On an episode of Kotaku Splitscreen podcast, Jason Schreier and Kirk Hamilton were discussing Bethesda's press conference. Jason said Bethesda should be called out for making that "Save Player 1" video and then going and making Fallout 76 online multiplayer. He said it was "shitty" of them.

I really don't understand this sentiment. So because Bethesda made that video, they have to make only single player games? Look at all the other games at their conference. Prey, Rage 2, Starfield, Doom, and the new Elder Scrolls. All are single player games that most people are looking forward to. They make a multiplayer game and it's considered a shitty move?

Sorry, I just thought it was a really shit take by Schreier. And I guess it just spoke to me about how gaming culture fosters an idea of never being satisfied or happy with the products being released. I don't think any other industry is greeted with this much scrutiny. It's frustrating because these companies are putting out some amazing games and you have people like Schreier who seem to criticize just for the sake of criticizing. Even Kirk Hamilton seemed shocked by that take and disagreed.

Do you guys agree with Schreier that Bethesda should be called out for Fallout 76?

I wholeheartedly disagree, but it's surprising to hear that. I believe I saw a positive tweet for him about the game in the last few days.

Why should they be called out? They're marketing has seemed pretty clear to me in that Fallout 76 is a multiplayer game that will fill the gap between now and Starfield. It's important to note that the next two Bethesda games will be single-player experiences. Bethesda don't have to make purely single-player experiences.

*Company makes video about their slate of single-player games*

"Oh cool"

*Company makes literally one multiplayer focused game*

"We gotta call em out!"

No we don't, that's ridiculous. They're still a huge singleplayer publisher.

A massive single player RPG like Fallout takes several years to make. Fallout 4 came out less than 3 years ago, an eventual Fallout 5 (which would be on a different generation of consoles on a new engine) wouldn't take less than 5-6 years. I have no issues with the fact they make a multiplayer spin-off in the meantime.

Wasn't that just a marketing campaign for the games they had out at the time? It was accompanied by a sale as well.

I don't see a problem, some people like the idea and will play it, some will ignore it, it's not like it's been confirmed that Fallout 5 (or NV2 ;)) is never going to be released (or that Bethesda is truly moving away from SP games/modes).

They've done a HUGE amount for single player games this generation. The amount of variety they have in the first person genre is staggering.

No need for this.

Personally I'm getting really sick of the gaming community and the constant outrage. Sometimes it's justified like the current Fortnite issue, but other times it's like a bunch of entitled brats that need something to be angry about.

#SavePlayer1 was about saving single player campaigns, which Bethesda are doing. They're releasing more games than Fallout. "Calling them out" doesn't really make much sense. Someone could ask them about it, but not so aggressively as they're making it sound.

wat

making one (1) multiplayer-only game doesn't mean they aren't "saving player one" considering they are still doing singleplayer games, wtf.

That's like saying Nintendo has abandoned family friendly games because they've funded Bayonetta 2 and 3.

Press sneak fuck is wrong. Is Bethesda restricted from creating multiplayer games because of one marketing campaign? Plus the vast majority of their games are still single player....

Yeah that sounds pretty embarrassing to be honest.

Games are allowed to change and not every game needs to be for everyone. "You promised to never do MP" type of stuff doesn't even deserve a response.

If you're a fan of Fallout, I could see annoyance in it being MP, but as a fan a person should also give it a chance.

As you say, OP, they have plenty of other SP focused games. It's definitely not a shitty move on their part. If you don't want MP only Fallout, skip it, it's as easy as that. I'm sure Fallout 5 is in development.

I mean they are still doing Starfield and ES6, both massive single player games. In the NoClip doc its revealed F76 is just the multiplayer mode that was cut from Fallout 4 and they decided to make a new map.

I dont think its an issue at all.

Yeah I saw people talking about it on twitter. They showed 1 online game, 1. We are getting Rage, Wolfenstien, Doom, Starfield, and ES but 1 multiplayer game and people lose their minds and act like a bunch of babies.

Basically.

I hate to bring out the old "gamer entitlement" label, but this is a prime example of it from the community.

Maybe try buying Wolf 2 and Dishonored 2 at launch next time if you want to show single player support and don't complain to a company for expanding their IP in a logical and practical way.

Cherry picking extremely specific out of context examples for some AHA GOTCHA moments is the worst and its actively ruining online discussions.

Outrage woke culture is the worst.

Schreier is being an ass in this.

They've announced Rage 2, the Wolfenstein Youngblood, a new doom, and the prey dlc all of which is singleplayer.

They've also announced star field and elder scrolls VI which will be single player.

They're the studio most committed to pure single player games. He should be calling out other studios.

After the lackluster fallout 4, I'm far more excited for fallout 76 then I would be for a fallout 5 or fallout spin off.

They have made single player games for... almost 30 years? And have two more single player games (TES VI and the space game) coming?

I kinda agree in overall, #saveplayerone
Fallout is online now guys. Wolfe stein has co-op and prey receiving multi-player. I think the approach on wolf valid. A single player com optional co-op. But fallout. But the fallout one felt like a stab on my chest

I haven't listened to the podcast but I'm assuming this is likely because Fallout is a game that was always more recognized by it's quests, NPCs, writing and such. That's a thing that people generally expect from Fallout games, the weird funny satirical hard choice quests, so having a Fallout game without that probably doesn't feel much like a Fallout game. This was already a huge argument with all the purists after Bethesda took ownership of the Fallout rights and a lot of people felt they were less good in this area compared to the old games.

Shitty of them? What a baby this guy is. They've been working on this in some form for many years, and for my own part it's something I've been wanting to see for more than a decade! I've always wanted a Bethesda open world game that can be shared with others in MP.

Am I mistaken or is this guy an adult and a veteran in the field? Why would he say something so immature. They're creative people who make things and they're making something they clearly want to make. That's not shitty.

Maybe if we get enough upvotes on Reddit, they'll remove the multiplayer aspect from 76.

Just because they made a Save Player 1 video, doesn't imply they can ONLY make single player games.

Starfield is touted to be a single player experience, no? The same will likely apply to Elder Scrolls VI and Fallout 5.

This seems to be a case of making a mountain out of a molehill.

Well i'm definitely not buying it because i have zero interest in this whole fotm multiplayer shit. And thinking how we could actually be playing Starfield or TES 6 this year if they didn't waste their ressources on this, yeah i'm not too happy.

I'm not sure a company needs to be "called out" for doing this. It's a creative/business decision. It's not some major controversy like adding shitty pay2win mechanics into the game. If you don't like it, vote with your wallet, and sooner or later the next big SP Bethesda game will be out anyway.

Shitty may be too strong a word but I kinda agree with Jason here.

From the original groundbreaking isometric Fallout to a MMO...….yikes

Talk about ignoring the fanbase.
