Detroit is easily one of the best game year I have played the year.

Choice and consequence matters. Characters are great.

I am keen on reading the review

I've really missed reading Edge since my sub lapsed. I really need to start it up again. Their reviews are fantastic and the issues are always packed with great features. Really wanna read the Jade Raymond feature!

Amazing score for Yoku. I'm gonna pick that up today. The Bombcast is raving about it to.

Also, Detroit deserves a 5. I'm really struggling to finish it, it's got a great start but tanks a few hours in imo. Meh. Heavy Rain still, by far, the best thing that studio has done.

My favourite quote from the review:

"The writer wields allegory with a similar grace and lightness of touch to which Leatherface uses power tools".

Heh, I've watched my wife play Detroit the last few evenings and 5 seems very low.
I will read it and see why they give that but I suspect it's a "this genre can't ever get higher than 5 from us"-score like AJ-s 7.
The game does what it tries to do very nicely even if there is less "real gameplay" than other games except pont-and-click adventures.
It's also ultra polished and I really enjoy the characters.

You can still get away with doing nothing in many action sequences, your choices don't matter all that much until the last quarter or so, sometimes the game forces you to do things you don't really want to do... and so on. Without having read the review, calling it average seems totally fair in my book.
I have not seen a single instance where you can press nothing and the game moves on. You either die or fail the mission. Choices from very early on are acknowledged later on and Kara can die 1 hour into the game which is a massive change to the whole plot and the ballsiest QD has ever been. The game rarely ignores your choice and forces you to do things anyway, a grave sin Beyond and Until Dawn do quite a lot. The final 3 chapters have so many variations videos compiling them all exceed 4 hours.

It's honestly a big step up and gameplay scenes like the chase across rooftops are totally novel for this genre

Loved Fahrenheit, but didn't get on with Heavy Rain and Beyond didn't hold my attention past a handful of hours.

Might be best for me if I wait for *Detroit on PS+ down the line then.
It's their best game by far but maybe you should rent it and see

What happened is Cage keeps refusing to use proper scriptwriters for his games. He's got a great vision for adventure games, but he's a quite mediocre storyteller, especially in interactive media.
Except Detroit wasn't written by him alone. He didn't write a single English line in fact.

Also, Detroit deserves a 5. I'm really struggling to finish it, it's got a great start but tanks a few hours in imo. Meh. Heavy Rain still, by far, the best thing that studio has done.
I agree the middle can drag a bit, but the final act rules again

A few more quotes from the Detroit review for anyone interested:

"Certain key choices carry over to future chapters...to QD's credit, there are plenty of avenues to explore... whether or not you'll want to is another thing"
"Cage wades in with both feet...literal waves of the hand gloss over a major plot contrivance"
"Far be it for us to suggest a developer shouldn't approach certain subject matter...Perhaps on this evidence QD isn't the studio to do it justice"
"There are moments where Detroit really hits its stride....where you're presented with choices, each representing a compromise."
"There are no real red herrings or surprises...The games main plot twist is so heavily telegraphed it's a shock when Cage actually follows through with it"
"For all of it's irritating shortcomings, there are things to admire. Setting is superbly realised. Several individual moments you won;'t soon forget"
"Feels like a series of memorable moments rather than a whole...Looks the part but something is missing"

It's a conspiracy, folks! No reason to read or acknowledge this less-than-positive score, move along!
Did I say that....no. Scores should be brushed aside as it's not a big deal.

That said, after 30 years of gaming, there's no doubt in my mind the reporting surrounding Detroit, QD and Cage by some quarters of the press has been driven by issues beyond the game. With social media we see both professional and personal opinions expressed. To be honest I've been shocked at the vitriol aimed at Cage and his team. It seems to have gone well beyond professional criticism into personal agendas.

But as I say. It's a score in a magazine that will be forgotten next month. The most important thing is the game found it's audience.

I wonder what subject matter and plot contrivance they are referring to cause a lot of the abuse stuff and minor details are explained in the game

Considering they've previously given Heavy Rain and Until Dawn 7, this isn't really an argument that holds any water. EDGE do not hold a grudge against this genre of game.

That's the most important thing for you, a fan of the game who wants it to succeed and doesn't want to legitimise any criticism.

The most important thing for the average gamer who is looking to buy a game is to read a review by a professional outlet whether it's good or bad. It's certainly not 'the game found an audience despite some criticism'.

You're basically coming in to a discussion about a review and shouting 'I don't care about reviews because they're all biased and the game sold a lot of copies anyway'.

