yeah, i would like some precisions on this

Interacctions? How that works? You havebto advance with every character step by step and if you advance excesively with one of them you can miss interacctions with other characters?

If this la true, this would be AWESOME

nah, there's simply no interaction at all in the demo... the character joins you, but if you do their story, they're still alone in the cutscenes... that's what i mean by interactions, there's none in the demo, they don't talk to each other and they're not sharing cutscenes...

Once I hit 3 hours the game would still let me save but the timer remained at exactly 3 hours. So it's unclear that any progress after that will transfer. But I could keep playing.
Hmm. Is the demo just the full game with a timer? If so, maybe if you didn't launch another Switch game before release you could just save after launch with like 50 hours. lol

I haven't tried the demo yet. But does anyone know how the taverns work? I read somewhere saying you can play as other character's stories directly from the tavern instead of making a new save but would you start out at level 1 when you do that or would you be over-leveled? Also do all the stories converge at some point into 1 over arching story?

Yea its really weird. They dont interact, they are not apart of their story. Its like its individual characters that just happen to be in the same party just for battle purposes.

It feels like as if you have a main character and the rest of the party are just generic party members for each storyline.

For the most part it's quite open-ended though. Also, the file size is differe than the full game so there's no way to cheese it and play through everything for free. =)

Basically you will find other main characters on the map. You can choose to start their backstory right away with your current party, or just have them join your party at level 1 without going into it. If you do skip their backstory, you can replay it at a tavern. The tavern has a list of story chapters so I think you may be able to replay freely.

I believe the stories intersect. One of my characters was told he should seek out another character. Even though the stories are separate I do think there will also be some grander plot at the end.

Insimoly don't understand how every story works in this game, i've only tried one character...they start in different places and then, at some point they join to the character you're using that moment?

There has to be interacctions with them, It can't be like that, It would be an incredible design failure if other characters are muted while they are with you.

I haven't followed this game at all but.... Old school JRPG art style? Fully priced with up to 80 hours of content? Incredible music?
Count me in, don't know how this wasn't on my radar.

If you come across an enemy that looks like this mascot w/ a purple bag on its back, try to kill it ASAP with everything you got (especially multi hit moves).

It gave me 1,000 exp and now I have a level 16 h'aanit and level 15 theroin

So question, I played the original demo but wasn't too sure about somethings.

Does your character you select only matter at the start? Do you get every character?

The character you select at the start only changes what you do first and where you start out on the world map. You can experience everything else in a single playthrough.

Right now I'm pretty into the game.

I am taking on Therion, the thief to start. Without spoilers, here are some observations:

  • The game takes a lot of cues from SNES JRPGS obviously, but seems most closely in admiration of Final Fantasy VI

  • UI feels very clean, menus are nice, text is very nice.

  • The dialogue has that kind of naive punchiness to it of old SNES jrpgs (where people are kind of spunky and melodramatic)

  • The first thing I did was turn the voice acting all the way down. This made it feel much more like the old JRPG it's trying to be, and I enjoy reading more than listening to voice actors.

  • Exploration is fun, dashing is fun, using your skills opens up a lot of interesting effects.

  • Battle is very satisfying. Once you figure out the break system it's fun developing strategies to kill enemies. There is a tempo to it, a variety of ways to approach and this layers as you get more skills. Finishing battles swiftly, getting untouched bonuses has a kind of Persona 5 flow to it.

  • JP system feels nice and old school, simple but robust.

  • Music is solid- certainly an ode to old JRPGS (seems to have been designed to unfreeze the past and evoke childhood emotions?)
Early takeaway: Definitely and ode to SNES era JRPGs combining the look, feel and sound effectively. Even the narrative has the timbre and tonality of an old JRPG so if you liked FFVI, Chrono Trigger, Star Ocean this might be right up your alley.

What might be concerning: Is the story actually any good? I am enjoying the high stakes opening of the thief's arc, however I want to know more about how the pieces fit together. A big JRPG like this needs a compelling and intriguing narrative alongside a good cast of characters- the question is, does it deliver?

Well, as excited as I was for this demo, I'm not going to play it. It sounds very limited and because the save data carries, I don't want to miss out on things. I'll wait for the full game.

Unfortunately, I'm out. And for the same problem I had with the demo. The flashing lights in battle when you do just about anything, especially breaking/hitting a weakness. The contrast is just too much for my eyes unless I put it at the lowest brightness settings. I tried that and got stuck in a dungeon for like ten minutes because I couldn't see where to go because it was so dark. Had to turn up the brightness just to see where to go.

So I stopped playing. I got a minor headache now and I won't be getting the full game. I made sure to write about this in the post-demo survey, but they definitely did NOT put enough brightness/lighting options in the game. They did the very barest minimum: a brightness meter and turning the vignettes on/off. That's it. Would it have killed them to have an option to tone down the flashing lights and other bright lights like torches, etc? Fuck.

Kinda with you there. I loved how it looked at the original reveal but even after playing for about an hour, I don't know if I can stand looking at this highly contrasted blurry game for 50-80 hours.

