Yeah, I assumed (like many others) that it would launch alongside paid online. Now I'm wondering how they're going to get folks to sign up. Splatoon 2? Fortnite (if it requires paid online)?

Probably not, but if they do it will just be a few stages you do with every character like in Brawl. There's no way that the developers will create 67+ unique BTS stages.

Were you reading the last speculation thread? There were a decent number of people expecting Eevee after the announcement of Let's Go Eevee.
The way they're handling the PR around clones this time around, they don't really. They're being announced in a different way.
I wouldn't be surprised if they just shadow drop a quick Dark Samus or Shadow trailer at some point, with no warning or fanfare as if it was just a regular trailer for Smash.

I don't really think DK looks worse. In smash 4 it's just a more realistic style texture and some weird overlay fur wrapped around him. It's not like we had the fur shading from tropical freeze, smash 4's DK was actually very similar to his brawl look. I do actually think the texture work is better in ultimate, but I can unserstand not liking his coloring as much

Yeah, I think this is the best-looking DK in Smash. I like how it evokes the flatter, more textured look of his DKC renders, as well as the brighter colors schemes.
I'm expecting 5 more at this point (excluding echoes) for an even 70, but I was just pointing out that the wording used implies multiple remaining newcomers, so more than 1.

To summarize what we agreed would constitute a port:
"the general community consensus following release (or E3/Smash Invitational, where we'll likely have the answer) is that the game is a port of Smash Wii U in the vein of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, as opposed to something akin to Brawl>Wii U." This is also somewhat contentious at the moment.
So, my thoughts are personally that this would for all intents and purposes be Smash 5, but I can certainly see how people would argue there's enough ambiguous up there to argue the opposite. So, I'm willing to let this be settled in two ways:

- The Roster of the previous game will return in full, barring an allotment of 2 3rd party characters who may have been cut due to licensing reasons. This is true of SSBU

- Excepting Link, who we've seen will have the breath of the wild design, all returning character models from the previous game will carry over to the new game, with some consideration for minor stylistic updates. Minor stylistic updates may have been too poorly defined, it seems many characters are very similar, though characters like Zelda, Ganonodorf, and Game and Watch got pretty big overhauls.
- Likewise, all character animations and moves will carry over, with the previous consideration for stylistic updates. Same potential ambiguity as above
- All trophies from the Wii U version return, keeping the same models and descriptions. Currently Unknown
- The soundtracks will remain largely the same, with more than 80% of the music being assoicated with Roster additions, allowing 20% of the new music to be arrangements for currently represented franchises. Currently Unknown

The big thing for me is that they remodeled DK to make him more accurate to his franchise and the whoop-de-doo in his hair has physics now. A bit of fur shading would be nice, but the blended alpha plains in Smash 4 didn't look good.
I think most people were generally of the mind of not expecting Daisy to be more than a low-key clone. She was always possible as a costume or clone, but that was muddied thanks to the bad faith arguments of one poster.

Maybe Celica's could be attached to the Choose Your Legends Round 2 trailer for FE Heroes - Shulk got a Japan-only direct for his newcomer trailer, and as you said, the more low-key way Daisy got announced would make me think it'd be possible to see some new clones occasionally show up in a manner similar to how Sonic got a quick ingame confirmation trailer for Smash 4.
