This is where I'm at now with God of War. The game looks incredible on my PS4 with HDR and it does feel quite good but a lot of it is very much the same thing over and over. Because of how good it looks and feels it's driving me to pick at it one step at a time.

I think the same could be said for me with Ultra Sun. I love how great the game looks and feels on the 3DS but it's probably the worst Pokemon game I've ever played so I haven't beat it yet. But I will!

The Last Guardian, not only does it look great but the story, world and overall atmosphere is incredible. All the game parts of it are terrible and were incredibly frustrating til the end.

This was my answer too. I didn't play it to the end, but I kept going longer than I 'wanted' to, cos I was so enamoured with the creature and the world. As a game though it kinda sucked.

There were other aspects of the game I did like and also the game doesn't even open up until like 35+ hours in.
But were those other aspects worth it at all? I mean, you could've put that 95 hours to several games you likely would've enjoyed far more

I played Final Fantasy XV for over 130 hours and think little of the game at all, so I've been there.
Jesus! Well I suppose I can't relate too much to that. For me, if I don't like the game at all, I'll drop it after 10 hours or so, unless I really have nothing else to do

El Shaddai. I wouldnt actually say it was terrible, but im still not actually sure wtf was going on with the gameplay. It was really offputting at times, and felt extremely underbaked. I keep it in my collection though, and will definitely go through it again at somepoint. Damn interesting experience.

Gonna echo this one.

El-Shaddai is gorgeous, the combat however is extremely repetitive and boring. Along with all the weird platforming levels make this game just an odd experience, though a very very pretty one.

"Terrible" is way too strong for my answer but I would say I finished Uncharted 4 solely due to the graphics and nothing else. Everything else about that game was bland and stale.

P.N.03, back then it was considered pretty impressive graphically (minus the actual level design since everything was white and bland as fuck.) The game play itself got pretty old fast, but I was determine to beat the game.

Ni No Kuni 1&2: God I wanted to love those games so bad but they just are not fun

Horizon: Gorgeous game but everything else was a 5/10

The Last of Us: Same as Horizon plus I didn't find the story as compelling as people tried to tell me it was.

Horizon Zero Dawn - Although it wasn't terrible I found it very shallow and boring and was skipping cutscenes after only a couple of hours yet somehow I understood the main story and character's motivations perfectly, I think maybe the game did a good job of setting up the frame of the story in the beginning.

To date this is the best looking game I've ever played and also some of the best sound design I've heard (nice transformers like sound effects and a great LFE track). I played on PS4 Pro, oled and 7.1.

Trine 2's game design is pretty bland, but it's absolutely gorgeous to the point that moving through the levels is rewarding based on aesthetics alone.

I'd never play through a game just because it's pretty, I'm kind of shocked at how many in here would

Everybody's Gone to the Rapture. The game is very pretty, but the game was so slow that it bored me to death. Fortunately the game is not very long or I would've given up.

I can't say I've done that before, no. I have played through games that turned out to be bad for longer than I would have because of achievements, but that was back when those were a novelty.

I wouldn't call GTA4 a bad game - it's not. It's a very good game actually, from what I've seen and from what other people enjoy in it. But it's also just not the game for me. It wasn't fun for me at all. Still, I kept playing it out of sheer technological admiration. I was like "Wow, this is really impressive. I guess I have to play it."

I guess nobody read the "terrible" part of the thread title, BotW, God of War... yep terrible games.

My answer is Gungrave, it was incredibly repetitive and simple game, but I loved the anime aesthetic back then.

Can't say I've ever done that. Star Fox is the closest example I can think of, but I kinda like Star Fox.

I don't think I've ever done this, hmm... Probably the closest was when I rented Star Fox back in the day, excited for the 3D graphics and all... But thought it looked like shit, and coupled with that awful performance it got on my nerves and I dropped it pretty quickly lok.

this is why the thread should have said "games you hated" instead of "terrible games" because Odyssey being terrible is pretty out there
Yeah but how do you remove "bias" from what a "terrible" game is, it's all perspective based.

It's like people saying God of War or BoTW are terrible games, they are amazing to a lot of people but to certain others they are just outright shit.