Also, at least for Cyrus, the story doesn't make a very great impression.

I played Tressa. It was fine. Nothing amazing, nothing terrible either. Would have continued playing it if it weren't for the lighting issues.

One other (minor) quibble: All of the enemies I ran into were FUUUUUUUUUUUGLY. Poor designs and the sprites look like shit.

A preview from GameInformer does mention some party interaction:
https://www.gameinformer.com/feature/octopath-traveler/a-tale-of-intertwined-destinies

The notion that these stories are more personal is exemplified in travel banter scenes. I see one right after a story beat in which a grateful character gives Alfyn a gift, sparking one of Tressa's memories. While the development team has asked me not to share too many details, the two characters share a brief moment reflecting on the event, with Tressa sharing a story from her past and detailing why it was such a pivotal moment in her backstory. I gain additional insight into her character, adding an extra layer of humanity to the relationship

I suspect there are more of these later on and not many (or any) of these early in the game because the chance of having any two characters together is rather small so the developers didn't bother.

Right. From the recommended levels for characters' Chapter 2 (mid-20s), the player will effectively have to recruit all eight travelers before progressing with the story, at which time the developers can safely create interactions without accounting for open-ended recruitment order.

Two small issues I had with this demo (I don't remember them being in the original demo): first, whenever a menu/dialogue selection comes up, there's no cursor present for selection until you nudge a direction; second, the flee rate is abysmally low—at least for the first attempt—because almost every single first flee attempt failed for me... which stuns the rest of your characters, rather than letting them also attempt to flee with their turn. Just mild inconveniences.

Also, I thought the characters' intro scenarios were made considerably easier than the original demo (I tried Alfyn's and Therion's)... until I got to my third character, H'aanit; her boss was scaled to be decently challenging.

Did Ophilia then had her meet H'annit. I'm very impressed with the game's possibilities. Demo is clocking at 2:20, I was thinking to go to Therion but I'll stop playing.

Completely sold.

For those about to redownload the demo to try everyone be careful. You'll ruin your experience very badly.

Little question since I didn't even did it with the first demo. Do you have to delete your first try with one of the characters to start with another? Because I started with Primrose and I think I finished it.

So it scales up the starting quests for each party member you've received. The 8th character's quest is probably around Level 20, which then leads into the Chapter 2 quests of the mid-twenties?

It is more of a specialization / multi-classing decision. The costs go up a huge amount, and you get increasing bonuses for getting more and more of a single skill's classes.

Are there classes outside the main 8?

Also regarding the 3 hour thing...so long as i dont die and my switch stays on i can play the demo indefinitely?

I chose alfyn, if I choose another character later is that a another save file? Can I play different stories at different times? Not exactly sure if his path action is that useful

Also, what does that number on a monster mean, diamond shape? Every time I hit it breaks, it is just hitting with the right weapon? Will it break every time? What happens if the number is higher?

So I haven't fallen in love with a Square Soft game in probably a solid decade. I toy with some of them. I played FF15 for about 15 hours before quitting. I played about the same amount of the first Bravely Default, I finished FFXIII somehow but none of it's sequels.

I only downloaded this because the "new shiny" of the demo and I wanted something to play on Switch while I watched the news tonight. I had no intention of buying it.

But this demo made a pretty good first impression on me. I really like what I played so far about an hour and half in. Played Cyrus' opening and really enjoyed it. I like the charting mechanic of the combat and I appreciate that the combat wasn't as spammy as a lot of JRPGs. The look and music is great. Even the writing seems crisp and minimalist in a way I GREATLY appreciate (overwriting/acting is one of the biggest downfalls of JRPGs in my view).

So now I'm firmly in the "if the reviews are good count me in" camp. My only real worry is if it becomes a slog or if the story doesn't go anywhere. But from what I played, it makes a very very good first impression.

When you boot the game it says it locks off some higher level quests and has some barriers, etc. I'm not sure how far it lets you go, but I'm kind of tempted to just keep playing too if it's possible...

The number on the diamond is how many attacks it'll take to break the enemy's defense using weapons/magic the enemy is weak to. Makes fights so much better when you shatter their defenses.

Yeah, I'll be keeping my preorder. Started with Therion, and met H'aanit. Enjoying the battle system and the old school style a LOT. Very small gripes. I'd like character portraits on dialogue, but I don't need it. I like the chibi and a regular proportioned character models individually, but sometimes together it looks a little weird. Therion's intro boss fight in particular (not really spoilers but)
the boss you meet is in chibi mode before the fight, and regularly proportioned and way taller than Therion during the fight
. And some of the scenes kind of drag if you listen to all the dialogue. I might actually turn voices off.

Other than that, it was a blast.

I started as the Hunter, found Ophelia and am doing her chapter 1 now.

Digging this a lot more than the previous demo! Turned the vignetting off and really liked the look of the snow area. Was there some way to view the hunter's list of captured monsters? I couldn't find anything. Also, is there a limit to how many you can hold?

I'm dead set on getting this game. And already loved the first demo and it's my most anticipated game right now.

No reason to download this with the 3 hour limit right?
