The fact they're showing off stuff that is so vague every time that it leaves more questions coupled with the fact it's astronomically expensive to show it like they did. Is definitely pretentious. But that's on Sony just as much as Kojima and Studio.

Is the game itself pretentious? No way to know. It's smoke as of now.
Yeah. that's an important distinction. The marketing and presentation of this game has been pretentious. Who knows what the game ends up being.

Love to not know anything of how a game is supposed to play literally a year after it's announced but hey here's some b-tier actor you clearly don't give a fuck about mucking around in our fancy in-house engine with these empty ass visual motifs that will probably mean absolutely nothing by the time the game actually goes gold $59.99 you fucking dumbass

I'm tired of this game. I'm tired of the forced intrigue bullshit the developer is trying to push, these empty, meaningless visuals that I couldn't give a shit about

It's as if Kojima read the Wikipedia page of the STALKER film and just aped a bunch of nonsensical slog behind it's backdrop that the could also convinently pass off as 'quirky, Japanese bullshit' that his audience loves to eat up

Why can't Kojima just make a game that's as good as MGS3 again man

Ugh, I don't think there's a criticism more empty than "pretentious".

I am extremely happy that a game of this scale gets to exist on its own terms and be strictly true to itself, with disregard for the audience. I wish all games were like that.

For 4 trailers, it seems like Kojima has basically done nothing but introduce celebrities, repeat scenes over and over and showcase beautiful graphics. I don't get it. It just seems pretentious. Are you making a videogame or a movie?

I hope the game turns out well, but I am honestly getting annoying with how it is being presented. The game was revealed 2 years ago, and we still don't know much. It doesn't help that it probably won't come out till 2019 at the earliest.

There is no question here at all of what they're making.

The gameplay scenes showed us the scale of levels we can expect, the genre, the inclusion of stealth play, a focus on traversal, and maybe a hint of survival play elements. I've said this elsewhere; Phantom Pain released just three years ago and in between they established a team, founded an office, chose and are continuing to learn a new engine and began marketing and development immediately. The pace of this game's development is actually fast given all of that and we already have a better idea of how this game is going to actually play than some other long announced games (FF7 remake, Cyberpunk).

We're all eager for even more information. Insinuating that it's a non-game is just condescending.

I'd recommend you watch all of the trailer breakdowns and realize all of the fuckery that's already being discussed.
From Kojima's interviews, this is shaping up to be his swansong, he's put so much love in it I believe he'll retire after releasing DS.

Hear me out

I was very excited when Kojima revealed his next project back in 2016. It seemed like something new and different was going to be developed. Since then we have had 4 total teasers/trailers, and I am getting to the point where I am almost fed up with the whole thing.

I kind of see where you're coming from, OP. The trailers/gameplay we've seen so far hasn't given real impression of the game yet besides some tone, and that's a little strange considering we're 4 in.

Dunno if I'd call it pretentious necessarily, but I wouldn't be surprised if I felt that wa after playing it. I kind of just imagine kojima is now trying to make his dream game, and whether that works out or not still needs to be seen.

Should be a trippy time regardless.

C'mon. Did we see the same trailers? They are pretentious. That's fine. This is Kojima unhinged without corporation masters editing his vision.

But this isn't traditional video game marketing and may confuse and cause some head scratching. Even the GB guys thought it was nuts lol.

This game is very story focused. And, if teasing and not giving away all about the story is pretentious, then half of hollywood trailers have been "pretentious".

Kojima is the closest thing gaming has to an auter avant garde filmmaker.

You keep just saying it's pretentious, but what is it about this the trailers that makes it that way to you?

isn't this the same guy whose last game had every single mission open & close with a credit sequence? his friggin' middle name's 'pretentious' :) ...

now, does he continue to out-pretentious even himself with all the death stranding stuff? hell, yes. to the point it's laughable, verging on pathetic, unfortunately...

It's looking that way, and I'm also pretty tired of they mystery bullshit marketing strategy they got going on. Fed up, even.

I wouldn't call them pretentious, but I do think they are not really effective. It feels like the hype around this game has deflated quite a lot since its reveal. That said, I dont think it matters since gamers are very forgiving and fickle and it just needs one good trailer to get the buzz going again.

I dont understand this at all. How is what I said not true? He's famous for melding odd concepts and really off the wall presentation with off beat humor, great mechanics, and memorable execution that is wholly unique to his vision. And he frequently lacks subtlety but is adored just the same. There are a lot of famous developers but only one Kojima.

For the record I don't even like most of his games. MGS3 is the only masterpiece in that series as far as I'm concerned, but I cant sent he's one of kind.

Your post seems disproportionate to my comment.

Four trailers in I was expecting something meaty. Obviously I'm disappointed but it's a Kojima game. He loves doing this.

I have a feeling "pretentious" will become another overused criticism by next-gen.

Especially as visuals become more realistic, and certain developers attempt to craft more dramatic or mature narratives for their games.

That remains to be seen.

To call it pretentious requires the context of the actual game, not just its trailers.

If that's what you really believe avant garde is, and believe that Kojima is the closest thing the industry has to avant garde filmmaking then I find that incredibly baffling, that's it

If you're that upset by it, maybe you should focus on something else. Breathe, man. Jesus.

This sounds like less a problem with Kojima and more a completely self-inflicted issue. Don't watch?
Well it's good to watch if you want to have a real opinion on the matter. That said the last trailer is a much bigger reveal than it gets credit for even if the overall game is still shrouded.

Yep. A lot of posts in here come off as nothing more than 'pump the brakes, this isn't the video game tone and self-seriousness I'm used to'.

Guys are willing to give Kojima a long rope, here's hoping he doesn't hang himself with it. Only Kojima could show something four times that makes no sense and not even reveal the genre and still have people say "wait till it's out".

For me this game will show if Kojima was dropping the ball a Konami or if Konami just treated him unfairly. I'm not condoning Konami 's actions I'm. Just saying they may have had a reason.

This is silly. He's made 5 of better games ever made, all immensely critically recieved. Even a single dud wouldn't destroy his reputation, especially as he's landing on his feet.

Add to that, it does vaguely make sense, you just have to pay attention and use some analysis and thought. Basically, things aren't blatantly spelled out for anyone, but the bread crumbs and fundamentals are there, which in a day and age where every single video game spoon feeds and hand holds us through everything narrative and trailer wise, isn't necessarily a bad thing. Though I can fully appreciate if it's not everyone's cup of tea. I don't think it's supposed to be.

In AAA game development? I sure do. I don't see how he doesn't fit an approximation to that label. I also amended my post to,elaborate that I dont adore him or anything, but he stands out. I may play this game, may not. So far I don't really find much apoealing about it.

Now there are a ton of indie devleopers who probably fit that label just as well, but they're not household names amongst the gaming community yet.

I mean we've only seen trailers. At least wait till the games out.

Honestly though the game was announced way too soon. I'm cautiously optimistic but I didn't like the last two Metal Gears so who knows.

Pretentious? Yes. Expensive? Oh, yes.

I mean, why Lindsay Wagner? Because Kojima can. Whoever is footing the bill has to be nervous by now.
