude near one of the bonfires, a very trustworthy dude. If you missed him you'll still run into him in the Tomb of the Giants.
Holy Whatsit Rhea went into the Catacombs but she got lost so you have to go past Pinwheel's room to find her in the Tomb.
Also there's some scary massive bonestorm whose covenant you can join. He's actually a boss but if you use the coffin elevator near the Titanite Demon in Catacombs he won't stab you up.

Bonewheel skeletons are total fuckers.

Woah wait, was the bonfire near the skeleton blacksmith not in the original game? Is this a remaster addition?

I checked and he wasn't where he was supposed to be. I think it's because I talked to him on his way down with the M'Lady lady and her high school doofus friends, and then talked to him later at Firelink when he was all emo about losing her. As long as I didn't sequence break my way out of the plot I'm happy.

Now to do undead asylum and biggity-blighttown.

Nah not that dude.
Patches! I didn't even know you could meet him in Catacombs until my fourth time through there.

First timer here, I just got thru the catacombs and I'm in the Tomb of the giants, just got pushed down a pit in a cutscene by some cunt and I'm back at the bonfire. I'm planning on going back up the ladder and killing that guy, any reason I shouldn't? Also I'm getting slightly jaded with all the underground/dark locations. Anor Londo was a welcome (annoying) break after the sewers/blighttown but then after New Londo and the Catacombs and the TotG, I'm starting to get a bit of cabin fever.

When he asked if you're a cleric, did you say yes or no? If you said no, spare him for now. If you said yes he'll attack you if you talk to him again.

He'll give you some free shit at Firelink. And then you can kill him in the sunlight and get a good view of his painful demise.
Nice. He is gonna get what's coming to him.

On another note, I'm at SL 76 I think. I have my str 40, dex 18, Vit 30 and End 30. Strength doesn't increase when I level anymore with my +5 BKS so between now and the end of the game I'm just going to raise Vit and End to 40. Will I be ok for damage till the end of the game. The boss in the catacombs lasted about 5 seconds against me.

First time playing through - amazing game so far but I've just reached the Demon Ruins and I can't stop giggling - people we're not kidding when they said it was unfinished. Even the enemy AI is borked. I was trying to use my bow to pull the capra demons one-at-a-time but they just stood there taking the hits until they dropped dead. I'd be offended, but it's so bad I can't help but giggle.

I think I can see that area from where I am now in the Tomb of the Giants. I'm not really enjoying the second half of the game all that much, I wonder if there is much more to go.

Yeah, first half has definitely been tighter, but I think overall the level of quality is pretty consistent, I've not yet found Lost Izalith and I've only explored a little of the Tomb of the Giants so I've got a little way to go. Would have preferred one more brightly lit area towards the end as it's gotten a bit oppressive during the last few hours. Still having a blast though.

Yea the darkness is bad enough but I can barely see 10 cm in front of me. On an OLED it is pitch black, I died 3 times from falling after defeating the boss in the catacombs.

Get a skull lantern or the light spell. If you have a skull lantern and use it as a shield you can hit the left bumper to illuminate the area around you. The light spell is better as you don't have to continuously hold down a button to be able to see.

The demon ruins and lost Izalith are the absolute low-point of the game. All the other 2nd half areas are pretty decent.

I got the lantern in the pit so I should be alright now. I don't even know how magic works in the game, never went anywhere near it.

Well, that's good. You can actually get a skull lantern from the necromancers above the tomb. But that's luck-based. But if you'd gone the magic route you'd just need the spell equipped and to press single button once with a wand and you'd have a light above your head for a few minutes before you have to do it again.

edit:
That aside you could also buy prism stones to mark your way and check for falls. I suggest you max out on them before you go to another area as it'll be necessary. Basically they cost 10 souls a pop and you can drop them and they'll stay on the map and glow. Additionally, they'll scream if you drop them down an unlivable distance.

Which weapons did you use for your build?
I started with a Divine Warpick (first boss Butterfly, then to Andre to ascend/buy the pick). That's what I was trying to kill Vince & Nico with(!), then a Partizan, then eventually I settled on the Great Axe. Farming humanity in the Depths I picked it up and thought I'd give it a go since I usually stay clear of strength weapons. Horrible range, but decent damage. I used Sunlight Blade as a buff.

