User Warned: Console Warring
Damn, Sony totally fucked up the momentum they gained with showing those games they always show for like three years in a Row.
Not really. IN a few days it will die down and the other consoles will still have shit games coming out this year, while a sony spidey will get people excited again and forget. Sony isn't going to change their mind until the start of the new generation. They literally have nothing to lose. I mean their console sales aren't going to suddenly go down to 38 and 17 million like their closest competitors are.

While true, here's the thing- by any metric, on any popular message or social board (Era, N4G, Reddit, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter), plus on enthusiast and mainstream websites, this issue has led to a huge outcry. By any measurable assessment, the Sony community does mind this.
All of which represents a small but loud group. If you were to listen solely to those bases, no f2p game will be making billions. CoD and BF and BFront would not sell over 6 million copies and yet they do.

So if I play on a PS4, even just once, even if I spend no money, my account will have a permanent scarlet letter preventing me from ever playing it on anything other than a smartphone or PC? And if I play it on an Xbox or Switch it is no longer pureblood enough to be played on the PS4?

I mean I know that that's the system but I still can't believe this is allowed.

In the simplest terms, PSN is a poison to your account that you can't get rid of.

It's absolute bullshit.

I guess Sony isn't doing anything because the outcry isn't coming from within the PlayStation community? Or the number affected isn't large enough?

I haven't followed this news so I'm not sure.
I would think the outcry is largely from within the PS community, because this lock account bollocks only affect those who have logged into their Epic account on a PS4 at least once. It would make sense that the victims would be the loudest here.

I know I would be one of them if I had unknowingly played Fortnite on a PS4 that one time and now I'm locked out of cross-progression with the Switch version.

Until we have actual numbers, it's just pure speculation on our part.

What's the most damning to me is that even Nintendo is more open about cross-platform play. I imagine Sony is doing this because it's really tight about the integrity of its bespoke platform. Everything Sony does is much more tied to specific pieces of hardware compared to Microsoft and the worlds of PC or mobile. But Nintendo is arguably even more stringent about its platform, and is willing to do cross-platform with everyone else anyway.

What is this nonsense?

And of course they have something to lose. Making mistakes now can have consequences for the next generation. We've seen this a million times before.

I think your argument is based on an assumption that a good number PS4 Fortnite players actually care about cross progression with Switch and Xbox. I don't think that's the case but I might be wrong.

I have never played this game. But who can stop me from creating an account on Twitter and spamming all the recent Sony tweets.

So you think console warriors are spamming social media in such number that BBC and CNBC took notice, and Sony's share prices fell?

All of what you say is probably true. But it is still anti-consumer and people should continue making noise about it. Even if it falls on deaf ears. This isn't the time to be console warring. I like Sony and the upcoming games on the PS4 too. But this practice is bad to us as gamers. All of us. This is one thing we should all be able to unite on.

Whenever a console maker leads the market they always seem to get arrogant and turn into anti-consumer assholes. These companies never seem to learn the right lessons from being successful. It always becomes a race to the bottom. Then consumers get pissed off and we inevitably get a new market leader who will then start with the bullshit too and the cycle continues.

Glad to see Jim made a video on this issue too. Honestly, the more uproar and outcry there is on this, the more people call Sony out on this, the better.

Happy to see how all of the gamers that do want to play with their friends regardless of console are starting to see who is the one that is not allowing it to happen.

I would think they do, yes, there is literally nothing to be gained in this if you own more than just one of the three traditional console platforms. Even if they don't intend to play Fortnite on Xbox, it still doesn't benefit them at all that their possible one-time log-in on a PS4 will lock them out of cross-progression with the other consoles for possibly forever.

Also, so because it doesn't affect you personally, therefore everything people do must be of malice and trickery? If that's not your point, I'm sorry I don't get what the 2nd part is saying. Why do you rather conjure up some conspiracy that some malicious people are trying to tarnish the name of poor old, but honest lawful good, Sony instead of believing that there are people affected by this bollocks making complaints? Do you not agree that locking progression for multiplatform games is bad for consumers?