Reviews are personal opinions, but there's no doubt in mind a handful of games journalists tried to torpedo Detroit for reasons other than the quality of the game. As such you just shrug your shoulders at such scores and take satisfaction at how Detroit found its audience.

Are you trying to say you don't want politics in your political game?

User Warned : Attempt to discredit outlet.
I don't know why people hold Edge scores in such high esteem, It was always the most pretentious video game magazine on the shelf.

Exactly. Should change their name to Edgelord Magazine. To think I was actually considering subscribing to them at one point.

Interesting trend of trying to discredit a well respected publication because you don't like a review in here.

Almost like Quantic Dream did with Le Monde, AM I RIGHT?!

Unsurprising. Was the Detroit review from the same editor who gave Hellblade a 4 out of curiosity?

Oh that's definitely strange then.
Anyway, I respectfully disagree with their score but I will read the review to see their reasoning :)
Hopefully I'll get the magazine in the mail soon, it usually comes a week later here in Norway.

Their reviews aren't "edgy" at all. At least usually their reviews are well structured and the narrative matches the score. If anything you've come in here shouting about how pretentious the magazine is with nothing to back it up. I subscribe and I can tell you that the words don't come over as edgy or pretentious at all. But the you wouldn't know that because you haven't read it.

Detroit: Become Human - 5

Semblance
would love to read the review, for better or worse.

Detroit fucking sucked. I loved Heavy Rain and Beyond. Don't know what happened.
that is an au contraire opinion from most fans/critics a like, but if detroid sucked for you, i can't even imagine... Beyond was and is the worst game i ever played that i can remember (there were others, of course).

I'd like to petition a mod for a thread title change.

Why Edge threads are always this embarrassing?

They were just called:
- Edgy (several people said this)
- Pretentious
- Clearly biased
- Trying to torpedo Detroit
- Pushing an "agenda" (what agenda? tell me)

This all without reading the damn review.

I'm not even adding to this list the big number of people who are trying to imply they "hate Playstation", but are too afraid of getting banned for saying it - no problem, guys, you don't need to disguise your posts, it's pretty clear. Can't some people just act like adults for once?

I don't even know if I've ever agreed with Edge reviews score and that won't change this time either, 5 for Detroit is ridiculous.

EDGE threads always get good comedy value from insecure fans.

It's pretty clear by now that EDGE has a different outlook on game reviews and they value stuff more than other outlets (like creativity and pulling through with the game's main ideas) and slam games hard for some stuff others might gloss over (like one major game mechanic not working properly or games having serious bugs / performance issues).

I never understand when people say this. The thread is mainly about the scores the games got. There is going to be a discussion on it when it's created, only about the scores presented in the OP.
People are implying they're either corrupt or doing this just for attention, this is a pretty big assumption. How can people judge a review without reading it then?

Edge uses more than just 7-10 and David Cage games aren't "gaming masterpieces beloved by all" at all for this reaction because of a 5. Several people think this game's writing is bad, I don't get what is so controversial about Edge - a magazine that cares more about this kind of stuff, giving it a lower score than average (which they already do for most games).

Honestly, this thread reeks of anti-jounalism/intellectualism.

Yeah this thread is incredibly transparent like you've said here even before ~Fake came in with their childish comment I've seen from them about 10 times now at least. These things are a very poor reflection on the site IMO.

There's something really gratifying about the way Detroit has gone on to be such a big success and garnered a great following. It's also really cool to see actors like Bryan Dechart become a fan favourite and attract a huge social media following.

Reviews are personal opinions, but there's no doubt in mind a handful of games journalists tried to torpedo Detroit for reasons other than the quality of the game. As such you just shrug your shoulders at such scores and take satisfaction at how Detroit found its audience.

Scores are meaningless without the context of the review though and Edge generally does a tremendous job of contextualizing their scores.

I would say that is debatable. They write fairly well, but there reviews are generally fairly brief and don't necessarily go into much more depth than most other reviews in the big sites. In truth, the quotes provided so far simply suggest that they weighted certain critcisms (handling of subject matter, lack of coherence) and didn't give as much credance to others (consequence, visual design, etc.).

Then what's the point of having a thread discussing the scores that are only presented here in the opening post?

Who ever said that David Cage games were masterpieces? And beloved by all? No one here is saying Detroit is a flawless masterpiece of this gaming age. People are saying it is worth more than a five, because it's better than "average". People are aware there is flaws, mostly because nearly every game is flawed to some degree, some more than others. When a thread is only about the score a game receives, people have the right to say they think in their opinion that the game is above that and that doesn't equate it to a "masterpiece" as you said.

Note: I agree slandering Edge is wrong, I'm talking about the posters who just think the score is too low.
