I'm not sure why people expect reasonable behavior from "fans". The sole qualification to be a fan of something is to be overly invested in it.

I have no particular feelings either way about that quote. I just found it interesting that you decided to make it a primary point of contention in a thread about overzealous fans. It's quality is a nonsequitur to the premise of this thread.

I'm not justifying harassing the actress at ALL but her character was really lame and shit. Her arc lead nowhere and she stopped Finn from saving everyone because "hope". I wanted to throw my popcorn at the screen at that moment. She was a terribly written and developed character. She's up there with Jar-Jar for bad characters but blaming the actress makes no sense. It was bad writing/directing.
For fucks sake, why do people feel they have to do this to someone? Her Instagram was awesome and was great to follow, I just don't understand why people have to tear down strips off actors and actresses online - They're people just like us that are just trying to enjoy what they do for a living.

It's a shame because I don't think her character was the greatest but she gave an incredible performance that elevated fairly flat material, I think, and her excitement was so palpable. Ridley's Instagram feed was really fun too until she was forced to end it. It sucks.

Sad and depressing. It's also prevalent everywhere. I'm not sure if Gamergate-style bullshit was always there and I just didn't see it before, but now I see it everywhere and it makes my heart ache.

This fandom is really unhealthy in general. I didn't like the Last Jedi but I also didn't like any of the Transformers movie, Blade Trinity, Sucker Pumch or A Cure For Wellness. Didn't feel the need to harass the people involved over it.

That being said, I do know that harassing her as a result from that is clearly crossing the line, since yes, her fictional character is of course different from her as a real person.

So let's say the character was "her fault," whatever that means. Is it OK harass her then? Otherwise why even bring up "fault" in the first place?
I've never heard a single good reason for hating or even disliking the character. If she just didn't make an impression, okay, but nothing Rose does in the film is worthy of causing dislike for the character.
DJ on the other hand, is one of the worst SW characters in history, but almost nobody complains about him or, to my knowledge, harasses Benicio Del Toro about it.
I'm a Star Wars fan and a lot of people in my circle are too, and we are all pretty up on the Disney-owned SW films. Really don't get who these people are or where they are coming from. Mostly fans older than me probably, and likely the kind who voted for Trump.
