Sony, content to remain a complete arse about crossplay, has locked Epic Games accounts to the PS4 version of Fornite. Nobody was warned about this until PS4 players tried to play on their Switch.

Glad to see Jim made a video on this issue too. Honestly, the more uproar and outcry there is on this, the more people call Sony out on this, the better.

Yeah, that could happen as well. Hopefully it doesn't take that long but I guess it is better to expect it than to be dissapointed.
Not that agree at all, but business/PR wise that would be the biggest moment for them. Hopefully it isn't at all going to last that long, but... never can tell when these companies will make an actual smart decision based on their consumers.

I very much doubt they will give in, they are winning by a so big margin that they don't care anymore, and when the gape starts to reallu close next gen will be here so it doesn't matter.
I'd love if they allowed it tho, a friend almost bought a Switch to play Fortnite (and Odyssey) but when he saw he couldn't use his account he walked back

User Warned: Trolling and thread derailment attempt
Damn, Sony totally fucked up the momentum they gained with showing those games they always show for like three years in a Row.

The chatter about this isn't gonna go away.

It's not like Fortnite is gonna suddenly become less popular.

Sony's social media will continued to be hammered by this until they give in. They are complete idiots if they think otherwise. They're actively damaging their brand at this point.

so in the end what is the reason for this? sony doesn't want cross platform play because people might buy fortnite dlc on another console and lose that money? they dont want other console players to get access to the ps4 pool of players for other online games? sony should be wanting games on their consoles to be as viable as possible and that include giving them access to as many players as possible.

Even without cross-play, the account locking thing seems completely unethical as a business practice.
Isn't that anti-consumer?
People have spent money on these accounts and I dont't remember being warned that the money I spend will be locked out of use on specifically the Switch and Xbox?

Almost seems like there could be a lawsuit over it.

EDIT - or is this a matter of 'DLC bought on PS4 stays on PS4' situation? The fact that fortnite on PS4 is crossplay with mobile/PC changes that though...

Nice video Jim, call them out with their anti-consumer move.

The pessimist in me believes that they will ride this out till the next console and announces 'cross-play' as a 'feature' which is just disgusting.

I have a new idea for a Jim Sterling video:

"JIM STERLING FORCED ME TO LIE ABOUT WHAT A BELL-END IS TO MY NINE YEAR OLD"

I told her it was Quasimodo's fate at the end of Hunchback of Norte Dame.

I can see Sony not doing anything and when they go to reveal their next console they will pull a "drop the mic" announcement of complete and total cross-play.

This makes no sense at all. Build up hate and damage your reputation over 2 years for the "hype" of "behold. I have finally responded!"?

Not to mention, this would require cooperation from other platforms who may well no longer care to deal with them at the start of a new generation when the meta is unknown.

Companies always get arrogant as hell when they get on top and for whatever dumb Ass reason can't stay there. I used to love Sony.

Definitely.

We will see what happens. Our best hopes is for people to keep pushing and pushing which should hopefully push Sony to address it. Although like you said, they are winning this gen and the winners always decide when to use their chess pieces if they feel threatened or need to maximize profits.

You also have different people running the show.

Andrew House is gone. Jack Tretton is gone. The people that were so influential with Sony's "pro consumer" messaging and philosophy back in 2013 are no longer there.

I never said it would make any sense at all, but I wouldn't be surprised at all for this move to be done. Especially when this occurred back with the Xbox version and they just skated on through the outrage with not a major blip to their numbers or any major partner making a move.

Hopefully this time they will really feel the pressure and hopefully a major partner will actually make a move. At this point, all we can do is keep the pressure on very high and wait to see if Sony buckles. :)

They'll likely lift the account blocking, but I don't think they'll allow crossplay this gen. That will be free press for PS5's announcement.

I guess Sony isn't doing anything because the outcry isn't coming from within the PlayStation community? Or the number affected isn't large enough?

I haven't followed this news so I'm not sure.

Yeah. The suits took over a while ago. Pretty soon as the PS4 started to sell record amounts, the mothership started to exert more control.

I wouldn't expect cross play to become a thing even if Sony is on the losing side next gen. To the suits, it's a competitive advantage and they won't be giving it away. The PR statement given pretty much confirms it.

So if I play on a PS4, even just once, even if I spend no money, my account will have a permanent scarlet letter preventing me from ever playing it on anything other than a smartphone or PC? And if I play it on an Xbox or Switch it is no longer pureblood enough to be played on the PS4?

I mean I know that that's the system but I still can't believe this is allowed.

House was around last year. This year there is new leadership both at PlayStation and Sony as a whole so I'm quite curious how they feel stepping into their new positions and then getting hit with this.

No. It's hard to distinguish community outcry from trolling when it comes to videogames on Twitter.
While true, here's the thing- by any metric, on any popular message or social board (Era, N4G, Reddit, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter), plus on enthusiast and mainstream websites, this issue has led to a huge outcry. By any measurable assessment, the Sony community does mind this.
