breaking news, numbers are meaningless
I have not seen a single instance where you can press nothing and the game moves on. You either die or fail the mission. Choices from very early on are acknowledged later on and Kara can die 1 hour into the game which is a massive change to the whole plot and the ballsiest QD has ever been. The game rarely ignores your choice and forces you to do things anyway, a grave sin Beyond and Until Dawn do quite a lot. The final 3 chapters have so many variations videos compiling them all exceed 4 hours. You can still get away with doing nothing in many action sequences, your choices don't matter all that much until the last quarter or so, sometimes the game forces you to do things you don't really want to do... and so on. Without having read the review, calling it average seems totally fair in my book.
It's their best game by far but maybe you should rent it and seeLoved Fahrenheit, but didn't get on with Heavy Rain and Beyond didn't hold my attention past a handful of hours.
Might be best for me if I wait for *Detroit on PS+ down the line then.
Except Detroit wasn't written by him alone. He didn't write a single English line in fact. What happened is Cage keeps refusing to use proper scriptwriters for his games. He's got a great vision for adventure games, but he's a quite mediocre storyteller, especially in interactive media.
I agree the middle can drag a bit, but the final act rules againAlso, Detroit deserves a 5. I'm really struggling to finish it, it's got a great start but tanks a few hours in imo. Meh. Heavy Rain still, by far, the best thing that studio has done.
Did I say that....no. Scores should be brushed aside as it's not a big deal. It's a conspiracy, folks! No reason to read or acknowledge this less-than-positive score, move along!
I wonder what subject matter and plot contrivance they are referring to cause a lot of the abuse stuff and minor details are explained in the gameA few more quotes from the Detroit review for anyone interested:
"Certain key choices carry over to future chapters...to QD's credit, there are plenty of avenues to explore... whether or not you'll want to is another thing"
"Cage wades in with both feet...literal waves of the hand gloss over a major plot contrivance"
"Far be it for us to suggest a developer shouldn't approach certain subject matter...Perhaps on this evidence QD isn't the studio to do it justice"
"There are moments where Detroit really hits its stride....where you're presented with choices, each representing a compromise."
"There are no real red herrings or surprises...The games main plot twist is so heavily telegraphed it's a shock when Cage actually follows through with it"
"For all of it's irritating shortcomings, there are things to admire. Setting is superbly realised. Several individual moments you won;'t soon forget"
"Feels like a series of memorable moments rather than a whole...Looks the part but something is missing"
I will read it and see why they give that but I suspect it's a "this genre can't ever get higher than 5 from us"-score like AJ-s 7.
Well, at least they got something right.
But as I say. It's a score in a magazine that will be forgotten next month. The most important thing is the game found it's audience.
Reviews are personal opinions, but there's no doubt in mind a handful of games journalists tried to torpedo Detroit for reasons other than the quality of the game. As such you just shrug your shoulders at such scores and take satisfaction at how Detroit found its audience.
I don't know why people hold Edge scores in such high esteem, It was always the most pretentious video game magazine on the shelf.
Considering they've previously given Heavy Rain and Until Dawn 7, this isn't really an argument that holds any water. EDGE do not hold a grudge against this genre of game.
Exactly. Should change their name to Edgelord Magazine. To think I was actually considering subscribing to them at one point.
would love to read the review, for better or worse.
that is an au contraire opinion from most fans/critics a like, but if detroid sucked for you, i can't even imagine... Beyond was and is the worst game i ever played that i can remember (there were others, of course).Detroit fucking sucked. I loved Heavy Rain and Beyond. Don't know what happened.
God of War review?I'd like to petition a mod for a thread title change.
EDGE Magazine 321 - August 2018 - Oh Boy

What happened is that it is a great game. One of fhe best I've played this gen.Detroit fucking sucked. I loved Heavy Rain and Beyond. Don't know what happened.
It has to be a game firstDetroit isn't a 5/10 game..but that's just my opinion.
I respect their score.

I never understand when people say this. The thread is mainly about the scores the games got. There is going to be a discussion on it when it's created, only about the scores presented in the OP.
EDGE threads always get good comedy value from insecure fans. Why Edge threads are always this embarrassing?
They were just called:
- Edgy (several people said this)
- Pretentious
- Clearly biased
- Trying to torpedo Detroit
- Pushing an "agenda" (what agenda? tell me)
This all without reading the damn review.
I'm not even adding to this list the big number of people who are trying to imply they "hate Playstation", but are too afraid of getting banned for saying it - no problem, guys, you don't need to disguise your posts, it's pretty clear. Can't some people just act like adults for once?
People are implying they're either corrupt or doing this just for attention, this is a pretty big assumption. How can people judge a review without reading it then?I never understand when people say this. The thread is mainly about the scores the games got. There is going to be a discussion on it when it's created, only about the scores presented in the OP.

lmaoThere's something really gratifying about the way Detroit has gone on to be such a big success and garnered a great following. It's also really cool to see actors like Bryan Dechart become a fan favourite and attract a huge social media following.

My favourite quote from the review:
"The writer wields allegory with a similar grace and lightness of touch to which Leatherface uses power tools".
Scores are meaningless without the context of the review though and Edge generally does a tremendous job of contextualizing their scores.
Then what's the point of having a thread discussing the scores that are only presented here in the opening post?
Who ever said that David Cage games were masterpieces? And beloved by all? No one here is saying Detroit is a flawless masterpiece of this gaming age. People are saying it is worth more than a five, because it's better than "average". People are aware there is flaws, mostly because nearly every game is flawed to some degree, some more than others. When a thread is only about the score a game receives, people have the right to say they think in their opinion that the game is above that and that doesn't equate it to a "masterpiece" as you said.Edge uses more than just 7-10 and David Cage games aren't "gaming masterpieces beloved by all" at all for this reaction because of a 5. Several people think this game's writing is bad, I don't get what is so controversial about Edge - a magazine that cares more about this kind of stuff, giving it a lower score than average
