Agree with the responders that the support people likely don't know anything, but wouldn't it be epic (pun) if epic orchestrated this to try to push cross play?
man I could see people actually latching onto this rhetoric the same way people latched onto the "well we don't know the terms of the deal" silliness with Minecraft

What a fucking shitshow. Will this become a trending issue, or fizzle out and be forgotten?

Unacceptable.

This has been going on since before the Switch version came out. It's not something new, it's just getting attention because Sony just fucked over Switch owners and they're very vocal.
There's probably a lot more cross over between Switch and PS4 then Xbox and PS4 too, so more people getting burnt by this shit.
I'm extra annoyed as Sony probably knew they'd face similar backlash with the iOS version, so just allowed it there.

Since you can Access your account across PC/PS4/mobile it seems the policy for Sony is no competing console to console.

its nefarious

Because I believe there is no cross console support for the battle pass between Sony/Xbox versions of Fortnite either.

Before it was XB1 Fortnite didn't play nice with PS4 Fortnite account wise
Yet both let PC and Mobile benefit off cross progression

Now Switch comes into play, XB1 allows the progression to be allowed just as they allow Minecraft
Sony on the other hand hasnt

So we know that much

Now cross play is one thing. Cross progression is another thing

Something with Sony and Epic with their linking has something on the backend be a problem

Why does everyone keep saying Paragon let me tell you some info please:

Paragon could be played PS4 or PC
You could buy in game currency "Gold" with real money
The thing was PC and PS4 Gold were separate from each other
If you bought $10 on PC roughly 1000 Gold, you'll never see it appear on PS4 and the same going the opposite way
What you could was buy items, skins, boosters, that stuff became shared

I'm guessing there's remnants of something that Sony and Epic have to dole out with that's keeping from the account linking being just forgotten

Paragon is Paragon, but whatever deal was struck with whatever linking infrastructure back then, still has some legacy going forward
No one knew Fortnite BR was even a thing 2 years ago, hell there wasn't even cross progression or cross play as it warranted now with certain modes

So it might be that too
Not making excuses, but it can't just be a flip of the switch and everything is golden

Despite having a Pro, going to buy all multiplats on my standard Xbox One. Only time I'll be giving Sony any money is for those games exclusive only to the PS4. Fuck them.

Like some others I originally thought this was strictly about cross-play. Looking at it from a business perspective, Sony blocking cross-play seemed shitty but still understandable as they're the dominant market leader. It felt like they were getting guilt tripped, like Microsoft was making a fuss about it because it was easy PR.

But this? This is absolutely ridiculous. Just logging into your epic account on a PS4 automatically locks you to PS4. You can't play with that account on any other platform. Doesn't matter if you spent good money on your account on other platforms, you get 100% locked into PS4 just by logging in. That's insane. It's the most anti-consumer practice in this industry since Xbox One's debut. Unbelievable.

Sony is so anti-gamer with this, no cross-play, no name changes, can't cancel a pre-order, etc...

This is some shit to see unravel. The funky part is that Sony has known about this issue for weeks now, and still refuse to budge on the issue. Shameful.

Yes, but it shouldn't PERMANENTLY LOCK YOU OUT of those consoles even if you unlink it from PSN!
I was only stating the policy Sony seems to have. The profile not crossing over to another console might legally violate this policy. Sony don't see PC and mobile as a direct competitor since they allow them, unlike Xbox and Switch.

That's cross play, the thing everyone talking about in here is cross progression

People want to pay once on whatever platform of their choice and said stuff carries over from platform to platform
Your Epic Account follows you to anything it has access to to play that game and your goodies come along too

Gonna take a few days on why Sony and Epic have this weird setup for whatever purpose, that craters the account to one platform, while others let the account just flow between them

No platform holder hosts any servers for any game other than their own. PS Plus, Xbox Live Gold and the upcoming paid Switch Online are purely profit for the platform holders, they are not involved in hosting the games they're paywalling.
I thought it's common sense but somehow I have the impressions that lots of people still believe that platform holders are hosting the server.

We could just stop playing Fortnite on PS4 until Sony gives in and allows cross play...

And that Kaz tweet. Wow.

So i created a new epic account, and bought a new battle pass. I should be able to link this new account to my iPhone version now right?

also, fuck sony for this.
Yes. I also made a new account and bought the battle pass. Even tho I bought the 60euro version last year for STW. That mode is dead anyway.

Fuck Sony.

