I'm curious if Naughty Dog could alter her personality slightly depending on how many people you choose to kill in the game. Altering her thoughts as she sees enemies and tells herself they need to die or try to sneak through whichever would also effect the ending in a way if it came down to player choice...it would make it for you of course, but having a slight alteration.

don't you think it's too early to even talk about the story , obviously Neil making all think that's the case , like 1st reveal when everyone think Joel is dead.

actually, it might be about her mother .

They will obviously never show off the entire story in a trailer (and that's good). What else is there to talk about then the story? Look, I'm not hyped for TLOU2 because of the graphics or because of the brutality. GamePlay looks fine, but as said I think it was scripted. TLOU 1 never played like in the original trailers either, but that's maybe on me. Who knows. It will probably play just like Tlou 1, which is fine with me. I never thought it played bad and I enjoyed the gameplay.
I'm mainly interested because I want to see what else there is for Ellie and Joel. ND once said that they are only going to make a sequel if there is something interesting to tell. I really hope this is the case, because judging this trailer: it looks like videogame revenge story and that's not good enough. At least not for me. Please, I hope there is more to it!

And yes it's fair enough to judge a game by the promotional material. They decided what to show of. You have to keep in mind that is only a small part of the game (hopefully), but still the trailer was created to sell their product. Talking about it and forming an opinion is intended. They just hope everybody is positive about it. My hype on the other side decreased a bit. Am I stupid enough to scream:NO BUY! No, I have to see a lot more before I can form a final opinion. But I'm saying: this looked like a revenge story. I will be disappointed if it is just that.

Other people seem to love it and that's, obviously, fine.

Unnecessary violence in the trailer/game.

Who sat down and thought 'I'm playing TLOU so I can see some ultra violence'? No-one. It was all about the story and gameworld.

But it seems the devs have made extreme violence one of the core tenets of the sequel alongside a bleak and harrowing tone.

Now....im left confused on who the other playable female character will be. I mean it deff can be Ellies mom however flashbacks showing the same religious cult that we never heard of once in the first game would be weird. Could be another love interest for Ellie? That or her and Ellie join forces to take down this faction. If joel will be 'around' maybe this woman replaces joel?

I am, in all honesty I loved the story telling in TLOU but I loved the violence more. It was grounded in the world they made, there is no black and white, just people trying to survive by any means necessary. So ya I am playing it for the violence because while "gross" its the realistic nature that gravitates me towards it more.

There's something wrong with you if violence - because of its 'realistic nature' in a videogame - is your main draw.

What concerns me is I want to see the infected/monster designs more instead of the boring trope of 'people are the most dangerous thing in a post-apocalyptic world, not the zombies/monsters'. This was a similar approach that The Walking Dead TV series took from series 6. Somehow, the new showrunner thought ultra violence between people was what the audience wanted to see. The zombies and story took a back seat. Ratings plummeted.

What game did you play? The violence is DEFINITELY necessary in this world. And who knows why the cult decides to execute people the way they do, but I can assure you, ritual execution much like the ones we see in this trailer have happened, and still happen to this day in the real world.

It's a genuine depiction of violence, instead of purely glorifying and stylizing it. It's something that has never been done quite this way in video games before. That's not to say that they probably aren't going for the "badass" vibe at some points either (although I personally am solely getting a "fight for your life desperation" vibe from this trailer, and not a "Ellie is such a fucking badass!" vibe whatsoever), but it's not torture porn or a Tarantino movie either.

I'll put this behind spoilers just in case.... call it a hunch...

so.... do y'all remember that "fan art" from marek okon (work on the original game) from 2014?
EllieFanArt.jpg

It came with this little description:

"We all heard the stories over the years. Tales of a girl being out there, immune to all this madness. And we knew that those stories were nothing but wishfull thinking, fairytales passed along by the campfire.
Believing those stories was a good measure of my desperation. I needed to find that girl.
You, who followed me on this hopeless journey choose to do so. Some of you paid the ultimate price for that. For my belief… But here we are, we found the girl. We found the hope.

Be careful and don't let her bite you.

