That would be me throwing the baby out with the bath water.

Cross platform play is such a small and insignificant part of gaming that I'm not prepared to give up Sony best in class exclusive software just because of something so trivial.

Yeah, some people really don't like that they're blocking cross-play with Xbox and Switch. Me? I don't care. If I do take a game online, I've got plenty of people to play with. My gameplay experience is hardly suffering.

No. I can't do without Sony's incredible exclusives.

I will be buying more third party games on other consoles if they keep being arrogant and backwards about stuff like mod support for Bethesda's games though.

I'll never switch. PlayStation will always be my number 1. Thanks to this little guy coming into my life in 1996 when I got my first one.

Me and PlayStation are inseparable.

I fully expect the Switch 2, or whatever Nintendo calls their next hybrid console, to be backwards compatable with the current Switch library.

It'll be important for 3 reasons:
-Neither major HD console maker had bc at launch this generation. If one comes out of the gate with it (spanning 3 console generations at that) and the other doesn't even make an attempt, it'll be a big deal.
- Games like Overwatch, Rocket Leauge, Fortnite, etc needing a new port (and a new purchase in cases like Overwatch) to play on only one of the next gen systems would be a really bad look
-One of the reasons for the switch to x86 seemed to be to make stuff like this possible. Outside of a stronger off the shelf gpu and faster ram, the PS4 and the xb1 are the same in that there's nothing complicated like the cell processor in either system. If Microsoft has bc and Sony doesn't, there's only 2 possible explanations (they couldn't figure it out, or they want customers to buy the same games again). Either way, that would look bad.

I expect the PS5 to be bc with the PS4 though. But again, if it's not, it would be bad for Sony.
This pie chart was proven to be misleading long ago.

Cool thanks for the information.

Here's what Microsoft said of the original article.

"We've carefully reviewed Ars Technica's article, and have completed our own analysis of the actual data using identical parameters. Based on our findings, Ars Technica's analysis and conclusions are grossly inaccurate and misleading due to an incomplete set of data and drawing conclusions about actual usage from data that approximates usage. As an example, we specifically know, based on our complete view of Xbox Live usage data, players are highly engaged with backwards compatible game titles. It's why we continue to support this well-loved feature and the games that use it. We appreciate the work and effort by Ars Technica to share more information about the Xbox community and we are continually looking for ways to do so that also protect the interests of gamers and our partners."

And a follow up by ars technica.

"It's still unclear to us whether or how the "approximations of usage" provided by the API impact the relative usage rankings in our sample. If all apps and games were undercounted by the API's "approximations" at the same rates (or even roughly the same rates), then these relative rankings would still be largely valid over a random sample. That would apply to figures and charts describing various apps or categories (such as Netflix or backward compatibility) as percentages of total sampled playtime".

Dude, this isn't some social injustice like you're framing it to be. Everyone is free to buy a PS4 if they want to, it's their choice to stay in a smaller user base.
Huh? Dude PS4 Fortnite has crossplay with PC and mobile with 80 million PS4's... did you not know that? The PS4 without crossplay is bigger than Xbox and Switch combined by itself, then add pc and mobile.. you don't get bigger than that.

Here's the link to the original thread on Neogaf if you want to read it:
https://www./threads/ars-xbox-one-u...ard-compatible-xbox-360-games.1386408/page-24

Pretty sure it was also refuted on this site at one point (since so many insist on using it like gospel). But it would be much harder to find that thread as it had nothing to do with the thread title.

It is effecting me, and yes I am a PS4/switch owner/Fortnite fan who got burned in this ordeal. It's really turned me cold to my PlayStation since it all went down. Cross play would be nice, but it's more about my account and my progress being locked away from me than any sort of actual cross play. That being said, I did enjoy playing with my cousin and friend on their Xbox while me and my son played on our switches. It may not be a deciding factor for most, but it's certainly a nice feature to have and it shouldn't be understated.

Additionally, I've dabbled with gamepass on my pc, and I really like the idea. I like the backwards compatibility support, and overall I like how Microsoft presents itself. I know this is all cyclical and one company always topples the other back and forth, but right now I feel like Sony has gotten arrogant again and it's very disappointing.