Market leader gonna market leader? Idk this time it seems a bit much on Sony's end though. Let's see if they address it before we freak out.

Question: Is it wise for me to use an Epic Account if I'm playing this game for the very first time? I've never played Fortnite before. What's the downside of NOT creating one?

Was this ever in the game's TOS before? if so, it should've been emphasized with a dialog box before clicking "Accept". It's a dirty, greedy move by Sony to sneak that kind of bullshit in there.

So which movie has a scene that contains prisoners desperately trying to get out of some place. Or maybe the Berlin Wall? In the GIF the prisoners are the accounts while Sony keeps guard. See that Fortnite account running through the searchlight? Get it!! ;)

If you don't create one it automatically creates one for you--there's no way around having it; it's either something you purposefully create or something the game creates so that you can "save" your game. All of your progress is tied to the Epic account and you won't be able to share progress/items with other consoles.

Ah, okay. It was asking me so that's why I asked. And I thought your progreas/items *we're* shared between consoles/platforms except the PS4.

People should have been this up in arms when they did it with Xbox and it might have already been fixed.

Even as someone who this doesn't really directly affect (I downloaded it on Switch for giggles but had zero intention of playing it seriously) this is ticking me off the more time passes. It doesn't help that Epic takes at least a bit of the blame here by this not being mentioned anywhere upfront by them; seeing posts on reddit from folks who have never even DOWNLOADED Fortnite on PS4 but played Paragon or Unreal and are also affected by this. It's fucking wild. I don't even feel good about playing it on PS4 right now, I got on when I usually do but I'm just bummed out and got off almost immediately. Not giving Epic or Sony any money until we get some sort of statement from Epic at the very least (regarding the no heads up/unlinking thing). I was looking forward to getting the Starter Pack 2 as well :/

Lol Mana Byte defending Sony.

Not surprising.

So you haven't read this thread, what you actually linked, or mana's posts in this thread, got it

To be honest I don't play Fortnite so this situation doesn't involve me, however I feel it's worth mentioning how another cross platform game, Phantasy Star Online 2, handles this same sort of situation as a point of reference (since it has PC, Vita, PS4 and Switch versions). In PSO2 Switch owners can't play in the same blocks as PS4/PSV players however they can use their same account and characters, once your PSN account is linked to your PSO2 account it can't normally be unlinked, however customer services will do so for you if you contact them. So basically, if Sony have actually put restrictions in place that led to this situation then they are hand waving them for Sega but not Epic.

Yeesh, Sony has really been going in the wrong direction lately and Xbox has been going in the right.

Sure Sony has great games and all but they are really starting to lose me with things like this.

Xbox has started winning me over lately, even though I have never really been a big fan, but this makes Sony look bad...

I just dont understand why Sony do this. The damage outweights the benefits by far. If theres any, actually.
Anyway, I think Epic has some responsability here. It would clearly show to multiplatorm users about this loud and clear, like a big info modal before attempting to use Fortnite on PS4, and its consequences.

This is far, far more insidious than a lot even realise. It's literally locking you from your own content. Something you own.

Hot take: I have as much of a problem with this than I did with the original Xbox One vision. Both are trash, but MS corrected their shit impressively fast. I don't ever see Sony doing the same unless the media joins in.

Keep pushing it Sony. Been a mainly PS gamer since I got a PS1 for my 4th birthday. But you can't ride on good 2013 PR for much longer. Where it's going to count for the PS5/Nextbox is approaching the turn of the generation, and in that regard, Microsoft is wiping the floor with you, as they have been for a good amount of time now.

Keep it up and I won't consider the PS5 no matter what games you trot out

Sad to say it, but I agree with you. I've been a longtime fan of Sony's systems and games, too. This is really unbelievable. I truly hope Sony shifts their policy in a favorable position pronto, because they're looking absolutely diabolical in gamers' eyes right now.

This is the last opportunity for us and press to change this. Minecraft was big, but even journalists and reviewers play Fortnite every day. There won't be any other game that is as huge as this.

If we won't be loud and clear about this, the battle is lost forever.

I've been hoping that the media would hammer Sony hard on these types of issues (cross-platform play, backward compatibility, etc.) for the last two years, but it never happens. The problem is that many journalists get their games and add-ons for free, so they don't have the same type of attachment (emotionally, mentally, or financially) that most ordinary gamers have. I'd love to be proven wrong here, and see some real hard-hitting questions posed to Sony executives.
