smash is cool and everything, but it's a wiiu port ffs. what is nintendo doing?

You're insane if you think they were going to make a new Smash game from the ground up and start from scratch, after all the work they did on the Wii U version.

From a business perspective, it makes way more sense to do what they're doing. The Wii U bombed. Smash 4 is a great game both in visuals and content. It makes perfect sense to basically do a super duper enhanced port, with upgraded character models, stages and UI.

They went the extra mile by putting EVERY character in the game, most of which of have brand new models entirely. Plus a ridiculous amount of stages and changes to character move sets. This is above and beyond what expected.

The amount of work involved, hell, it's basically a "new" game. What difference does it really make though? Smash is Smash. The game looks amazing and will be fun.

Pretty great Direct all things considered. Lacking in terms of announcements, and it sucks that 2018 looks absolutely abysmal now, but at least 2019 looks promising.

yeah, 6/10 seems correct. All in all the direct was fine. I think fine is the keyword here, not bad nor good... just fine.

Mario Party.
Dark Souls.
Wolfestein 2.
Fortnite.
Paladins.
Daemon X.
FE.
XC2 DLC.
Hollow Knight.
StarLink.
Pokemon.
Octopath.
Mario Tennis.

Even if you already knew about this game's existence, they are all still coming. The year is full of fun experiences. And I'm surely forgetting more games. Come on.

That list is sad. Some good games, sure, but not what I want to see from Nintendo at E3. But there's Mario Party, yay.

Hoping they held back a bunch of stuff for the 3 days of Treehouse like last year.

To be honest, al I need to be happy is Waverace. :(
They tend to hold some things for tree house (I remember some announcements from previous years being treehouse only).
But hey things role like clockwork here some old place, so I'm not surprised on the reactions.

The conference could have been better, but either way I tend to wait till post tree house before going "Nintendo DOOMED!!!".

So, they tell you it's going to be focused on 2018 games, including a big focus on their major 2018 title in Smash Bros, they deliver in said promise, and people are still mad? I guess theres just no pleasing some people.

There's a difference between a focus and information overload.

They already have the invitational, they could have focused on it during the treehouse, instead they wasted the time when everyone was focused intently on minutiae of a game that most fans don't care about.

It was okay. Better than Sony, worse than MS. I guess LRG won E3.

I feel like so many games were just missing though. Even things we know about like Yoshi, RR8, Konami's adventure game, Travis Strikes Back, Disgaea R, Orochi 4, Vesperia, etc. Guess a lot of those will be drip fed through Treehouse.
Sony's beat this by miles. At least it focused on 4 awesome looking games. This was Smash, some DLC and an Indy reel.

I feel like I took a wrong path in life, because I never really got into Smash. I want to be as excited as everyone else but I'm coming up empty.

Is this gonna be Smash only or are the reveals over?

This is to dramatic, I don't even know what is smash other than a fighting game. (I Never had a Nintendo).
There is to much games to be excited in every platforms.

PS
I will try to see the Nintendo conference and try to understand the hype from smash.

Before this, I had no idea that so many people who watch a Nintendo Direct don't play Smash.
the comments in this thread are fascinating. I don't play Smash at all, but that trailer got me hype. I watched the entire Sakurai presentation in amazement of how much work they put into this game. Again, I'll go on record as that Street Fighter guy who NEVER got into SMASH. They did a great job convincing me to give that game a shot.

Regarding Nintendo's Direct failing, I'm equally mystified at this reaction. This direct literally had something for everyone in a very compact amount of time. I couldn't care less about ANY game they showed in the first half, but it was still cool to see how they served all of their audiences. I'd already seen (and drooled) at Starlink from the Ubi presser, but it was really awesome seeing release dates for so many games that I was looking forward to in the future.

But the number of 'Available Now' games were showstoppers. Paladins, Fortnite, Hollow Knight? Right now? For a second, I held my breath thinking that Smash Ultimate would follow, too!

No matter what, Nintendo had an incredible direct. I'm trying my best to see what messaging a switch owner could even WANT at this point. Indie games were abundant, 3rd party support was there (or covered in other pressers)...looking at Switch year 2 objectively (and not with the manic ravenous and insatiable appetite of the vocal minority), Nintendo has had an amazing year and it looks like it's about to get even better. I certainly just purchased Paladins, I"m watching the clock for Fortnite, and I'm going to get Captain Toad and probably Smash. Hat's off to Nintendo. I'm stingy with my money, but they've sold me on feeling good about my hardware investment!

So this will be a pretty barren 2018. Oh well, time to clear out the backlog.

No Retro game, no SQEX surprises, no Konami, no GTAV. Nothing. Wow.

If you can't focus on developing your own games, then go third party.

Yep, this is absolutely pathetic. Completely pathetic. You guys were told directly what to expect, and they did have more, and you all are now screaming for the death of the company because you are way too attached to a children's entertainment system.

As someone who does not give the slightest fuck about Smash, I still think there are more cool games coming out for the 3ds than the switch. Which is a bummer because I HATE the 3ds hardware (have since day 1) and already gave away my 3ds because I simply don't want to use that hardware anymore.

I'm sure some awesome not shown indies will come out though.

What a bummer.

i'd really like to see mother 3 and i'd really like to start seeing some wii u ports and first party remasters/re-releases but otherwise i was happy about this

i am legitimately very excited to finally plow all the way through hollow knight and i'm hype for octopath and dark souls remastered coming up

i'm fine to wait until december for major announcements about the 2019 lineup given that there are so many games left to come out this year that i actually want to play

I thought this was pretty good. It wasn't going to be mind blowing. They rarely if ever are. They showed a LOT and went into detail on a number of games. My fear the wrong things would attention and that wasn't the case here. They said they were focusing on 2018 games but we did get a 2019 game announcement. Everything else is coming this year. Bayonetta 3 and Metroid Prime 4 were just announced. They're likely still 2019 games but E3 isn't over yet and we might still get a look at them. Nintendo does spread things out with Treehouse and have for years now.

They usually do.

Yeah, the Samus Returns announcement came out of nowhere last year. I am just super disappointed right now as someone who does not care about Smash and loves FE.

And your point is? They need to save stuff for the directs, they decided not to go all out on E3 (even though there's more days left for them to announce stuff), and they even said that the direct would be smash focused beforehand. Sony could have shown more games, Microsoft could have had more exclusives. It doesn't matter at the end of the day.
Why are you defending it so hard?

I don't get how people can just eat up yet another Smash that barely deviates from the Melee formula. Remember how fresh those first two Smash games were? And now Smash is New Super Mario Bros levels of conservative.

They could do so much more with all these characters.

Yeah, that was exactly as disappointing as I was afraid of. Smash, only Smash. Way too much information about Smash, in fact. They literally have nothing else to show. Only a game that looks exactly like the last one, but has more characters I guess.

No Metroid. No F-Zero. No Starfox. No Mario Maker (wtf, why aren't you making a Switch version of this?!). No Odyssey DLC. No Galaxy remake.

Only Smash now.
No Retro. No Bayonetta.