I agree with the bolded.

Even if they don't intend to play Fortnite on Xbox, it still doesn't benefit them at all that their possible one-time log-in on a PS4 will lock them out of cross-progression with the other consoles for possibly forever.

Isn't cross progression and play possible between PS4, PC, iOS and Android?

Also, so because it doesn't affect you personally, therefore everything people do must be of malice and trickery?

No. Where did you get that idea? I'm not denying the genuine outrage over locked accounts.

If that's not your point, I'm sorry I don't get what the 2nd part is saying. Why do you rather conjure up some conspiracy that some malicious people are trying to tarnish the name of poor old, but honest lawful good, Sony instead of believing that there are people affected by this bollocks making complaints?

I would request you go back to the first page and read my original post. I was posing a question, not making a statement. But even then, to think that the unaffected people aren't fuelling the fire is kind of naive.

Do you not agree that locking progression for multiplatform games is bad for consumers?

I agree, Sony shouldn't have the last say on cross progression for multiplatform games.

Edit: updated with response.

I'll respond to your post later today. I need to get some sleep.

I buy a multiplayer game on my Android Phone and I can play with users playing the same game on iOS. I buy a multiplayer game on my Mac and I can play with users playing the same game on PC.

I buy a multiplayer game on PS4 and I can play with.... only 'Sony Preferred Platforms'....

Anyone defending this behavior is pure shill.

You know I wouldn't even mind if I can't cross play but let me use my fucking account elsewhere. I'm more pissed about Sony locking my account to the PS4 than cross play.

I can't speak for the other dude talking about game sales n shit, but..

Yo.. it'll take more than Twitter tags to change a company policy. It'll most likely happen when this gen is over if it doesn't get changed in a day or two to reap the good will.

Not saying that the policy shouldn't be changed, it should... but it's been in place since the beginning. Nobody on this planet earth (you, me, epic, an analyst, an executive..) ever seen Fortnite getting this big. It blew up after the BR mode came out and policies were still in place, whatever they may be.

The only time where we ever seen a company fold on policy was in 2013 with the og xbone and this isn't nearly as big as some would like it to be. All the console makers had their stances, philosophies and policies in which they make money. Phil Spencer said the same as such.

People are acting like Sony singled Fortnite out to screw people on this sole game. YES the policy needs to change OR people should actually read that big ass list of agreements instead of holding down mashing X to accept, lol.

And trust me, coming in to say "fuck Sony" is way more shilly than having an actual argument. I've tweeted thing and had some others do the same.

It's absolutey embarrassing. It was embarrassing when they did it on gaf and it's still embarrassing.

And it's pointless. Sony still has an advantage in that you can only play their exclusives on Sony platforms. Why are they so scared that people will be crossplaying with other consoles players on third party games?

With Rocket League, Sony skated past and it died down. Fortnite is absolutely massive and I think they're going to have to come up with a solution this time. And the walls are falling people are going to expect crossplay in their titles. Only a shill would make excuses and underplay why third party games should be locked to systems.

Epic must be quietly laughing. As they started the ball rolling on all this crossplay stuff.

so in the end what is the reason for this? sony doesn't want cross platform play because people might buy fortnite dlc on another console and lose that money? they dont want other console players to get access to the ps4 pool of players for other online games? sony should be wanting games on their consoles to be as viable as possible and that include giving them access to as many players as possible.
The PS4 is the "winner" of this gen with the most console sold. It has a large playerbase. When you're the top dog, you get lazy and think you can get away with more than you actually can. This situation shows Sony likely can't this time. Cross platform has shown to be big factor in gaming and will likely be more so next gen. If Sony continues this shut in mindset, this could hurt them pretty bad in terms of their image.

