I have been kinda not looking forward to this day for some time. I went to my cardiologist about 2 months ago, and after an echo and an MRI they concluded that one of my heart valves needs to be replaced, along with most of my aorta. So tommorrow I'm having mechanical substitutes for both installed.

This is largely the result of a minor congenital valve defect that has been slowly mis-shaping my heart for most of my life. Since I was a child it was always pretty much expected that I'd need replacement hardware sooner or later, but that hasn't really made getting the news much easier or less stressful. The surgeon rates the chances of success as very good, and if all goes according to plan I will be back to mostly normal life in a couple months (aside from having to take blood thinning drugs for the remainder of my days). I won't have to have anything else done for decades.

I generally don't discuss health or personal issues here, but on the off chance that I don't make it through the surgery I thought I would mention it. I've been on some iteration of this forum since before the Playstation2 launched, so something did not rub me right about the possibility that I might just disappear without a trace or an explanation.

If you all don't hear from me again, so long and thanks for all the good times! Otherwise, I'll be back soon with even more time to waste on ResetERA since I'll be off work for two months' worth of recovery time. Take care and be good to each other!

Oh, man. I just attended the funeral of an older person (78) who died a day or so after having open heart surgery. Good luck, OP.

Good luck buddy. Hope all goes well. And trust the doctors. They have already said you'd need a replacement, decades ago, now trust them to do the replacement.

Ignore this OP. You don't even know if he is lying.

I am not lying. Anyway, the person whose funeral I attended was 78. She had had a similar surgery ten years prior and her circumstances were probably different than OP's.

Nevertheless, OP, you should have an advance directive and make sure that if things go wrong, your affairs are in order. I could just say that everything is going to be perfectly okay, but you need to be prepared.

Well isn't that comforting.

Oh my god, did you think the OP was fishing for pragmatic end-of-life advice, or perhaps instead hoping for a reassuring word or two before a big operation?

Hey! I had maybe the same thing (aortic valve needed to be replaced) when I was 14. Gonna have to do it again sooner or later since I didn't go mechanical.

Real talk--the first week of recovery is the worst thing on the planet. But then you'll have the scar and can make up stories about how you got it so...kind of worth it.

Anyway, good luck! And you'll be fine! These surgeries actually like, never go wrong.

I mean, it's still a good idea. Everyone should make sure their affairs are done and wills are written before they go into potential life threatening surgery.

Prayers my friend. My uncle went through something very similar and he's better than ever! You will be fine!

You got this.

I have had a mechanical aortic valve for 5.5 years now. It takes a while to fully heal, but you'll be up and moving pretty quickly. Its pretty amazing considering how major the surgery is.

Good luck, OP. My grandmother had three open-heart surgeries, with her first being at 26 years old, and lived to be 81. You'll do fine.

Telling someone that they should prepare for a potential negative outcome is far more useful than thoughts and prayers. I apologize for my first comment in the thread but not for the second.

What people mean is that there's a time for pragmatism and there's a time for social grace.

Sure, me telling OP, "Good luck!" isn't some instructive moment, but does someone with a congenital issue that has stared down this day need that? You think your preparation idea is some wondrous illumination OP hasn't consisted?

I'm not trying to gang up on you, really. Because I think you mean well, truly. But couching things behind emotive gestures, however empirically empty, aren't worth nothing. Not even close.

Good luck, boarder Border.

You'll do fine OP. The surgery part's easy since you'll be asleep. Just gotta take it one step at a time with recovery.

My Dad had a valve replaced a couple years ago and he's doing great now. He was able to walk to the chair in his room the day of the surgery and was walking the halls of his ward the next morning. They really get you up and moving asap. He got sent home on day 6.

Post an update when you're feeling up to it!

My mother had major open heart sugary last November. She has small vessel disease. The first hospital she was admitted to said they would not operate on her since she had no chance of success and that she was gonna die within months. We went got second opinion and luckily found a good surgeon to operate on her. He did an amazing job. She loves running on her treadmill and in her recent checkup the dr was amazed how well her heart has recovered. All the best man you got this. :)
