I hope they go out of business. No company that willfully fucks over all of their consumers deserves to be in business. I also hope they get hit with a giant class action.

- Game will meet expectations and be profitable because 500k shipped to distributors of which some have no right to return them
Why on earth would you say this publically? Good luck getting those distributors (and potentially others) to stock your future products if that is your attitude towards them.

When Big Ben announced they would show the game at Gamescom 2017 and then went radio silent, I knew there was something off about this game's development. Check out the tweets/replies on both @BigBen_Games and @BigBenInteract from August 2017. Just unprofessional and terribly handled.

The communication around this game has been off from the get go. There was a thread on the old site anticipating the announcement at last year's Gamescom and then nothing was announced.

The Big Ben publisher Twitter account even was tweeting at their sister Twitter account to provide more info. It was weird.

a week later...

Edit: messed up the Twitter embeds...

This game also happens to have a male roster of 26 ATP players....to just 5 WTA players. That's a 5 women/26 men roster split......and this was knowingly done by the team. I know mens tennis is more popular, but that's a disgrace to women. I knew something was bad with these back when that was announced, and then they proceeded to give 4 different reasons as to why that decision was made( some hilarious excuses at that).

This is incredible for me.
20% of the final game?????
It's a real fraud, a robbery.

I have the game in Xbox One version, in this moment is a disaster.
For example Federer use occasionelly two hands for the backhand.

The bottons do not respond the correct imput, argh

Expecting this to be one of the first proper bombs for a notable game on Switch. Releasing right along MT Aces as another Tennis game, and being this mediocre. Doesn't deserve much.

So who is at fault here?

The publisher Bigben Interactive, or the devs in this case?

Was this a case of the publisher pushing the devs to get the game out the door.

Looking at the history of games Bigben has, it's a ton of shovelware sounding stuff.

For some reason I'm not shocked?

This is pretty gross...but also in an odd way it's refreshing to hear the honesty. I imagine this isn't the first case of situations like this, we just generally don't hear such an honest rationale behind the hot messes.

It's important to note that any developer can say "our game is X percentage done". That isn't really a quantifiable thing.

This, pretty much. A game that is only 20% would be in some kind of prototype form with half of the features only existing on paper during pre-alpha. So people should not get too hung up on that arbitrary number, the rest of the quote is much worse anyways.

Apart from that, I seriously hope that something got lost in translation, cause no one should be crazy enough to tell press "yeah it will be a success, because the retailers can't send it back" oO

In the review I wrote a few weeks back I even said it was like buying an early access game, this pretty much confirms that. It's shocking how they released a product so unfinished and unpolished as a full priced game.

I took the 20% to mean features, like missing online, character models, animation, game modes etc

Should have been early access, would have excused so much.

Instead, they're pushing for scumminess and immediate short-term profitability. Here's hoping the market won't tolerate or reward this.

I have been receiving e-mails from B2B Traders in the industry discounting the crap out of this product. Product dropped 4-5 euro's within 1 day for B2B.
Big Ben been making deals selling with no right to return. They have done this more often, stating you will get a good deal price and overflooding the market with stock.
Traders getting shafted, Big Ben gets money. Product gets devalued, you'll be able to pick it up for 20 euro's or so within a few weeks i think due to traders dumping unsellable stock for low prices.

That Big Ben released an unfinished shitty product in combination with what i assume above tactic is just completely mind boggling garbage.
Glad I dodged that bullet.

The way this guy talks about this strategy in such a candid way is baffling, seems like this is normal. We have a barely functional game, but it's going to be profittable because retailers can't send unsold copies back. It's just business! The 20% probably refers to game modes and such, a game at 20% would have most textures and animations with placeholders and not tied together by menus but by console inputs. So there's that. Still, makes me curious about a lot of games that launched in a questionable state compared to the promises (No Man's Sky, Destiny, etc.) - what would those devs say about the percentage of completion (content-wise) they shipped the game in?

I don't see how someone in some meeting at some point in time did not see how this entire strategy could possibly poison the well and fuck over any possible momentum they could have built. I wonder why they didn't just go the Golf Club route. Early access, user creation, slow building to gain a following, and then work on licenses from there.

I'm a bit pissed off that they said it's 20% and they already focusing on their 2019 game. How about fixing the current game? Tennis game doesn't need to be a yearly thing.

Big sites need to pull them up on this shit. Surely they can't get away with this sort of behaviour.

The hilarious part is that they could have avoided half of this with different wording. "We eanted to do so much more, but such is life."

Figured as much, I bought it and played a single match since release, buggy as hell, every ball is called "Out!" by the judge, no sound, lifeless and bland looking enviroments, they didn't even voice the judge saying the player's names out loud, it's awful any way you look at it.

As a Tennis games fan, this is sad to see. There's like no decent real Tennis game this gen. No Top Spin, no Virtua Tennis and now we get this mess of an incomplete game 5 years in this generation of consoles, WTF !

At least i can look forward to Mario Tennis which is really good judging from the demo.

To be fair, it's gotten way better( and if you're a PS guy, then it's quite solid i hear).....now is just a match of lacking in content and ironing out a few minor bugs( again for the PS users).

If those translations are correct--essentially scamming retailers is not a good look, and they'll potentially face some serious ramification. I know the sellers do not want this to set precedent, and neither do the hundreds of other indi developers out there who would never use such tactics to get their game sold, and hate seeing one company harm their reputation. It could potentially sour the relationships between small devs and retail.