I posted a tweet about this to @Playstation 2 days ago, voicing my displeasure about this issue. I'm a fan of Playstation, but this is a real shitty business practice. It's bad PR for Sony and they need to pull their finger out and fix this BS.

Everyone just needs to keep applying the pressure.

It's great to see more people talk about the issue. Jim Sterling jumping on the hottest controversy is not shocking, but since this is a theme that needs to be brought up constantly it's good.

There are issues with this video though. First of all, if a user typed out all that is said in this video as his own opinion, said user would likely get banned, considering Jim is calling Sony "useless turds", "stupid arseheads" and such. Ironic the thread gets to exist because this is said in a video. Second, it's odd he's saying "Nintendo is ahead of the pack" while "Microsoft is just fine", considering who started pushing the current trend of crossplaying. Third, when he claims only people who only play on PS4 aren't really bothered by this is only partially true: PS4 does still crossplay with PC, Mac and mobiles, so if you juggle those platforms you're fine per se, though you gotta keep in mind you will never be able to use your account unless Sony changes something on other non-Sony consoles, which is bad.

But at the end of the day, I'll repeat what I said in other threads related to cross-play and cross-progression. I don't care who pushes what, nor I care which company this benefits and which it doesn't. Having the option to play a game, share your content, unite with more players, more systems is always going to be a positive, and there is nothing else to be said, really. I'm not Sony's, Microsoft's, Nintendo's, Epic's, Psyonix's, Mojang's, etc. shareholder, therefore I have no interest in knowing who wins by blocking it. All I know that I, as a consumer, lose out from the lack of a total cross-play and cross-progression system, therefore I'll be vocal about the issue, sharing my knowledge and experience in the theme where I can (where it makes sense, of course). Trust me, all my gaming buddies at this point know about this. The news is spreading like wildfire, and it'll only stop once Sony addresses this hopefully.

As much as i want crossplay, i don't see what's in it for Sony? Probably they will remain with their current position, than they will announce crossplay for next gen, they are winning this gen, why lose more sales by allowing Crossplay with competitors and giving less reason for people to buy ps4. But when they do it next gen they will seem like the forward thinking company and will make people buy their consoles.

How will they seem forward thinking when literally everyone else is already doing it?

That is still besides the point in that their demanding account lock ins is incr dinky anti-consumer.

It's clumsily said but he's right, in 2 months there will be Spiderman, RDR2, FIFA, etc.. people will still buy PS4 exclusives and then Sony will announce exclusives at TGS or PlayStation Experience

Next gen Sony will come with a PS5 BC PS4 games thanks to simply architecture of PS4, momentum from PS4 exclusives like TLOU2, Ghost of Tsushima, Death Stranding

People are complaining right now about it but except Fortnite, what does Sony win by accepting cross play with other platforms especially Xbox players when there is enough players on PS4 ?

It's not a plus value this cross play, people overestimate it as a choice for a console buy, even if I think Sony's decision is weird and I hope they will allow this for Fortnite

How to lose your lead next generation in 1 e3.

A sequel to the 2006 classic

Please. PS3 recovered from it's disastrous start to match Xbox 360 by end of generation and it didn't affect PS4 at all.

People make cross play out to be a bigger thing than it actually is. Yeah it sucks that Epic are blocking the accounts out of spite but it's not going to force Sony to support cross play.

Posting this image again since some people still need it, or rather, pretend to still need it.

Between cross play, backwards compatibility, a more clear and opem indie platform and a actual desire to expand their first part offering MS sure is adding up a lot of "small things".

It's mirroring Sony's return to form late last gen and MS fumbling and ticking off it's user base so much it's hard not see the exoect same outcome.

And of course Nintendo out here killing it too.

Betweem a return of Asshole Sony versus 2 competent competitors, I know where my bet would go.

I can't see that happening at all but if it does it won't be because of cross play. It's hard to know how big of a deal this really is outside of people like us on message boards and twitter. My guess is not so big.
