Yes!

It hurts my palms after long play sessions. Dual shock 4 has its issues but it's a clear upgrade over its predecessor whereas I feel like the regressed from 360 controller

I feel like the Switch Pro controller nails the design I wanted from xbox One controller

The Xbox One controller could have been so much better. The sticks are too loose, the buttons are too flat (don't stick out enough), bumpers are too resistant, the dpad is too loud and too hard to push, the triggers are too easy to push in...

The 360 controller feels quite a bit better in comparison.

You want to use the controller wrong, you have no one to blame but yourself. Its the best current controller by far.

Counterpoint: You're simply holding your controllers counter to how ALL of them are designed. Even the playstation controllers are designed around you hitting the R1/L1 buttons with the inner part of your finger, not the tip. Same for the 360, that's why they're called bumpers to begin with: you BUMP them.

This

Also to OP check this old vid but shows the "correct" way to hold the controller.

I disagree wholeheartedly.

The Xbox One controller is wider than the Xbox 360 one and feels more comfortable to use for extended periods of time. This controller and the Switch Pro controller are my two favourites, ever.

The DualShock design has never felt good to me and I really hate how those feel for extended play sessions.

I think your thread title does your topic a disservice OP.

Very poor conjures up images of complete brokenness of a product.

I guess I should have explicitly stated as such. It's very much implied from the image as the tip of my thumb is on the analog stick and that's where the problem starts. When you combine that with the fact that I use my finger tips on the triggers, it makes for a very uncomfortable experience.
Everyone uses the tips of their thumbs on the analog stick. The only issue is that you have the controller literally held way out from your hand instead of resting in your palm. This is just as uncomfortable with a playstation controller btw.

What is with the hyperbolic titles today?

It's one of the best controllers ever made. The bumpers are a little wonky, so it's not perfect, but "very poor" it is not.

I hated the bumpers and the loose feeling sticks from day one. Really makes me not want to use the system.

Maybe a little tongue-in-cheek, but in all seriousness OP, looking at your picture, this is accurately what you're doing 'wrong' (I use wrong in quotes, it's a controller use it how you want, but if you want it to be more comfortable this is how you fix that). And yes, I know it's a PS2 controller, it's what is hooked up under the TV atm ;) DS4 feels more comfortable in general but the basic shape isn't that different.

I find it more comfortable. To each their own, as with all subjective preferences.
Whether the controller is comfortable is subjective; whether the analog stick is in the correct position is objective and based on the type of game you're playing. The Xbox controller layout makes more sense for the majority of modern games, while the DualShock layout makes more sense for games that benefit from the precision of the d-pad. The Wii U Pro Controller makes the most sense for first-person shooters, though. I use different controllers for different games on each platform.

This is definitely not the case. I've also always found the bumper complaints weird because my fingers barely move from their trigger position to use them. DS4 you have to completely change finger position.

Wait it's not common knowledge that MS redesigned the bumpers since launch.

Don't quote your pictures, the forum resizes them properly. Now the picture is either way too small, or waaaaaay too big when you click on it.

This should be a sticky or some shit.

The redesign didn't even matter if you were using them the 'intended' way, which is why they shipped that way to begin wtih. No reason not to fix them, of course, but the OG bumpers work perfectly if you're bumping them like designed.

Hey, we're talking about years and years of the old land. It'll take time.

OP, I completely disagree. When I got my X - which was the first time I owned a XBO this generation - it was such a joy to use the XBO controller compared to DS4. It made me realise how much I'd been missing the 360 controller without realising. I've got large hands and the XBO controller just feels so good, I can play for extended periods without any fatigue. I love the triggers too.
It's the only controller where I have to fight with the bumpers just to press them
OG Xbox One controller I assume? They fixed the bumpers when they revised the controller to add the headphone jack around S launch. My friend has the OG controller and you can't click in the bumpers from the sides which is what I'm assuming your issue is.

Yeah you can keep repeating the word objective all day, but until the controller scientists turn up evidence of the one true controller layout in the large hadron collider, you're still just mistaking your preference for fact.

There's no universally "perfect" controller layout. That seems to be what you have trouble grasping.

I prefer the DS4's shape, and how it nicely centers your pointer fingers between the trigger and bumper, rather than way on the trigger.

People saying symmetrical analog sticks are objectively wrong are objectively wrong. It's all up to preference yo.

Holy shit, people have been holding the controller like not knowing you just have to roll your finger for the bumper to press? Man I feel bad for y'all.

