Okay let me try this again: Fuck Joel. Yay Ellie.

Last of Us Minus Joel can only spell good things for this game because Joel was an albatross around Ellie's neck.

You can't discuss quality and efficiency of character arc if you are judging your characters.

Joel is an asshole but his arc is way more interesting and efficient than Ellie's one. Therefore why playing Ellie is not exciting now, without any arc elements for the.kext game.

Good night

We are on Ellie's arc, although no Joel would be disappointing, as you said his arc was complete by the end of part 1, so if that's where he stops being the player character, I think I'm fine with it.
Also, kinda further pushes the idea that the choice to kill the doctor and save Ellie, was Joel taking control from the player and doing what he wants, regardless of whether it's right or wrong or if the player wanted to. Which I like.

I don't think the guys at Naughty Dog are particularly sterling writers but I'd like to think they're smart enough to avoid a dead lesbian scenario in a game that might as well be preparing its acceptance speech at the GLAAD awards.

I mean, maybe. Counterpoint: the first trailer saw Ellie playing a country song while being very, very angry and promising to "kill them all" Admittedly, those two things don't have to be related.

Yes this was a great decision. You are not in control, he has a will of his own
But it did not come out of nowhere, it was the logical conclusion of his arc.

Another game would have had two endings therefore weakened the character.

At the end, he learned to do anyhing to protect those he loved - it would make perfect sense to have him killed trying to protect Ellie in the inciting event, like another poster guessed earlier in the thread.

That I agree with. It's important that we didn't have a choice in the final act because it was about Joel.

I agree completely, Joel doing anything other than saving Ellie would have went completely against his character.

You are wrong but its ok.

The «legendary» status comes from Joel's decision at the end, completing its character arc.
Character is action, Ellie is passive in the third act.
There is a reason why the last scene is from Ellie's perspective.

Joel did all what he did to get Ellie's "ok" at the end. She knows 100% that he is a liar and murderer but its her decision at the end that makes or breaks Joel.

This is open to interpretation and certainly not a 100%.

The only one taking action at the end is Joel, Ellie woke up and have to endure Joel action.

That she believes him or not you dont know and it does not translate into drama (action) at all.

Joel is what made tlou great. His suffering and struggle

Ellie did nothing cool other than throwing some bricks

i wont like playin' a shemale or something, but what can i do, i'm still buying it. Just think they should start a completely new cast, as the fist game' ending was perfect...

Joel is the absolute best. He did nothing wrong.
Yeah, Joel's a great character. He carries the interesting elements of the narrative and the relationship with Ellie is made meaningful as a result of the kind of personality that he is. It works very well. Ellie isn't an interesting character. She's just a daughter surrogate and that's all she really amounts to. But that's the first game.

The sequel is about Ellie so it's now on Naughty Dog to evolve her character, her personality, and make her interesting as a lead. They have an entire game to do that, and I think they'll manage it fine. They tend to do a pretty good job with their characters. I'm liking the increased brutality as it is, and I'm curious to see how they make it affect her.

Having said that, I'm all for being able to play as Joel again. Since they decided to revisit this story anyway, when I didn't think they needed to, I'd like to see his story closed off in a suitable way.

A shouty old murderer saved a princess from a castle.

Ellie was the emotional core of that game and the only character worth salvaging of that particular tag team, and the focus on Joel robbed her every minute he spent not getting his throat torn out by zombies like he deserved.

Okay let me try this again: Fuck Joel. Yay Ellie.

Last of Us Minus Joel can only spell good things for this game because Joel was an albatross around Ellie's neck.

If it was not for Joel, Ellie would be pushing daisies right now.

Yay Joel!

He was 50ish in the last game, and this is only 5 years later.

And sure, why not. I'd rather play an old man than a cool d00d.

Also fine if the whole game is just Ellie -- But I honestly doubt that'll be the case. Neil lies
My god sorry I cant quote all the people who quoted me lol.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Part2, takes place 9 Years after Part1.

I mean the church seen apparently is 4 years after the main game, so Ellie kiss scene she is like 18 yrs. old.

When the gameplay scene begins, its 5 years after the church scene, so Ellie is about 23 yrs. old.

So Joel being mid 40s in the fist game means he is between 55-60 yrs. old. Frankly I don't think there is an issue with playing an older person in a video game but since this game is trying to be "grounded", I find it hard to believe a close to 60 yr old person would be able to be a one man army like his earlier self.

Shes a complex character, but so is Joel. I really like them both.

I dont mind either way I'm sure it'll still be a masterpiece.

The gameplay is 5 years after the ending of the first game (1 year after the church scene).

Someone should go through all the old interviews and look if he said something similar about Last of Us 1. I'd be really suprised if we don't play some bits as the mystery hammer lady, as I can't really see how that scene is supposed to connect to Ellie

Imagine if Part II has a torture scene with Ellie doing the torturing, would probably make this scene look like child's play.
It's not just how he tortures them, it's how he does it like he's done it a thousand times. It really showed us what Joel probably used to be like as he doesn't hold back on bit

If a scrawny 14 year old girl can be an apex predator, killing dozens and dozens of grown men by herself, a 55-60 year old man can too. I don't see a problem with this. Old man strength and all

I believe Neil said that Joel was the only playable character in the first one. He talks about having to lie to the press in the documentary about the first game. They're both important characters so I'm sure he will be playable. At least I hope so.

I think this is a case where, for better or worse, external factors seep into the planning of the game. Neil likes Troy Baker. Troy Baker is family. He'll be in it. Ergo Joel will be in it. And prooooobably more than just a cameo. Playable section wouldn't surprise me in the least.

Of course we will play as Ellie's mom. And her story will intercalate with Ellie's, Godfather Part II - style.

IIRC there's no way Joel was just mid 40 in the first game. He had a 12 years old daughter at the beginning, so he was AT LEAST 30. And thus, since the game takes place 20 years later, he must be 50 at bare minimum. More realistically, he's around 55 during part I

I don't have any problem with female characters but I like to play with both Joel and Ellie like the first game. This was a poor decision from ND
