I wonder if it was the same policy that meant you couldn't take your in game currency from one platform to another in GTA online.

And why you could only transfer your destiny character from PS3 aPS4 and 360-Xbox?

There is no reason to not allow crossplay with third party games. Honestly, it should be up to the developers/publishers not Sony. You look paranoid and greedy when every other platform allows it. I refuse to play any crossplay game on PS4 out of spite. I'll that take business to Switch or Xbox.

I don't really give a shit about Sony's crossplay stance, which I find understandable, but locking gamer's accounts into an ecosystem for a specific game is horseshit.

Fix that.
For games that want to have a shared ecosystem anyway.

Somehow I can't imagine companies like Activision/EA ever letting people share their purchased content between platforms. They want you to buy that shit multiple times.

Well I've made the decision to cancel my ps4 plus and and I'm going to buy any game I can on any other platform possible. I'm so happy Yakuza has gone to pc.

If I wasn't so hyped for last of us 2 I'd probably sell my ps4.

How can your official response be "we've sold 80 million ps4s so just play with them" terrible

This is easy to believe but also a painful reminder of how homogeneous gamers are.

Are people lying when they say almost 50% of gamers are female? Everytime I see these statistics Im reminded something is up. Maybe if you take into consideration the mobile market and, like, Facebook and social games you get to that 40+% but when it comes to consoles? I think its bullshit.

These results are from an online survey of early adopters about the people in their household who want a Switch .
The biggest number of respondents is likely males within that specific age category and because they are males of a specific age category, it is unlikely they have others in their household who wanted a switch more than they did.
That's what I surmise anyway.
It sit's very broadly in line with the demographics from youtube viewership for gaming related videos. It's more a reflection of "gamers" rather than a reflection of the general games playing public.

Ask about why they are holding accounts hostage,
somehow turn it into a stealth brag about sales

lol arrogant Sony indeed
Downfall imminent
Yeah, the arrogance here is reminding me a lot of Xbox circa 2013. Right now we're seeing them think they're untouchable, but it's only a matter of time before this comes to a head, and then it'll be "we've listened" and something about "our commitment to gamers" along with some free lootboxes

Same answer my friend - kids don't care about "best graphics" or "best version" they care about being included, about fitting in with the rest of their friend group and not being the one left out - and right now most kids have PS4s.

If their friends are all playing the PS4 version of Minecraft, they don't care that it's the worst version or whatever, they only care that they can't join in. Nowadays kids are socialising via headsets through games on consoles after school, not in person at each other's houses - it's where plans are made and in-jokes happen and what they then talk about at school the next day - if you're not part of that you're not one of the gang and that makes kids desperately unhappy.

Very few parents will buy their kid two expensive consoles - kids have to pick one, and they pick what their friends have.
I'm willing to bet a hell of a lot more kids are playing on iOS than PS4. And obviously iOS + Android + Kindle + PC + Xbox + Switch + more dwarves the fuck out of PS4.

Sony's MO is to restate their policy, say they're open to listening, and wait for the controversy to blow over. But Fortnite is huge and will keep growing. It may be the game that forces them to grant an exception at the very least, but they'll need to be dragged there by angry consumers and media exposure if it happens.

Everyone who cheers at the PS5 announcement when they announce they're supporting cross play needs to be hit with a baseball bat.

on that day, we're gonna see a lot of 'wooow finally, can you whiners shut up now?'... from people who previously ' ' didn't care about the whole crossplay debate ' ' but for some reason felt compelled to explain the entire situation from the perspective of a Sony shareholder more than once

It's the last day of E3, what game journalist will have the balls to ask Sony about this on camera?

If Giantbomb gets someone from Sony on their event (they've gotten Yosp before) Jeff will most definitely bring this up. He brought it up to Phil Spencer* in yesterday's feature.

On topic, really bad form from Sony on this, no other way about it.

* said Harrison before.

Locking external accounts to specific platforms is wrong and should be fixed.
About cross play they can do whatever they want, it's their ecosystem. Until they feel it's in their interests to protect it in this way nothing will change.

Good. Sony's decision to block cross-play is anti-consumer and they should receive all the flack they can get for it.

i was hoping this would happen, getting mainstream coverage of this anti-consumer behavior is important to get them to probably change something.

These games journalists are usually really soft on Sony face to face

I hope we see them show some spine

The difference between this and, say, the Battlefront debacle, is that the head of EA had to have the fear of god put into him by the CEO of Disney. Sony is at the top of their particular food chain so they can be petulant about this until the end of time.

if this gen taught us anything, it's that nothing is guaranteed.
Not really it was mostly a return to form with Sony and Nintendo leading once again and MS unable to do so. This won't change next gen especially since the Xbox brand is mainly relevant in the US. And if Fortnite is still relevant when the PS5 releases those who have their accounts locked in with Sony are more lickely to follow them

More kids have iPhones, which is crossplay with PC/Xbox/Switch

PS4 DOES crossplay with PC and mobile (IOS and Android etc), just not with Switch or Xbox.