I hate mario kart now too, something I loved back in the N64 days.

its more an issue with hyperbole but I get the inference well enough that it probably wasnt worth bringing up

It was known at the time as pushing Wii tech to a decent degree, and there was quite a bit of excitement for it before release. It was also hot garbage. But I finished it.

Also, while I wouldn't quite call it terrible, it was definitely not good:

The Order 1886. It's a mixed bag of gameplay ideas and doesn't stick with them, just gives and takes. The graphics are really great. That shit stealth section at the end though.....good graphics can't make up for that.

I'd also toss vanilla Destiny in there. I enjoyed the shooting and graphics might be one of the best this gen, but I was always being dragged by my friends to play it and it really got boring and found the raids frustrating. I was done at 100 hours once the Crota dlc patched in. Meanwhile, my group put in about 800 hours without me. I can't imagine playing that much Destiny. It was a game I played so much of yet can't tell you as to why other than graphics and friends.

If a game is terrible, no graphical achievements are going to push me to finish it.

As far as a game I didn't enjoy, but was so mesmerized by the tech on display that I pushed through to the end, that'd be Uncharted 4. It just wasn't for me, but my god was it a beautiful game.

The Lost Legacy though. Loved that one.

Last one would be The Order: 1886, thankfully not on a copy I bought. Not that long of a game, very pretty, but nothing when it came to gameplay was enjoyable for me. Just a completely mediocre cover shooter with little to no creativity when it came to weapons or enemies. Poor level design across the board, too much forced slow walking, and repeating QTE boss fights ruined the cool looking werewolves.

These posts make no sense to me. Half of them are "well it's not terrible but...". Then why post it? The thread is asking for legitimately terrible games that you played for the visuals (if ever), not pretty games that turned out bland to you.

The other posts make me wonder what the word "terrible" actually means to you. Like, Sonic 06 is a legitimately terrible game. It's buggy, falling apart at the seams, controls poorly and is an overall shoddy product, that had visuals (at the time) that could be considered pretty good. That's a match for this thread. You're putting Horizon in the terrible category, next to 06 or some shitty tie-in game or something?

boring (to you) =/= terrible

Because the question the thread is asking is ridiculous and no sane person would play through a terrible game until the end. Usually if a game is terrible in the gameplay department then the devs haven't really put a lot of care into it in the first place and I doubt it's going to look special either. Horizon is a game that fits the description in my mind, because this was a game that I wasn't impressed with, (bored with actually) but I specifically remember slugging through because of how gorgeous it was.

So my response is still fitting in with the spirit of the thread.

I came in expecting to see the following games:

Horizon Zero Dawn
Uncharted 4 A Thief's End
God of War (PS4)

This thread did not disappoint.

Seriously though, I finished Alan Wake for the visuals only. The story isn't good. The gameplay (loop whatever) is just not fun after two hours of playing. I had more fun playing The Order 1886 than this.

Horizon for sure, one of the most overrated games in this generation but it does look good enough to play it for that reason, and the gameplay is serviceable which is nice I guess, it's no Ryse at least.

Hoping they get better writers in the sequel and change the protagonist.
Not overrated at all it's just your opinion... it's praised for a reason and I don't get how people can use that word like they are talking for everyone else. Obviously every game will have its haters.. Hence why God of War has already been mentioned.. but the vast majority is what determines if a game is critically acclaimed

I don't see how a game can be "terrible" and yet you will through it and it's not your job. I can see that for a game that's "ok" or even "not good" but not terrible. That's like, I don't get it. Idk I'm out of the loop.
Yeah, that's me as well. There are a number of games I found so-so which I may not have completed if they weren't looking so good (I dunno, Uncharted 2 comes to mind, but there are probably a lot of other examples). But those games were far from awful. If they were I wouldn't have completed them in the first place. They were just "meh", with their main (dare I say only) appeal was their aesthetic.

Hell there is a prime example of this in Final Fantasy 13. The game looked and sounded amazing. Yet it was so bad I couldn't finish it (and yes I got to Pulse, and it didn't get better, quite the contrary).

I've never played through a game just for the graphics. In fact, I even enjoyed divisive games like The Order: 1886 and Everybody's Gone to the Rapture despite of their flaws. I've willed through a game just because of the lore though, and being part of a series I loved, namely Blood Omen 2. Boy, that was an awful experience.
