I think enemies will have contextual actions like when the big guy throws ellie over the counter. A lot will say that's scripted, but I think enemies will have context actions like the player does. Amazing
Likely, Uncharted 4 had a lot of that with your companions, where depending on what you do to a enemies they'd follow up in a specific way, was really cool.

Twitch chat sure was terrible during this showing but even they had their moments. "Why is she killing all of these blind people" was a personal favorite.

Am not his biggest fan but pretty sure he was doing that because Ellie said she smelt like a dumpster.

Absolutely agreed. I think it is a lot of work but Naughty Dog is capable of putting in that amount of effort. I think depending on what is near you there will be a variety of different actions that the AI can do to damage you. Perhaps you get thrown into a wall, over a table, into a car, on to the ground. I think the player and enemy dodging works like that as well - if you dodge near an object I think there are animations to interact with that. Again, TONS of work but ND shows time and time again that they are willing to go there.

They're just on a completely different world compared to everyone else

this trope comes to mind
Often, especially in older works (to the extent that they are found in older works, of course), gay characters just aren't allowed happy endings. Even if they do end up having some kind of relationship, at least one half of the couple, often the one who was more aggressive in pursuing a relationship, thus "perverting" the other one, has to die at the end.

Not America
Man, some of the hot takes in here. And I thought ERA was supposed to have a higher level of discourse.

Anyway, just watched the 36 min IGN panel with 3 devs and 2 actors. It provided a good number answers but I wish O'Brian would have asked about whether (given ND's intention to make the violence in the game repulsive) the player can traverse the world with as little violence as possible (against human opponents who, according to Neil Druckman, are now being humanized to ensure that they're seen as much more than simple video game baddies/obstacles).

This game makes the new God of War seem like if it was rated E for everyone lol.

I love brutal games and I loved the TLOU. Can't wait to play this brutal and violent game.

"Wolf, she came through here. Dammit. Double back. Go."

I'm surprised no one hasn't noticed it yet but that sounds exactly like Annie Wersching, the voice actor that played Tess in the first game.

Just a little curiosity that I found out recently. The maker of my favorite TLoU video, is currently working on the game as a video editor.

sure, you can tell the difference. but why would it not being real somehow makes it 'enjoyable'? particularly, when it goes out of its way to so closely resemble the real thing? :) ...
"Enjoyable" is such a weird term. You can enjoy the game acknowledging that violence is brutal. Nothing really wrong with that. There are brutal movies and TV shows and plenty of people find them enjoyable. Not sure where the disconnect is.

Sony's Fall 2019 release for sure. They should release a version in theaters for an Oscar nomination too while they are at it.

Graphics look superb, but otherwise it looks like more TLOU to me, which is good enough but possibly not the jump I had hoped for.

I'm thinking there are likely more gameplay elements and mechanics to be revealed, but i do think they've already iterated quite a lot:
  • Deeper melee combat with dodging elements
  • Increased crafting options with the bow and arrow
  • Smarter AI that actually communicates with each other
  • Ability to go prone and squeeze through environments
  • Hiding in grass, but with caveats rather than insta-stealth
  • Damage that sticks! (the arrow needing to be pulled out)
  • Ellie can jump!
On top of all this the super seamless animations and emotive expressions on NPCs adds so much to the emotion! I think the realism played a huge part in the success of the last of us, so I think the increased fidelity does more than just help the game look pretty.

okay, here's the disconnect: on the one hand, you've got naughty dog claiming that this hardcore, 'realistic' fictional violence is deliberate:

"We're making a game about the cycle of violence and we're making a statement about violent actions and the impact they have on the character that's committing them and on the people close to them," he said. "And our whole approach is to say, 'We want to treat this as realistically as possible.' When you stab someone—if you watch reference videos, which we have, it's gross and it's messy and it's not sanitized like you see in most movies and games. And we wanted to get the player to feel that."

so, the intention is, yes, the graphic violence is there because they want us to feel something...

on the other hand, we've got you saying the game can be enjoyed while acknowledging that the violence is brutal - because, after all, it's fictional, not real...

so i'm supposed to feel 'something'. but not really. & there's the disconnect: if i'm supposed to feel 'something', but not really, then what the hell is it i'm supposed to be feeling? :) ...

Not sure if posted. Senior animators breakdown of the trailer.

https://www.resetera.com/threads/la...by-motive-senior-tech-animator-read-op.48827/

From the thread; the author of the video isn't sure if the prone moves and others are scripted or systemic, but ND have already confirmed that all these things, eg going in to prone, squeezing through gaps, hiding under trucks, dodging attacks etc, are all player enabled systemic moves.

You are not supposed to be feeling anything. You can fee whatever you like. I'm one of those who believes that games are art. So it's up to you what you take from a game. It's just like with a good movie (i.e. History of Violence). The director intent does not really matter. Your reading could be as good as director's. I guess if you don't believe that games are art and have to be told how to interpret the game, it's a separate argument. But I can't help you there because it's not an opinion I hold.

I don't get it? Can someone please explain why this is offensive to some?

Idk...maybe he was using the spray as like a "ewww gays" type of moment. Spraying them away like disgusting flies or something. I have no idea. Whatever he did, it's got people talking and in the end, that means more good things for his bank account.

Sounds like you know exactly why some people would be upset.

well, in that case, & until the game proves otherwise, when it comes to turning the graphic violence up to eleven, i'm just feeling 'new lara croft', b-movie levels of exploitation/manipulation as much as anything else ('see her brutalize! see her brutalized!'). particularly when it's being shown removed from context, as in these trailer. i'm hoping i'll enjoy the game (really love the original), but i'm not really crazy about this whole 'anger' concept, & what we've seen as a result of it so far. i've got some fond memories of ellie...

that's all :) ...

You know what your post reminds me of? People saying
Henry and Sam dying
in the first game reinforced the
"black people die first in horror movies"
trope. And I mean that as in how nonsensical it is.
