And thinking about it, this is another concern for Game Pass. If every major publisher decides to create their own subscription services, what does that leave for Microsoft?

The occasional first party title, and mid-tier and indie games? That could make the service less compelling with fewer heavy hitters.

Eh, I'd argue only EA and Ubisoft could sustain their own services, and neither of them are on Game Pass anyway to my knowledge.

To phrase it another way, which games on Game Pass could get yanked because their publisher could sustain a subscription service?

In the trailer there was a woman playing FIFA on mobile with a phone controller case. Does that imply that you'll be able to stream games to your phone eventually with this?

Delaying game releases for other people is dumb.
The value of an annual subscription is decided by how much you reckon the new games lineup is worth. It's worded open-endedly, but I'd assume the ones mentioned will be all of the new games available for Premier users in the first year.
Think I'm more likely to go for the one month rental on occasion. I'd do that for something like UFC 3, the kind of game I'm somewhat interested in, but not enough to buy at full price. I'll maybe do it for Anthem.
This system is so amazing to me, it's like renting games but for the internet age. Back in the day, at the tail end of Blockbuster, it'd be about 10 bucks to rent one game for a week. 15 bucks for a month's access to their whole library and day 1 releases is pretty sweet and perfect for me as I don't like buying games until they're cheaper, so I'm always late to everything. Now I can get in on those first few weeks of BF5 for 15 bucks and move on, plus beat some other game like Unravel 2 if I feel like it. Would love to see more publishers do this kind of thing.
Yeah it's pretty good. I've missed rentals. And these have more value and convenience.

edit
It won't be their whole library though. The games in the vault, plus the specific "new games" mentioned.

The main thing EA has going for them with this is the fact that the majority of their games are on a yearly cycle, the older annual games tend to completely lose any value in the second year since most people stop playing them. If you're someone who regularly buys Fifa every year for example then you're not going to miss owning it outright.

Which makes their games going digital or subscription based not much of a burden because the resell value for their physical annual games are the complete opposite of Nintendo titles.

Consumers buy a Xbox or a Playstation for the library, not necessarily just for first party. They want to play Call of Duty and big AAA third party games on those consoles. Nintendo on the other hand can and will continue to be able to survive without them. If those big publishers ever decided to go their own way it would hurt them but as of right now they need each other.

The hardware makers see value in timed exclusive deals so of course EA will try and utilize Origin in the same enticing manner. I don't know if I will go for the annual model either, right now I can think of maybe 3 or 4 games that I would want to play per year of theirs.

This is what I wanted you to clarify, what do you mean "go their own way"? What ideas did you have in mind? Not releasing their game on +120 million selling platforms?

Big movie stars have made Netflix Originals with no theatrical release, so in theory one day we could see that happening with games. Subscription models are the future. Maybe not in the near but who knows in 8 years or 18 years from now.

That analogy doesn't work, theater subscription services is one that does work, but they're still subs for watching movies in theater, same story with consoles, they're subs that have to run on consoles. Blockbuster movies need theatrical releases, blockbuster games need consoles to survive. There is no way in hell they would drop a +120M install base so I really wonder what your idea is of "cutting the middle men".

I think second screen and remote activity is something companies and players are sleeping on. I genuinely think, if companies can get a device like the Oculus go to a high enough fidelity and either streaming with low enough compression/lag. Or just simply connect locally to a device with cable or better local high speed networks for transmission. We could see VR headset picked up for none other than remote/viewing play in a high quality headset. The controller/view could also be used to play some PC games with a virtual mouse. Or controller for others.

I know a tangent, but it's something I miss about the Vita and I think can be taken further.

So is this a subscription where you download the game like the normal Origin Access, or is it streaming only?

Why would I need a console if I can just use an Apple TV type of device in the future? I am speaking in the future once they figure out cloud technology. I don't need to be burdened by the ceiling limits of a consoles limitations if they can get the infrastructure in place. Once we get there 120 million would seem like nothing.

Now back to Origin Premiere. I don't need to pay Microsoft or Sony to have online access so already they are cutting out the middle man for me since I do not play on consoles. EA is also ignoring the hundred million Steam users right now. You are right, they are not going to ignore the console gamers right now, the technology isn't in place yet as seen by the limitations of PlayStation Now and still a substantial consumer base who wants physical games. I am merely speculating that one day if these subscription based models take off and more and more publishers go this way that Sony and Microsoft better watch out since they are VERY reliant on third party support.