Anyone have an opinion on this? I think a standard 1-handed swing of my BKS is doing about 510 damage.

You reached the softcap in STR it seems. Stats still increase but it might take 2 or 3 levels to eek out 1 more damage point. Not really worth it imo, might as well dump some more points into VIT/END like you say. BKS +5 with 40 STR? Yeah, you're good for the rest of the game, NG+ and onwards! :)

Uhhh ok so I accidentally fell down to the Catacombs Black Knight, and clubbed his ass ten ways to Sunday, but now I'm stuck here...

Those pinwheel skeletons eat me alive. I can barely even touch the ground before they kill me. Sheild is eviscerated in seconds. I killed one with a black firebomb but I only have one left. My arrows do like 14 damage to them. Am I "boned"?
This is a great farming spot for a bonewheel shield because they all gather underneath you, backstep off in to a plunging attack and you take out all of them in one hit! :)

Pinwheel is a joke boss, one of the easiest one in the whole series, so don't use it as a reference for what's to come next. Anyway, you should be more than fine in terms of damage output if you have already hit the softcap for STR. If you plan on doing the DLC (you definitely should), you'll find the hardest and best bosses of the game in there

Thanks guys, I'll just keep going with end/vit for the rest of the game then. I can still increase my damage by leveling dex but it only goes up 1 point so it doesn't seem worth it.

The real bosses of the catacombs are the bone-wheels. Pinwheel is the developers way of giving you a bit of pity after getting through all that.

The last necromancer you kill has a guaranteed Skull Lantern drop actually.

I didn't actually know this.

Almost done with my Plat run, just need to make a few Boss Soul Weapons for Knight's Honor. Crazy how good you can get at this game with practice. I went from a brand new NG++ to beating O&S in less than an hour with only one death from a mob extending way past his roam location.

Also a funny story, I forgot you had to leave the room after Gwyn to trigger the Dark ending, so I accidentally lit the last bonfire. Halfway through the cutscene I had to run over and unplug my PS4 to stop it from triggering the other ending for the Trophy. Thank God that worked, when I logged back in I was still in Gwyns room with him dead.

Now, now, we're friends now. See? You wouldn't hold a grudge would you? Right, bruhv?

Patches is in every FROM game. And, I wouldn't kill him since he becomes a merchant in Firelink Shrine and drops some interesting bits of dialogue if you talk to him. He's probably one of the best merchants in Demon's Souls.

So I finally finished last night for the first time. I haven't finished 2 and 3 yet but I'd say that Dark Souls is my least favorite out of Bloodborne, Demons and Dark, despite it being an awesome game.

Bosses weren't that memorable (outside of O&S which was an incredible fight) and the level design post Anor Londo was pretty bad (felt rushed, uninspired, etc).

I also felt that the enemy challenge disappeared entirely after O&S. I was level 68 at the end of the game with a Lightning Zweihander +5 and fully upgraded Black Iron armor and on most bosses I barely had to use an estus (and I'm generally not very good at videogames)

Jup, i also did a Zweihänder build for my first playthrough and PVE was wayyyy to easy.

Agreed. The fact that you could spend all of your souls on Vit and End meant that there was too much room for mistakes in the second half.

Unrelated, but I started playing hollow knight on the switch and it gives me way more of that Bloodborne feel than Dark Souls, surprisingly

Anyone have any suggestions on which souls game to play next? Should be able to wrap up ds1 this weekend. Had an absolute blast.

For reference I own all the games plus DLC, including bloodborne. Souls games I have on PC and ps4.

I'm playing through DS3 right now and I'm actually disappointed that the bonewheel guys are such pushovers.

I mean, they were infuriating before, but they just feel like shells of their former selves.

I beat the game last night, it really got its hooks in me towards the end. I kept planning out what I would do the next time I played, thinking of which weapons I would try to go for and how I'd upgrade my gear, etc. The last boss was a cakewalk though, I did not expect that.

If I'm honest, though, the most satisfying part of beating the game is that I can finally appreciate that Fangamer art print -- it's fun to zoom in and recognize landmarks. Feels like being let into a Cool Kids club

anyway, great game. Curious to see how I reflect on it as time goes on

Gwyn's all over the place depending on your build and/or parry abilities. You can tank him or parry into oblivion, but if you don't have either in top form (and don't resort to the estus cheese), it can be a very intense fight. That was my experience anyway.
