I wouldn't call the criticism I've seen "constructive" between Spyro and Crash.

Then you've been covering your eyes. There has been a lot of effort put into carefully explaining the criticisms of the color palette changes, with supporting visual edits to give an idea of what the fans were hoping for, so that they can improve the look of the game in respect to those wants, which they've done (and it looks incredible). But that's not constructive because...?

It makes assumptions about the aim of the project that may or may not be true.

As an example, I showed the comparison image that LadyBow posted above to a group of friends, and everyone who hadn't played Spyro before preferred the April 5th art over June 1st version, even though the new art is unarguably truer to the old colors. So you have a dichotomy where some people prefer it one way and some people prefer it the other, and how can defending personal taste be constructive?

Holy shit, the game's looking amazing. I wasn't that excited about it before, but seeing all these environments and concept art's definitely changing that.

I can't believe they actually fucking nailed it. Holy shit they actually nailed every single little thing. I hated what they did with the crash one, but this looks fucking amazing. I'm actually pre-ordering it right now!

The music having bass, the crispness of the gems and things searing after being burned, the movement is beyond fluid...wow

I think it looks perfect, wow. I'm so glad they are actually making this and I hope we'll see more of it at E3.

Counterpoint, this is why constructive criticism is useful. Who knows if they'd have bothered to change it if there weren't a lot of vocal fans who asked.

I agree constructive criticism is always helpful, but a lot of people had the reaction of "waahh, it's different, lazy devs, they're ruining my childhood".

How does everyone think this will do sales-wise? Will it reach N. Sane levels or not?

I really hope it does become successful enough for new games, and for other publishers/devs to be convinced these older IPs aren't dead yet.

Crash is the commercially superior IP.

Spyro will sell just fine, but even with two platforms the Crash sales on PS4 alone will be hard to eclipse. I'm hoping it gets attention at the Playstation or Xbox conferences.

I know Crash is the more well-recognised series but these past few months I've seen word of mouth be a huge determiner of sales, and so far the Spyro trilogy looks more true to the originals and has more of a benefit of being upgraded that Crash did (camera controls, general PS1 clunkiness etc.).

I don't think it'll reach N.Sane levels. I feel like there are fewer people who have played any or all 3 Spyro games so curiosity will definitely be an initial benefit to it, but I fear without some drivel like "tHe DaRk SoULs oF pLaTfOmErS" to latch on to, not being the first big remake like this, and being a pretty chill, casual experience it may not get the power of word of mouth that N.Sane garnered. Its platform spread may also hurt it a bit since Crash eventually made it to other consoles so PC/Switch people may wait it out.

Still, I think it will definitely end up successful. Even if Crash is more recognizable and successful Spyro fills a different and relatively more empty niche at the moment, which on top of its inherent qualities and good buzz will do well for it in the long run.

And considering how complimentary and joined at the hip the two franchises have always been I wonder if a proper Crash/Spyro crossover could be in the cards down the line.

I hadn't considered that dumb 'DARK SOULS!!!" thing and how it'd affected the sales. It is true Spyro doesn't have that, but maybe in its place there's the Skylanders crowd?

Only time will tell I suppose.

I don't think we'll ever get a joint crossover game, as much as I'd love one, seeing as there aren't many of those and it would cost too much compared to the DS games.

probably lower but maybe not by an awful lot.

I think Spyro has a better chance of attracting new players than Crash. I can see it being very popular with kids....again. Its a perfect game to buy for/play with your kids imo and it is at the right pricepoint to attract parents aswell

Destiny, Spryo and Spiderman.... September will be awesome

The one big change fans of the PlayStation games will see is every elder dragon has been redesigned. We had a chance to see one, which Spyro frees after exiting the art gallery. Toys for Bob wants each dragon to hammer home the theme of the world they inhabit.

Toys for Bob's artists did their best to try to get into the mind of Insomniac's artists to figure out their grand vision. Some of the stages teased the idea of ancient civilizations and magical places but ended up consisting of just two huts and a streak of magical light in the distance. Without adding any other geometry that would change the play space, Toys for Bob's design team expanded on this vision as much as possible. The environment still consists of just two huts, but they look entirely different, and are now intricately detailed to convey the sense of society and magic. It looks like a new game, but fans will find it oddly familiar.

Composer Stewart Copeland's original scores are being used, but the music is now dynamic, shifting in tone when Spyro moves from exploration to combat. It's a small change that goes a long way in heightening the moment of facing off against Toasty the scarecrow, who now has a mischievous grin, fluid animations, and can eventually be burned down to reveal he's a sheep standing on stilts.

Did we already know it runs on Unreal 4? Or is that news?

An interesting part of this article? Activision gave Spyro the greenlight before Crash even launched. Surprising, but welcome news

Not as thrilled by the dragon resdesigns yet.

Sounds like even the media hasnt seen much of Gateway to Glimmer or Year of the Dragon yet - I wonder how far along those games are. Not that much time left.

Maybe they are holding the later, better games for the Playstation E3 show?

Me and my gf still playing through Ripto's Rage, just got through a full level with it, some of those mini games are argghh but satisfying to complete still. I think we have like 60%+ right now.

Fucking Toys for Bob, really going above and beyond.

If you listen to the original, you can tell the intention was for the music track to elevate in intensity as you progressed through the stage and eventual face-off with Toasty. Of course the tech back then wouldn't allow it, and at best you just happened to synchronize with it. Not only did TfB realize this, but they actually made it a dynamic element tied to the gameplay. I'm just utterly speechless at their talent and attention to detail. This may be one of the only games I buy two copies of on different platforms out of sheer support for just nailing everything about this game.

Here's the original track:

I didn't really like the giant gnorc from dark hollow... but this is amazing

Gotta say, I will miss the unintentional creepy elements these designs used to have on the PS1. Those jagged, kooky eyes always gave me chills as a kid.

I am curious how they'll translate the enemies in Dreamweavers. they were a disturbing looking pack of dudes:

Wasn't this known since the original reveal? I distinctly remember the press copy making mention of the music being remixes of Copeland's score

Yeah, there's definitely an added layer of "I can't even fully process what I'm looking at" that makes it more disturbing. I'll be super curious to find out how these are rendered.

IIRC they said it would be remixes, yes, but didn't specify in which way it would be remixed. The dynamic layering is news to me.

I think Spyro could outsell the N-Sane Trilogy. Crash sold better on the original Playstation but Spyro has more recognition among younger gamers, especially with Skylanders' success.

God every piece of footage for this looks better than the last. And we're still only on spyro 1!

There is still so much to see and im so excited for my childhood being so lovingly re-crafted. They're the real magic-crafters.