I ordered an Xbox one s on sale for $199 earlier. I've had the One before and didn't like it, mainly the OS more so than anything else. But it's cheap enough now that I'm willing to throw some support their way and see where I am on it. My games were all digital so I have a nice collection, and thanks to game pass there's a low barrier of entry to get kicked off on.

If I had to decide right this second between a PS5 or a next Xbox only, my gut would go with the next Xbox. I'm a consumer, all I can do is vote with my wallet. I don't hate Sony at all, I've owned everything they've put out and have had some very memorable gaming experiences. But just right now, this moment. I'm really frustrated and disappointed with them and the direction I feel their ecosystem is going.

Unsure. The last two gens I've been a multi-console owner by owning all three consoles. At the moment I'm unsure if I'll purchase a next-gen Playstation console and just continue with the Nintendo and Xbox combo. Sony's exclusives do less and less for me. I enjoyed them during previous gens but this gen it doesn't seem to click. That bundled with the policies Sony seems to have make me unsure about a future Playstation purchase during the next generation.

Sony are broadcasting a pretty clear message that they don't want people to play multiplatform online games on their platform. I primarily play single player games, so the multiplayer side of things doesn't really bother me, but if single player games start doing shared progress across PC/Xbox/Nintendo, I'm far less likely to buy a new Playstation.

I have zero hour recorded for online play, therefore it's not my concern.
I will suggest migrating en masse to PC because I heard online play is free.

Just like it was for the PS4?
Neither the PS4 or XB1 had backwards compatability at launch. Since then, I can now play og Xbox games, 360 games, and current gen games on my S. If Sony doesn't even make an attempt on this front next gen, it would be bad. There's nothing in the PS4 architecture that would make bc impossible. If the next Xbox has bc with the xb1, and remains competitive price/power wise with the ps5, there's absolutely no excuse for Sony. I honestly don't even know how they would justify it.

You're definitely over exaggerating on how much people would care. The general public didn't think "Oh, it's okay the PS4 isn't BC because it's too difficult to do due to cell"

A lot of people buy a new console to play new games, believe it or not.

Sony's cross-play policy sucks, but I don't play any online games, so it doesn't really affect me.

Also, it will take a lot more than a shitty cross-play policy to top Microsoft's years of attacks on free software and open standards that have done lasting damage to this day and still for years to come. That still makes Sony the lesser of two evils in my eyes.

It is not just the lack of cross play or cross progression. It is the whole anti consumer stance that will turn me back to Xbox. Seriously no refunds on digit games, family accounts or name changes is terrible in 2018.

At the moment it is just fortnite but imagine if it is FIFA, COD or Battlefield next. More games are going to this model and Sony risk being left out.

Wow. Read every post and it's pretty unanimous most dont care about cross play. Although to the people that honestly want it, I hope you get it.

Looking at my game library and its 2/3 Sony Exclusives. KZ, Infamous, and up to HZD, GOW. I never planned it out like that, I just buy what I'm interested in.

Looks like I'm interested in the exclusive games from their studios.

Not a chance in hell.

I play on PC Switch and ps4. Xbox is obsolete since I have a PC. So I need a "next gen" console for the exclusives stuff and sony 2nd/1st party.

Hopefully they loosen it up but I don't really care.

People would see that Sony is trying to get them to buy another copy of Overwatch, or wait for whatever GaaS title they play on PS4 to get a port before they can play that game on their new system. To make it even worse, if Microsoft has bc, it would be obvious that the ps5 doesn't have it because Sony wants to gouge more money on remasters. It would upset quite a few people, and Microsoft could use it in their marketing quite effectively.

No. I've gone the whole generation w/out major problems with sony. I don't plan on getting the same game for multiple consoles now or in the future - so I doubt this will ever be an issue for me going forward. And people seemed to be okay w/ no cross-platform play for the last what decade - that it became a major issue in 2018 because of one game is interesting.

It's great that you have BC on the X1 but that hasn't helped the MS much when it comes to their position in the market. People have never been afraid of letting go of their physical library so there is no reason to think that they wouldn't let go of their digital one. It will be cool to have it but it will not determine what console people prefer.