The Xbox One controller is amazing. Great layout and great build.

It's def not really my favourite. It feels weirdly light and hollow to me, but the ergonomics of it are ok.

I prefer the 360.

The switch pro is my go to nowadays, but I wish the d-pad on that was tighter.

I honestly can't agree with anything you've mentioned.

It's my favorite and most comfortable controller this gen with the Switch Pro being my second favorite.

Barring the gamecube controller, the xbox one controller may actually be my all time favorite so far. It's got to be the ones with the grippy texture on the underside though.

No, that seems to be what you have trouble grasping. An "objectively correct" stick layout necessitates the existence of some kind of universal reference against which we can make quantitative comparisons. That's what the word objective means. Independent of any point-of-view. Universal.

There obviously is no such thing with a game controller — it's all just arbitrary arrangements to try to suit various preferences and tastes of various markets, many of whom may disagree based on things like average hand size.

To assert that there is One True Objectively Correct stick placement is just silly immature "my preference must be fact" posturing.

I like the controller. Especially the newer ones with the grip on the back. If it were the launch model ones, i would have agreed on the bumper buttons.

I disagree. I really like them and have no problems with them.

You're not holding it properly, or how controllers are really designed to be held. I feel for you, but it's not their fault.

I don't own an XBone, but the first time I played it I was seriously let down by how cheap the controller felt. I had been hearing about how awesome it was for so long. The rumble triggers are rad, but everything else about it felt so flimsy, as if it would break.

Preference or not it was a literal after-thought. A better control method for 3-D games came along and they looked at their controller designed around 2-D gaming and said, "Ah, fuck it...slap them on the bottom". It does seem like the Xbox controller was designed around 3-D games where the DS was not. For what it's worth I got used to it and actually think they did a really good job on the PS4. It's really comfortable.

The DS4 has better feedback on shoulder buttons and I like the less clicky feel of the face buttons. For pretty much everything else, I think the XB1 is a better controller. The sticks feel better, the D-pad is undoubtedly better, it's more ergonomic, the weight feels better. It's not wasting a ton of its face real estate on a useless touchpad. Also, it has an acceptable battery life.

Switch Pro Controller actually feels like a refinement of both, though the D-pad is a little too big and spongy.

Well, thankfully, I wasn't asserting that there's one objectively correct stick position, because that'd mean that I'm immature, apparently. Seriously, re-read my comments. I'm not saying that Xbox has the perfect controller layout; I'm saying that it has the most sensible layout for modern games. On Xbox One X, I use either a standard Xbox One controller or a Hori Fighting Commander. On Switch, I use the Joy-Con (in a grip) or a Switch Pro Controller. On PC, I use either a Logitech F310 or a PDP Xbox 360 Versus Controller (unless I'm using keyboard and mouse, of course). I use a different controller dependent on the type of game I'm playing, because I realize that no one controller is ideal for all of them.

The argument that the original dual shock had the sticks added on, therefore the designed with them from the beginning Xbox controller is "right" neglects that the N64 also had a stick designed in from the beginning, and it wasn't anything like the Xbox's placement. Why is the Xbox "more right" than the N64?

It isn't, of course. There are an infinite number of ways to design things. People might prefer one more than the other, but that's just preference. Pepperoni isn't the "objectively correct" pizza topping simply because many prefer it.

First time I'm reading these specific complaints about the Xbox One controller.

I've seen serious stuff about connection issues, but nothing negative about ergonomics.

As someone who didn't have a problem with the original one controller, the One S controller has been my favorite so far. Anyone who doesn't like the old ones should really try out the S models.

OP is honestly holding it wrong. This is the same issue with people who hold controllers 'claw style'. You cannot say a controller sucks if you are directly holding it in a way that is not intended.

I recently got an Xbox One controller this year and was honestly blown away. As someone who has played every mainstream console an extensive amount I quite honestly think it is the best one ever made in both form and function. There were some growing pains with the bumpers and the dpad (it requires more pressure than most dpads out there), but it has been a pretty fantastic controller all around for me. I am excited to see where they go with the Xbox controller!

And yeah, I am aware the bumpers had a mild redesign early on this gen. I could understand if OP had issues with those, I suppose.

While I do think that the N64 controller is flawed in that you can't use every button and the stick on it simultaneously with much comfort, I have to say that it's a great controller in the sense that both the d-pad and the analog stick are comfortable to access as long as the game you're playing facilitates using the proper grip method for the controller.
