I have a problem. My recent recorded clips has no sound at all. What's up with that?

Is there a way to record more than 2 minutes? I have an external plugged in but I don;t see any way to save my clips to it.

My XB1X Scorpio seemed to have been getting noisier of later. The fan was running faster even on games it was previously quieter on. But it's hard to remember these things exactly. But I was convinced it wasn't behaving as it should. Now there are games that have always had a loud fan - sitting in a space station in Elite Dangerous at 4K or Doom in 4K always made the fans louder. But it seemed everything, was running the fan more, for example I could hear it working during Forza whereas in the past I couldn't.

Anyway, finally got around to finishing the COD WWII campaign the other day and the Xbox sounded like a vacuum cleaner playing that. So today I put on my brave trousers and ventured inside the Xbox. And this is what I found.

Not very good eh?

So I cleaned up the mess. Put some new thermal paste on, put it all back together and fired it up.

The result? I can barely hear the console playing either Elite Dangerous or Doom at 4K, whereas before it sounded like a vacuum cleaner.

I'm still nervous about my abilities. So I'm still expecting the thing to explode or stop working. But so far so good. Seemed to have improved the cooling a lot.

Good job, I did this to my PS4 Pro I purchased last week with new thermal pads and liquid metal and the difference is massive.
I'm going to do the same with my Xbox One X too, how hard was it to open? Anything you can help me with that I should be wary of?

It wasn't too tricky. I checked out an iFixit teardown first. There is a really delicate ribbon cable very early in the dismantle process - best to use some plastic tweezers for that.

I'm going to replace the thermal paste and pads on my X next week and I'd love to replace the fan with a nice Noctua pwm but I don't know if it can be done.
Has anyone else replaced the fan?

So i just applied some Arctic Silver 5 to the APU on my Xbox One X, the paste that was on there was already flaky and dry so im not sure what type of paste they are using but must be cheap stuff what ever it is.

This is what the thing looked like when i took it apart.....

cE4MOFg.jpg

all cleaned up....

and then with the thermal past applied...

Havent properly tried it out yet just leaving the Xbox idling on the dash so the thermal paste can settle thoroughly at the moment

Looks like you had a lot more of of the original paste than I did.

Yeah would appear so, but the paste was all dried out and the majority of it just flaked off.

I tried the go to game to test the fan, State of Decay 2 on the community tab screen (where it shows your members) the fan still spins up but isnt as loud as it was......apparently that screen is a bug though so who knows if you'd ever get a silent fan on that screen.

TBH the biggest probably with mine could be that the stacking system i have the xbox x console in doesn't have an open back, theres a good 3 inches of space around the sides and back of the console however and i did drill holes in all the shelf's but didnt seem to help to much. I mean when you put your hand around the back on the xbox when it been on for 30 minutes the temp of the hot air coming out of the thing is quite staggering so its no wonder the fan does get loud.

The system I have my XB1X and PS4Pro in has fairly narrow shelves and not much space at the back for exhaust. Once I'd done the paste on my XB1X I was very happy with how quiet it is - I almost got scared the fan wasn't working anymore. But it did make me aware of how warm the AV unit gets. With the XB1X in standby it didn't seem to lose much heat on its shelf, the wood itself tends to hold heat, and it's been pretty hot in our part of the UK the last week or so.

So today I bought a third party stand for my TV. That allowed me the space to put my consoles on top of the furniture. And I'm pleased to say that the XB1X loses heat in standby much quicker, just settling to a slight warmth, where previously it struggled on that small shelf you see on the left. The XB1X processor really is a beast that needs some good cooling. Like you I'm surprised how hot the exhaust is.

What games were you getting the most fan noise and do you have a 4K TV?

I myself dont have a 4K set yet but am starting to wonder if its these 'X enhanced' games thats causing the issues when using a 1080p TV and the super sampling mode the xbox does, i wondering if super sampling is putting more stress on the xbox than just display a native 4K picture!?.

I have just started play Mad Max which isnt a 'X enhanced' game and i cannot hear the fan at all even when im a foot away!

Yes I have a 4K TV. The games I was getting the most fan noise on - even before my console recently got noisier were:

Elite Dangerous - in 4K mode being in a station is when the fan ramps up. Even with friends with normally silent consoles some have found the fan loud here.
Doom
CoD WWII - on the campaign mission choice menu/map the fans would go crazy
Gears of War 4

If you've seen the pictures a page or so back my XB1X clearly didn't have enough thermal paste on. It was fairly quiet when new. But in recent weeks the fan was working harder and harder. At first I put it down to the warm weather, but eventually it became clear that it was really struggling to keep cool with fan getting very loud. Thankfully it hadn't got as far as shutting down due to overheating.

Hmmm this along with the State of Decay 2 community screen (and probably other games that have similar issues) makes me think theres a bug in the systems fan controller or something as why would the fan have to work so hard on simple screens where hardly anything is happening to stress the system!?

Odd, I had looked at those pics and thought it was pretty good. You don't need much thermal paste since it's only there to fill any tiny gaps and such. It looks like the surfaces were mated pretty well, so the excess had been pushed aside.

Well the difference with new paste is massive. Instead or a roaring vacuum cleaner in Elite Dangerous I can hardly hear the console. What made me think there was a problem wasnt so much the fan volume, but that it had changed so much recently.

Regarding some games such as the COD menu and the Far Cry 5 map. Some games have screens with uncapped framerates and so the console goes crazy .

What about Doom? There's no way I'm opening up my Xbox One X while it's still under warranty and the fan is nearly inaudible to me when there's sound playing, but Doom was a game I could hear the fan ramp up exponentially.

My One X is reporting that over a 25 day period, I have a bandwidth usage of 633TB lol. That's just over 1TB per hour on my 120Mb/s connection lol. Yeah, that just isn't possible. With my connection maxed for an entire hour, I'd get 54GB.

Its not the way its been applied its the fact that its dried out already, you wouldnt expect thermal paste to dry out like that for at least a good 7 years or so

This is a known persistent bug for all Xbox Ones. Just ignore it.

2nd elite controller, 2nd time the grips have started to fall off. Definitely bummed that MS didn't accounce a revision at E3, but at least i got the Best Buy warranty this time around so i can replace it when they completely fall off.

Well guys, today I was seriously considering getting one, almost pulled the rigger despite not really having the money to spare, but unfortunately the deal that Walmart Canada was doing was online only and the store I went to wouldn't offer it themselves. The deal was that if you got an Xbox One X you'd also get Far Cry 5 and Assassin's Creed Origins with it. Oh well, I guess I'll wait until later this year for Black Friday or Boxing Day.

That is a good deal, those are two of the best looking X enhanced games.

With Microsoft's announcement of a possible 2020 release of a new console. How long do you think the XBOX One X will keep getting support? Almost bit the bullet and got one this weekend but I'm being reserved.

I'm confident they'll keep support it until the next version of hardware. I can see them drop the OG One shortly after the launch of the Xbox "next", then use the X as the entry level of Xbox, "next" beeing the premium hardware until a new launch of premium product, etc..

I honestly think moving forward, every console up to a certain point will be supported, i.e. iphone model. I don't see them dropping compatibility for consoles for a while. I think the 1X will still be viable for a fair amount of time.

Witcher 3 is the only game so far that actually looks too bright in HDR, usually I have the opposite issue. Things just look too washed out. Wish devs would include an HDR brightness setting.

Is there any chance that an X model can have defective HDR? Because I played Uncharted: Lost Legacy with HDR enabled and thought it was gorgeous, and I really haven't had that experience with any of the games I've tried on Xbox

The HDR in W3 isn't very well implemented.