A lot of ps exclusives appeal to me, so cross play or no, it doesn't really matter.

Most of my friends are on the PS4 anyway. Cross play would be nice though... Sometimes I'd like to take advantage of sales on other platforms.

No. I don't play multiplayer at all so crossplay means nothing to me. It's all about Sony's exclusives.

Right. Once the mass population see those next gen visuals and games, playing an old last gen game will be the last thing on their mind.

Sure, a small few will lament its absence if it's not supported, the overall majority won't care.

Like all of the other Sony and Nintendo consoles I own, I only have it for the exclusives/console-only games, so no.

Staying on Playstation. All of these things don't affect me at all.

Although backwards compatibility would be nice.

You completely ignored my first point. MS implemented bc when most people had already decided to buy a PS4 and momentum was already on Sony's side. This time around, we'd know where both companies stand before the systems release.

No, I'm good. They would have to mess up pretty bad like the PS3 launch for me not to go with them. During that time, I went with 360. Then Xbox screwed up and lost me as a customer.

I'll change for multiplatform games, but I'll still buy their consoles and exclusives
This. There are multiplats that I still prefer to purchase on PlayStation, even when I've had Xbox consoles that would have given me better performances (early last gen on X360, and XB1X). I'll probably move more of those multiplats over if Sony keeps insisting to behave like this.

Nope. Honestly don't care about crossplay. It sounds nice but not something I care about and not a factor in selecting my console of choice.

Nobody outside a small group of people would care. "Buy this new console so you can play your old games!" isn't a great selling point. People buy a new console to play new games. Backwards compatibility is a thing that's nice when it's there, but it's not going to stop the vast majority of people from buying if it's not. Maybe I'm forgetting that one console that bombed because it didn't have backwards compatibility like people were demanding.

You care enough to not buy a console over it, that's nice, but you're in the minority.

Phil Spencer wasn't in charge then. See his giant bomb interview.

They aren't holier than thou about it. Spencer isn't ragging on Sony. Sony have brought this on themselves with their fortnite account locking issue.

The trouble is that MS and Nintendo are showing Sony up and Sony are not reacting well.

It's been like that for a number of years over a number of issues, like EA access for example but it's only now that Sony's behaviour is coming under the microscope.

He was ragging on them, when he claimed there's an exclusivity deal with FFXIV, and Square Enix representative revealed that it was not released on XBO due to the policies on Microsoft's part.

http://www.ign.com/articles/2015/09/19/xbox-head-discusses-why-final-fantasy-14-is-not-on-xbox-one
Spencer said:
"It's business," he said, adding he couldn't speak too candidly about the matter. "As I've grow in this role, and I've tried to learn the third-party exclusivity thing - and you see us doing less of it now - [I've found] it's not something I'm a huge fan of."

Spencer cites that he likes to bring different aspects of a game to the Xbox One instead of deal with third-party exclusive titles, citing the Fallout 4 mods coming to the platform and how Microsoft worked with EA to get EA Access. He notes a different situation with Rise of the Tomb Raider, however, since Microsoft is playing an active role in its development and publishing.

But in the case of third parties, Spencer claims business deals change things and create platform-specific exclusives.

"Different kind of deals happen, and I know that's part of this busienss, and maybe it'll be my failing in the end," he says, laughing. "But it's not something I specifically embrace with any deal that's out there, whether it's something else. It's just not something I can explicitly talk to."

And here's Square Enix's take on it from before.

http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/07/09/why-final-fantasy-xiv-isnt-coming-to-xbox-360-or-xbox-one
Yoshida said:
In an interview with RPGsite, Naoki Yoshida explained that while PS3, PS4 and PC players will be able to play with each other when the game launches on August 27, the fact Xbox users would require their own server turned the team off the idea.

"The policy has not changed on Microsoft's side," he revealed. "The main reason from our side is that I don't want the community to be divided; to be split into two or more. For example, one player might be on the PC version, another might be on the PS4 version, and I'm playing the Xbox version - but we're not able to join the same game servers. That is just... I just don't like the idea. I disagree with it."

That's not some age-old history, but something that occurred this gen, when he was already in charge.