There's got to be some sort of medical condition for when you paint fanarts of the projects you actually worked on. Well I guess its not as much a fanart as a homage to one of the best games I've ever played. I tried to imagine what future holds for Ellie and Joel and came up with this image – Ellie few years older, practicing her tunes, being chased by a woman who will hesitate at nothing to find the cure and save her loved ones."

Okay, ignoring all of the dramatic s about this being a fan art and all of that.... I believe the Laura Bailey mystery woman from the Paris trailer is the same woman that's mentioned in okon's descripition that relates to the art work.

The way I see it as of right now is this: mystery woman is possibly the de facto leader of what's left of the original fireflies from the first game. Based on the name of the cult being something related to burning fire, I believe they are former fireflies that splinter off from the original group to form thier own brand of insanity. The gist of it, is I believe mystery lady goes to Jackson for Ellie and the insanity crew is not far behind her. Witch all collides to leading Ellie to go on her revenge quest. Now the only missing pieces to this are the characters relating to Ellie... since gross mentioned that, I'm leaning towards some of them being kidnapped rather then killed... especially if thier goal is Ellie... honestly I could be wrong about all of this, but I personally think I'm in the right ballpark so to speak...

Where did he say that? Great to hear tho.

Got a link to the video where he said this?

He said this during last night's live videos on game impressions. He said he didn't get to play it but he saw a guy play it while being right next to him. He said he checked several times to make sure that the guy was actually playing the game and he said he was certain he was. The video of it should be up in the morning i reckon. Also, the whole tomb raider dev saying this was fake was brought up in the live podcast easyallies did.

But that's literally been one of the key tenants of the genre since the Romero movies. It's practically one half of any zombie story to see about how people act and respond in these situations. And in any case, they did say that there are going to be more types and classes of infected in this game. This time, we saw the humans for this demo. Maybe we'll see the infected next time. They don't have to show all their cards at once.

Now that you brought this up I remembered, one thing I really want to see in the new game is more dynamic situations where you, the humans, and infected all come into play together in one chaotic mess. TLOU had a scarce few of these situations, opting to mostly keep the infected and human cleanly separated in their own encounters throughout the game. Days Gone is already showng TLOU up in this area, and I'm hoping to see more emergent aspects to the fights in this manner.

This was due to memory limitations on the PS3, especially when it was Joel + Ellie. In Left Behind when you play as just Ellie they were able to do this.

Yep.

A lot of folks, actually. It's massive reason WHY the story and characters feel so grounded. There is weight, impact, and consequences to the violence. When was the last time you played TLOU? Seriously?

SPOILERS for TLOU1 of course (PS3 version, even)

Was it from their Easy Allies - Day 1 Hands-on Impressions?

I see some Twitch Vods on their page.
This should start at the right time (1 hr 10 min)

Every Naughty Dog game up until now (and this is nitpicking but they deserve it because of the quality shown) has an issue with facial animation and I hope the Last of Us 2 gets rid of it.

I am talking about the facial animation and the lip sync when characters talk during gameplay in game (not in cutscenes). The animation there just sucks. :)

If you dont believe me just boot up Last of Us or Uncharted 4, get to an in game dialogue and look at their mouths. Its really bad and stands out a lot considering the level of animation in every other case.

And that holds true for most games out there and the only one i can remember that had a great work done to this with in game dialogue was the latest God of War. It was not perfect but it was convincingly good and i appreciated the detail.

Hope ND fixes this with TLOU2 cause if not it is going to stand out even more than their previous games due to the insane work done in facial expressions.
You can have a lot more facial targets and bones in a cutscene since you are spending CPU and GPU time on a handful of things, unlike a game scene with AI logic, whatever...
It is pretty normal for games to have worse facial animation in game even if the originally recorded the performance in the same way. in-gameplay facial rigs tend to be much less complex than cutscene ones.

Honestly I wasn't expecting the gameplay to be so satisfying. It looks like they took a lot of the tech developed during Uncharted 4 / TLL and have been mixing it in with elements that are core to The Last of Us. I'm not someone who subscribes to the idea that games should only be "fun", but I'll tell you right now that I had hours of fun with my friends approaching different combat scenarios in the SP, as well as the amazing and brutal multiplayer.