No, the Switch has totally spoiled me on being able to drag my games around the house, even if the GF is watching television in the same room. I really want remote streaming to go more mainstream. I've tried to Mickey Mouse the PS4 remote app onto my non-Xperia phone with no luck.

99 dollars a year but probably can get it half off with ebay discounts and coupons just like with game pass. Hope ea access premier is announced.

If this happens this will be the reason to get a xboxX for me. I buy fifa and battlefield day 1 every year so having an ea gamepass would be already cheaper if you get 2 EA games a year. + all the other games in their vault.

I hope Sony gets their shit together and works with EA but if not then xbox x for multiplats it is for me. My ps4 pro will be for exclusives or depending on better sales for a multiplat game.

Microsoft tomorrow is the day to get a new customer ^^ gonna use my old xbox360 account

I wish Sony didn't stop supporting remote play on other devices. I would have loved to have been able to play something like Persona 5 on my tablet. I'd definitely have been finished with the game by now if I could have. I'm still chipping away at it in little chunks between other games. But it's a really conducive title to remote/handheld play.

Anyway, this is excellent, I hope publishers like Ubisoft and Square Enix would do something similar, I'd say Sony too but that would be a fool's wish.

For this to be worth it, EA only needs to release two $60 games per year that a subscriber would be interested in playing. That shouldn't be too hard a hill to climb. Great value.

I'm pretty sure this is PC only. That's why it's original premier not ea access premier. It's not a Sony or MS thing. Unless you're anticipating MS announcing EA access premier at their conference but I don't see that happening. Idk why.

Unless I missed something...

Either way. This was actually the best announcement for me. I'm definitely in.

$100 a year would be a steal a few years ago when EA's output was much stronger. Now it's just ok I think.

Well I actually feel it makes a lot of sense considering EA will have a presence tomorrow with Battlefield V... Why don't you think it's happening?

Yes i hope MS or sony announce ea access premier on their console. Why wouldnt it be on xbox? The normal ea access already is. I really hope its on one of these consoles.

Isn't EA Access $30 (cad) for the year? An additional $90 to have access to a few extra games on PC seems like quite the price jump.

I have no idea. Lol. Just seems weird not announce them together but I guess that's just how they do business. Always letting MS save the best news and trailer for their conference.

But yeah, it makes no sense to not bring it to consoles.

So like previously (except for the 10 hour bit), you get the new games up until release date right

Origin already offered the best editions of each game (except for BF1), and early access. This is a massive price hike, probably meant to depreciate the normal Origin Acess.

I think you're misunderstanding the differences in the services.

No, you have them for as long as you're subbed.

Early access if you bought the game, or a trial if you didn't. This is full (i.e. no trials) early access to all new EA games, no purchase required.

Oh shit, sounds like I might do it then. Unless the Canadian pricing is so fucked, then I might not bother. But still worth it I guess, considering that I'm interested in BFV, Anthem to an extent, and uhh....dat madden for like a day or two.

As a reminder this is NOT a streaming service. You create an account and pay 5 bucks a month to access their "vault" games, which currently include the likes of FIFA 17, battlefront 1, titanfall 1 and 2, plus lots of other games. You download the games in their entirety to your pc and play them, just like steam games, except you need an active account to play. I think it's worth it.

Origin Access takes a good 6-12 months to put games into the vault, if you're fine with waiting then Origin Access is more than great for you, but lots of people (including me) are willing to dish out an extra $70 to play day one.

Mt. Whatever
At first hearing it I was tempted.

On contemplation, I think there are only a handful of EA titles I'm looking forward to and it's probably just easier to buy them outright. (BFV, big maybe on Anthem.)

What does the best edition of games mean? Does it mean like we'd be getting the "hall of fame" etc editions?

This is interesting, I think I'll jump in. This is also likely to make me try out games that I otherwise would never spend the money on, like first person shooters and yearly sports games. Man, fuck, they got me haha.

Yeah, I will jump in if it is 10-15 a month.
Play a few matches then never play them again is usually how I play EA games.

I wonder if this will finally be a way to play the entire Mass Effect Trilogy with all the DLC at a reasonable price.

Wonder how many, if any at all, Sims 4 expansion packs will be on this service. The base game is on the current Origin Access but none of the expansions or packs.

So essentially if you're going to buy more than two brand new EA titles per year, you should really buy this pass thing instead.

Anthem, FIFA 19, Mdden 19, any Battlefield game, any Need For Speed game, are purchases I'd make.

Seems like a no brainer.
