Via Vox's Today Explained Podcast:
There are three things you need to know about George Soros:

1) You're pronouncing his name wrong.

2) He's richer than rich.

3) He's one of the most hated people in the world.

Roseanne tweeted that the Holocaust survivor was a Nazi on Tuesday, and Hungary is currently trying to pass legislation that would ban him. Foreign Policy's Emily Tamkin explains how the financier-philanthropist came to have so many haters even though he gives away his money to the poor.

Of course it would start with authoritarian jerks using someone trying to do good as a bogeyman to scare the masses into keeping themselves in power.

Also Today Explained is a really good (and short) daily podcast from Vox hosted by Sean Rameswaram (formerly of Radiolab and More Perfect) that I'd really recommend if you want a quick yet detailed explainer of the day's hot topic.

It was the guy who tried to destroy the UK bank during the 1990's by destroying their currency, right?

Isn't that the whole reason? The fuck you got mine scumbags hate it when people get stuff for free because "they worked hard" and also bootstraps!

Same reason they worship scum like Trump and hate refugees or immigrants looking for a better life.

Ever read 1984? Pointless, illogical hate needs a random target to focus on. It's funny how some people are using the book as a manual on how to achieve fascism rather than as a warning example.

Coincidence?

I do not think so.

He's seen by many as a meddler, who has the power and money to influence politics and policy in countries around the world via a multitude of NGOs. The accusations of meddling or interference usually revolve around his strong support for immigration which brings him into sharp conflict with people like Victor Orban,

He has a pro open borders agenda and has spent a lot of money on the Democratic party to see his goal realised. He also spends a lot on advancing progressive causes which some people on the other side don't like.

But yeah, open borders is the main reason.

He embodies the "rich Jew who totally for realsy secretly controls the world" stereotype that dominated the twentieth century. Only now, hateful bigots are much more subtle with their messaging around him. Plausible deniability is a hell of a drug.

Anti Semitism. It's why the ellipses started being used by Jewish and sympathetic usernames as a counterprotest and owning of the symbol.

In modern context, read Twitter and conspiracy.

He contributed to the crash of the Swedish krona and our banking crisis in the early 90:s leading to Sweden's biggest recession since ww2. Not a good way to get popular.

He wasn't alone in doing this of course so there's probably antisemitic reasons as well.

They needed a rich Jewish boogyman to run their conspiracy theories. Since Soros contributes money to democrats it all sort of falls into place.

Quite honestly I think a lot of it is just straight up anti-Semitism. The conspiracy theories surrounding him are beyond absurd

Pretty much. He's rich, influential, and Jewish, which makes for a good scapegoat for those who want to control the "economically anxious".

Don't know anything about him but google tells me that he's recently been spending big money to sway which DAs get appointed. Didn't go well but that would have given him quite a pull.

I understand why (philanthropist rich Jewish). What I don't understand is how can you make an entire election campaign based on "STOP SOROS" like Orban did on Hungary.

I despise all the conspiracy theories and their antisemitic undertones, but there's a fair criticism to be made about the philanthropic part IMO, in the sense that working conditions at Amazon warehouses don't look too hot, so before giving money away, try to treat your employees better.

That's not what 99% of the criticisms I see are about, though.
What are you talking about?

I don't jump in with the conspiracy folk but at the same time I understand some of the hate. I mean why do people hate Koch brothers? I think it's legit to dislike billionaires who buy politicians, left or right. Not to mention, I doubt there are any "clean" billionaires, their billions weren't made without bending the rules.

The Russian agitprop campaign that's been running in Eastern Europe for several years now (see Hungary, Poland, recently Romania) is using him as the archetypal "shady, rich, manipulative Jew" for their slogans. Now, normally, Israel would've retaliated against this BS, were it not for the minor detail that George Soros is low-key against Netanyahu and his clique. So, the often vehement protection Israel extends to high-profile Jewish figures doesn't cover him.

People forget he is also a convenient scapegoat to distract from right wing political meddlers like the Kochs who actually are fucking things up on a regular basis.

It's easier to attack the amoebic, nebulous thing that is 'liberalism' when you invent a straw-leader. That he's Jewish helps sell the lie. That his surname is 5 letters long, and a palindrome makes it easily memetic.

Yeah besides the anti-semitism and propaganda it's the usual right wing projection.

Koch brothers fuck around using their money too.

Good summation. The right wing thrives on concrete beliefs of villainy and Soros' absurd wealth and activism makes him the easiest target.

Politics, mainly. He's a major financial backer of the Dem party.

Reason enough for most GOP voters to hate the guy. Same as with the Koch Bros funding GOP candidates.

Because he interferes with foreign politics?

That's an excellent reason to be very critical of George Soros. A US investor has no business meddling with UK or Hungarian politics IMO.

BTW How come FireFirstAce got banned for saying this: "Don't know anything about him but google tells me that he's recently been spending big money to sway which DAs get appointed. Didn't go well but that would have given him quite a pull."

When I search Google News for George Soros, there's a link to an LA Times article with this headline: "Big spending by George Soros and liberal groups fails to sway D.A. races in California". How can that be conspiratorial rhetoric?

Not to say there aren't legitimate, valid criticisms of Soros (there are, like with any mega-rich capitalist figure), but the primary reason the far right focuses so much time and attention against him is because he's useful to them as an antisemitic dogwhistle. He can play the role of the rich evil Jew pulling the strings behind "progressive" causes in their deranged conspiracy mindset so the people attacking him don't have to openly say that they hate Jews. They can throw out the Soros bogeyman and their supporters get the idea.

Typical right-wing conspiracy attempt. Soros spends money on liberal efforts, which is, according to conspiracy freaks, is the same as trying to appoint DAs to 'get some pull'". It's not, and you're being obvious. Anyone not of his religios/racial origins wouldn't get people to write it like that. It'd be "X donates to Y cause" which is....fairly normal.