Seeing the expanded crafting system, the evolution of the dynamic melee and surface/reaction we saw back in previous Naughty Dog games (such as improvisational weaponry and environmental interaction), and even more realistic gore / NPC reactions is both thrilling and definitely made me feel slightly uneasy. This is good, and means I'll probably try to be stealthy unless I'm right there with Ellie and upset over something that happened to her / in the story.

Also, Uncharted 4 had some of the best kissing I had ever seen in a videogame, but it was still not completely "there" and I think they have made HUGE strides in the animation of skin over muscle, bone, and other bits of biology to make the kiss in this TLOU2 sequence look pretty amazing. The only thing I think missing, though perhaps this a more stylistic choice, is the wetness of lips from kissing (or lipstick).

It is that you added in the /s in afterwards, because people actually have similar takes on this in all seriousness.

Personally, i feel the whole Ellie is lesbian take is rather natural coming off from TLOU and Left Behind.

Come on, it was obvious sarcasm.
You know how it goes in these types of threads. Better to be upfront that something is sarcasm (Though personally, not a very good take on it) than subjecting yourself to Poe's Law. It triggers people, especially around these kinds of threads.

As for the gameplay though, it was sublime. Ellie looks like a incredible badass, tattoos and all. Can't say i am not intriqued by how this game looks and plays. :)

This is correct, but at the same time the facial animation during dialogue in game is seriously bad. I am not expecting ofcourse animators to work on this on the level of a cutscene, but at least bridge the gap a bit like God of War did.

BladeX I think we saw some improvements to gameplay facial animation in The Lost Legacy, but from the E3 Coliseum panel today it sounds like their facial animation system is improved overall during gameplay, where even enemies can have decent looking expressions and delivery of dialog. We'll see how the end results turn out when the game comes out, but its definitely something they've been working to improve upon.

No. It's in the PS3 and PS4 remaster. When is the last time you played it? I can literally stream some combat for you right now if you'd like to see how gory the original can be.

EDIT - Was only offering because I'm not able to sleep right now and I recently began playing TLOU on my PS4 to see the HDR implementation on my TCL 6 series (its glorious).

That song that's playing during Ellie's slow dance thing before they're about to kiss already has that same kind of "emotional" feeling to me that songs like The Choice, The Way It Was or Home had. Gustavo Santaolalla is a true fucking genius, and I really can't wait to hear that aspect of TLOUII.

Guessing the track isn't out there in its entirety yet, right?

I have to say that this is one of the best structured trailers I've seen. The transition from cutscene to gameplay feels very impactful and it is a clever way to show both the story elements and the gameplay. It reminded me of the famous transition in Deer Hunter where they cut from a wedding celebration to the war in vietnam. It's a drastic change in tone and it gives an interesting perspective on the characters.

I'm usually one of those who rolls his eyes when someone brings up Battle Royale for every new game out there, and I'm not a Pubg or Fortnite fan,
but this game's MP would be perfect for a Battle Royale akin to Hunger Games or the Japanese Original. It has to happen right?

Am I the only one who found the stealth completely stupid and unbelievable?

In the trailer, Ellie is spotted by 5 dudes, goes into the grass and suddenly is invisible?

Then hides under a car, the most obvious place ever, and no one checks from the distance?

Then goes into a bar and everyone knows she is in there, but she manages to stealth kill everyone of them?

Completely unbelievable IMO.

This is what I hate about this new realistic games, the stealth is completely stupid.

It's still a game that has to be fun somehow, what do you expect. You want full realistic gameplay? Ellie dies within 15 seconds of the first encounter and the game would be over

But there are tons of games that get stealth right.

How can you explain when Ellie is spotted, everyone is silent, hearing each sound, yet she can move freely over the leaves, because we must somehow pretend that it makes no noise (although you can hear the noise) and you turn invisible.

It's like little kids pretending they are invisible if they cover their eyes, completely insane.

I have just finished BOTW and you couldn't do that, once they spotted you, you couldn't hide again, unless you ran far away. That stealth was believable, and you had a meter showing how much noise you were doing. (The stealth dungeon was annoying though).

I don't remember a part in the two new Tomb Raider games as stupid as what was shown here, and that game suffered from the same problem.

It takes me out of the game, if it doesn't bother you, good for you.

Yep the European version was censored a little. I got the US import of the remaster for that very reason. I'm pretty sure it was just the MP that was toned down though, not the single player.
