Dark Souls/ Souls games aren't hard imo. It's all about timing. Ninja Gaiden taught me that lol.

Yes if it is as well designed yes, personally I think Dark Souls is challenging and keeps you on your toes but not difficult

Challenging games aren't a new thing, and even then with effectively infinite lives/continues and checkpoints just a few minutes apart, it's hard for modern games to be truly difficult when it's just a matter of perseverance and learning from failure, and you only ever need to beat that section once in a thirty hour playthrough. The games I grew up on felt far harder thirty years ago when you had to start from the beginning each time and couldn't just luck your way past a boss once, they just encouraged me to get better, so I think I'd be ok. I'm happier with a range of difficulties though, I don't always want an intense challenge these days.

Yea, but that'd get kind of tiring after a while. I like playing difficult games often, but not everything needs to be balls hard.

To be honest I don't really think you can call them that difficult considering they're single player games that are made to be beaten.

If you want true difficulty then you need to play PvP against a player that you're not meant to beat. And I only play multiplayer so.. yeah I would keep playing.

As much as I love Dark Souls, I really would not have the patience for all that time to keep dying across every single game if it were that hard.

No, because sometimes I just want to chill. If every game is potentially stressing, then the industry would implode.

No, I don't want all my games to be challenging. I play a variety of games for a variety of reasons.

Also, Souls games are hard/difficult, they only become easy when you get good at them. It'd be like saying playing piano isn't hard, you just have to get good at it, or, sculpting isn't hard, you just have to get good at it.

Dark Souls is not that difficult in some sense (doesn't require fast reaction time), but they require attention and patience.
If all games required that amount of attention and patience, then no, I might not keep playing. Sometimes I just want to stroll through endless amounts of mobs in some A-RPG (Diablo, PoE etc), maybe watching tv at the same time. Sometimes I want to follow a story with as little gameplay as possible (Life is Strange etc).
But Dark Souls is certainly at the very top of my favorite games ever.

Yes, I mean if I had to choose between tough games or no games at all.

And as others have said, Souls games aren't really that hard, they just require the right mindset and approach. Virtually every 8 or 16 bit game you can name is more difficult - and a LOT more unfair. I've finished most the Souls games and still can't be bothered to deal with Pilotwings.

Never played Dark Souls, but given how popular those games are, I doubt they're that hard. And my default for playing games these days is the hard difficulty, so no, my habits wouldn't change.

Yes, because FROM's games arent that difficult, especially compared to what has come in the past.

Miyazaki has said it multiple times. From design their games with challenge in mind, and they give players all the tools to overcome those challenges. Its not about designing something to be difficult for difficulty's sake, its about designing challenges that give players a sense of satisfaction when they overcome them.

The older I got the more appreciative I became towards developers not wanting to hold my hand and actually treating me like I had a brain so I would actually prefer if most games were as difficult as Dark Souls.

Haha kids these days thinking Dark Souls is a hard game, go back to the 90's and play some games. Dark Souls is prpbably the fairest game you can play.

I think it depends on how that difficulty is presented to the player. I very much enjoy the Souls games, difficulty and all. Except for times like now in Bloodborne where I'm stuck grinding for vials so I can have another shot at a boss. That's not fun, and I'm not sure I could handle all games having junk like that. There are also difficult games like Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze where I never really minded dying because of how quickly the game got the player back into the action -- same goes for Bit.Trip.Runner.

Yes, but maybe not as much.

I like difficult games, but there's different kinds of difficult. If they were just like DS, probably would only play a little. If they were like DMC and Ninja Gaiden with fast paced skill based gameplay as opposed to a patience game like DS, I could play all day every day.

What if there's a game that most people find it to be easier than Dark Souls but for me personally, it's harder? It will exist/change or not?

Difficulty doesn't mean the same for different people.

As, yes. Greater, probably not, or at least not with the same frequency. Most games can't justify that level of difficulty.

There are plenty of games that are difficult to master and have been since the beginning. Try playing a shmup for high score, or doing a no-miss run on something. Do challenges and difficulty runs on games and you'll see that dark souls difficulty is just a meme and its not necessarily special. Most people, especially in the video game press, are casuals so they dont really play something to the ground and master it. Overcoming challenges and walls are what VG are all about to the more hardcore. This means really spending a lot of time with games that you really love to see what's possible. This isnt new and From Soft didnt invent this philosophy.

Kind of a moot question. The industry wouldn't exist at all if every game was the exact same.

Only if the game felt as rewarding for it's difficulty, there is always a great feeling about overcoming an obstacle in Dark Souls.

Many games can just have frustrating difficulty that just feels unjust.

As someone who grew up in the Nintendo hard era I could handle it (Bloodborne even holds the mantle of GOAT for me now) and it would take more than that to get me to quit.

That said I prefer a different range of difficulty that fit mode and game type. Plus as I have said before and will say again I don't have an issue with very easy or hard stuff as much as wanting to play on the one they have put the time into balance (intended difficulty) because the one size fits all difficulty slider style never feels as complete or meaningful as games with one difficulty crafted to the experience.

TL;DR- it wouldn't be enough to get me to quit gaming but it's not the direction I want theindustry to take.

OP's question doesn't really make too much sense when applied to games as a medium. Like, what would a puzzle game with DS level difficulty look like? Or a visual novel? How does it apply to multiplayer games?

The majority of games I dedicate my time to are vastly more difficult than Dark Souls.

However, the great thing about gaming is that there is a large variety within nearly every genre so people from all skill levels can play. Even within a single game there can be quite a lot of variety. The climb for easy to very difficult in rhythm games is the most satisfying feeling, but even if you don't make it very high you can still have fun with a ton of songs.

So although I wouldn't personally quit, I'd be disappointed in the lack of variety in regards to difficulty.
