Which textures look worse to you?

Its largely the furred characters that look strange, particularly with less colour. also fox has a duck bill now.
Ive noticed a few characters had really janky looking animations like lucario that hopefully arent final. The art style reminds me a lot of Brawl which is the worst of the series imo, its just pulling it off better than Brawl ever did. I think smash 4 nailed it with its vibrant palette.

This is embarrassing, considering the development time, the help from Bandai-Namco, that it's only coming in late 2018 and since its base on the WiiU edition of the game,it should really be better in every possible way.

But to be honest, the WiiYU version, looked great.... when it came out. Also, Nintendo often improve the graphic at the very last moment, so who knows how it will turn?

I feel like this video (and I'm watching in 1080p60fps, looks shitty compared to how the game looked during the Ninty Direct. So I don't know if something happened or changed while they edited this video together or what... Yeah, just pulled it up on youtube, def looks different to me.

Yeah overall there isn't a lot of HD footage. Even Nintendo's footage is lackluster.

DK looks like hot garbage, hopefully he'll look better at release. I blame Ice climbers.
DK looks like he was ripped out of Brawl.... just put in the DKCTF model please.

Blargh, why everything got so white? I hate this kind of "ilumination".

Pikachu looks like it was on bleach for 2 weeks.

Its the meele -> brawl "upgrade" all over again. Pass.

You really don't want to compare direct feed footage with compressed youtube video footage. A lot of that softness is definitely from compression artifacts.

Lol yeah I was just wondering if this was even direct feed, which seemed unlikley.

This. You can see how compressed the video is from YouTube. We need two direct captures to really get a good comparison. That said, the improvements made to lighting and textures seems significant.

This entire thread seems baseless. Why is there a video comparing direct captures to encoded streamed video of an early, unfinished, demo build?

Part of the problem with this comparison is the source for the Ultimate footage. It's clearly compressed where as the Wii U footage is not.

Incidentally, this is probably my least-favorite Smash musical theme

True, but it does show that the work being done in the graphical department is pretty significant. Personally, I prefer the WiiU version on some of the shots (particularly that of Shulk) because of vibrant colors and clarity, but the Switch version is clearly technically better already, and I'm sure it will improve in some ways.

Hes on a brightly lit stage. Hes textures are just reacting to the light. You can see hes nice and yellow in more dimly lit stages.
Its not just him, you can see every caracheter has a white aura(look at villager head). I see this in a lot of ubisoft games and almost every port of a next gen game for switch, so one could say its next-gen thing, but for me, looks hideus.

What a shit comparison lmao. They are pausing the video and comparing that to direct-feed screens. Just think about that for a second.

A lot of people in here are mistaking the addition of self-shadowing on character models for the usage of a PBR pipeline. I'm also pretty sure that the game is not running on UE4.

I just rewatched the official upload of the trailer and it all looks better than Wii U IMO
Lighting looks better but I don't like the return of the desaturated colors from Brawl.
They aren't, it's the comparison video's source

Rewatch the official upload in 1080p

I don't know how anyone can look at this video and tell me this doesn't look substantially better than Smash 4 in every way.

Are people trolling? The Switch game looks noticeably better (even compressed), poor DK aside. *Rubs eyes*

I mean, sure the colors are more muted (I dig it) but like the textures and lighting are clearly better... right? No?

Because Nintendo uses some extreme hot garbage inner glow on the moddels from most sides.
The same rubbish is used in Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee.

I think the models (sans DK) look better but as a huge fan of extremely saturated colorful games I'm disgusted by how washed out pikachu and charizard look lmao

This is a terrible comparison video. Not only is the Ultimate footage of poor quality, but the selected images of comparison are weird and undetailed.

It just reeks of rushed content for the sake of clicks, and that bothers me since Gamexplain have had some great comparison footage in the past.

It still looks better.

The lighting, textures on the stage, and the character models too.

This is compressed Switch footage too.

Look the blurry brick texture on Wii U vs a better and higher resolution on Switch. Look how much better is the flower basket and te flowers are true 3D now. Compare the Wood in the house in background.
On Pikachu you can notice how the new ligth make it looks more 3D, like a real doll. Look a his shadow, It is casted on the entire stage's objects, not only in the floor, like on Wii U.
I think that the only thing that looks better on Wii U is the color saturation.

what?
it's a lot better.

after putting hundreds and hundreds of hours in Smash 4, yeah it was obvous second 1 for people like us.

After putting in 1500 hours into the Wii U version it was immediately apparent that they are using alot of the previous games assets.

The only things that really stand out are the new animations, special effects and lighting.

Is it better? Yes. Alot better? No.

A lot of the comparisons make it seem like the Switch just uses washed out less colorful versions of the Wii U's models.

There have of course been a lot of improvements here and there, but in several of the examples I actually prefer the Wii U version, notably from an art direction perspective. Not the best comparison either way.

Uhhh

Pikachu with hats on employ subtle differences in their color palettes. The one in the Smash Ultimate screenshot isn't as saturated because it's palette is literally designed to be less saturated. It's to differentiate the characters more in mirror matches. So yes, it's still better in every way.

Conversely, that Smash Wii U Pikachu is a slightly more greenish tint than what it actually should be.

In the case of the inner glow I don't need better image quality to judge the effect.

The inner glow on the models is a straight visual downgrade for me.
It looks horrible and is simply overdone like the horrible bloom examples in the PS3/X360 era.

In this comparison the effect is absent and it looks miles better:
ZHSmuGC.jpg

Or is this example visually really bad because Bowser doesn't has extreme pronounced inner glowing on the outlines of his model and his colors are not totally desaturated?
Something Nintendo should fix?

No, it's the other way around and they should remove this nonsense from Pokemon Let's Go too.
God I hope this shit doesn't make it's turn on Gen 8 too.

After MK8, I feel this pre 2014 Luigi so dumb,
Luigi is a complete cipher depending on what game he's in. In mainline games he's an enthusiastic go-getter. In Luigi's Mansion he's a scaredy-cat. In Smash he's awkward and clumsy. In Mario Kart he looks like he's about to go for the jugular.

My favorite is Luigi's Mansion 2, where he's just in a perpetually exasperated "oh boy here we go again" mode.

The simple hard lighting on Wii U is absolutely worse on a technical level, but I think stylistically is a better choice, at least from what I've seen so far. That being said the other improvements beyond lighting are huge and make things look better in situations where the lighting and coloration are close