PS4 + PC + all mobile devices is what dwarfs Switch + Xbox (because PS4 has a far higher install base than Xbox + Switch combined.)

That aside, what does that have to do with console sales? Kids with iPhones/mobiles still buy consoles, and can still crossplay on their iPhones/mobiles with their PS4s - I'm sorry I really don't get the point you are trying to make?

Can someone explain to me why people care so much about crossplay? I mean its not like PS4's userbase is exactly small, but willing to know more about this fiasco and why it matters so much. Thanks

This is very on brand.

There is nothing stopping the next Xbox from out performing the PS5 if Sony continues to make anti-consumer moves and Microsoft continues to appear consumer friendly. Console loyalty is for children, people will buy the thing they think is giving them the most value.

The only thing that matters is if that kid has a mobile, and decides to play 1 round on his PS4, he is forever blocked from using that account on his Xbox or Nintendo. Even if he bought everything on his mobile or PC, it is tied to the PS4.

This specific fiasco is more about the Fortnite accounts being held hostage by Sony's anti-consumer policies. If Sony would allow Crossplay, then this wouldn't even be an issue.

To answer your actual question, people care about crossplay because people game on lots of different devices these days. Cultural games like Minecraft and Fortnite are bigger than individual consoles, so if your brother or co-worker or classmate wants to play one of these games it's extremely easy to do so because they're on everything. Maybe your co-worker doesn't have a home console but they have an iPhone, then you can play Fortnite with them. Unless they have a switch and you have a PS4, or they have an Xbox and you have a PS4.

THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH CROSSPLAY!

People are pissed because THEY SPENT REAL MONEY ON OTHER PLATFORMS and Sony is LOCKING THOSE PURCHASES on to the PS4 and there is NO WAY to reverse the lock.

It's just being able to play with friends on other platforms.

It's not really as big a deal as people make out (don't @ me, it's never been a big selling point ever) but from a consumer point of view it's entirely positive because it lets them play with their friends on other platforms and not having it while other platforms do makes you look really backwards.

Overall, the issue with not being able to use your ID on another platform is a bigger deal than not having crossplay between platforms. Sony shouldn't have any say on where your ID for a third party game is used.

I understand :) I wasn't actually commenting on the account content block, (which I am against) I was saying that based on what I've seen with retail sales figures, Sony won't change their stance on crossplay with other consoles because of how much they gain in sales as a direct result of not allowing crossplay. I hope they do unlock the account content for people, but I don't personally believe they will ever allow crossplay with Switch and Xbox.

MS got arrogant and made some decisions that led to where they're today. all it takes for sony is to be arrogant and make a few wrong decisions, assuming they're invincible and they can get away with anything, to lose their dominance in the high-spec console game to MS.

Can someone explain to me why people care so much about crossplay? I mean its not like PS4's userbase is exactly small, but willing to know more about this fiasco and why it matters so much. Thanks
more important than crossplay is that sony is keeping people's progression hostage. that's what pissing most people off.

Yes they will allow with Switch now but Xbox never
Will they allow with Switch in Rocket League? Paladins? All the other crossplay games? Because it will be pretty shitty of them in the eyes of Psyonix and other devs if they make an exception for Fortnite but not for their games.

I don't think the social outrage is anywhere as big as you think it is.

It's big enough that Sony's stocks took a hit on the news, according to one of those articles, so... yeah, it's big enough.

Lol there won't be a downfall unless the PS5 is $499+

I can imagine a scenario where, if Fortnite is still popular when the next generation of consoles hits and Sony doesn't have the userbase numbers to leverage 3rd-parties to release games on their system as a matter of fact, Epic passes on releasing Fortnite on PS5. Openly. And publicly. And don't think they won't, Epic's undoubtedly already displeased with the situation they're in because of this mess.

If you seem to be of the belief that such a scenario won't have a material impact on them, that's your choice.

Fortnite is the biggest game on Earth. Over 100 million people playing. Fortnite is bigger than Playstation right now. If they see a meaningful number of people change their behaviour and stop playing Fortnite on PS4, it might feel the pressure to change. Likewise, being the biggest game on Earth, just about everyone has heard of it. So if the media keeps up the heat, and mom's and dad's everywhere read different variations of 'PS4 is bad for people that want to play Fortnite', that might also influence Sony to change. At some point the negative consequences have to outweigh their perceived 'benefit' here.

Indeed. Every other platform fortnite is on allows you to pick up where you left off with the same account except if you played on PS4 first. You basically have to give up your account , all your purchases and progress because sony wont let you take your epic account anywhere else.

I mean, I wouldn't say it has nothing to do with crossplay. Sony locking the purchases is definitely issue A, but many people are upset that crossplay between PS4 and the other consoles too.
