Huh? Horizon is basically the poster child for how to do a female protagonist and OP probably skipped on it otherwise you wouldn't have made this thread in the first place

Reading is hard lol.

But OP, why does it need to only female protagonist? Male/female choice is much better than no choice at all. That's why I love Bethesda and Bioware games. I'd love to see such games though.

I do like having the choice as well, but we do have to admit that some of the game with a choice have the lead male version being the one used in marketing and from the technical point of view the animation, the script and heck even some times the sounds effect are made for the male version as basis but used for the female as well even if it doesn't really fit.

Horizon zero down is great, however it's kinda sad that it got mentioned over and over again as well as the handful of games mentioned, it shows the number of women MCs in AAA games still remains small.

Having an equivalent ratio of male and female protagonists in AAA games would be fantastic but alas as the battlefields outrage has shown, we still have a long way to go.

Certainly if say the next GTA have a female protagonists only, the Internet will have a meltdown but it will create a nice precedent that may open a new door, a la having CJ back in San andreas.

Edit:
I guess i should elaborate. Sorry. Your specific parameters disqualify certain games. And i cant understand why you'd narrow your filter so thin. Especially games that give you the choice of both. Why does it have to be female only, if the end goal, for you to have the ability to play as a female, is achieved?

Would GTA with all female protags even count if the had support from males? What about the fact that GTA can be played in first person mode? How does TR not count, again? Saints Row? How strict is your open world definition ? Does Dino Crisis, RE3, or Parasite Eve games count?

Ok......so....what's wrong with that? I mean do we really need it?
You don't think it's odd for one sex to 100% dominate leading roles in modern AAA open world games? That doesn't seem like a curious imbalance to you given that half the human population is women and there are millions of female gamers?

Well, I think the real question is why do so many games have to have lead characters who occupy a minuscule slice of the whole range of human diversity. Doesn't it make a lot of sense to question the assumption that male, or more accurately straight white male, equals the normal default go-to option? Why should this be so if gamers can be a lot of things other than straight or white or male?

Even from purely apolitical storytelling standpoint, variety is desirable. You're not checking a box for half-hearted tokenism when your game has a nontraditional lead who is properly situated in their world with decent writing. But even that isn't strictly necessary if random guys can be lead characters for no reason in particular.

There really aren't that many games that fit the description in the first place, though we do have some examples (even if OP dismisses them).

So I was having a discussion in a Discord server about tropes and cliches in fantasy settings and it eventually led to the kinds of fixed protagonists that tend to be the "hero" of fantasy RPGs. It then occurred to me there is still no AAA modern open world game with only a female protagonist.

Now, I know exactly what you're thinking (probably), that there're many AAA modern open world games that let you play as a female, right? No, that's not what I mean; I mean there is still no AAA modern open world game with ONLY a female protagonist. All games have either the choice between m/f and/or you play as a guy most of it then a woman thereafter. What I'm saying is there is still the male being either the support or role model that you still have to play as. Also by modern I mean in terms of setting as in the modern times.

There's no (just a wild random example) kind of game like Watch_Dogs or... I dunno, GTA or Sleeping Dogs game where a woman is on the front cover by herself and is the sole protagonist you only play as. There's no Tommy Vercetti or Carl Johnson or whatever of the female kind in games still. Mirror's Edge you say? That's first-person only and I wouldn't say it's true open world since you're mainly on rooftops and such.

Is this a potential gap in the market to exploit for marketing bragging?

It seems weird to exclude fantasy and sci fi games, particularly since modern day open world games are so few to begin with.

However even if we do include ALL open world games you still have a point OP. Having one or two games that do have a female protagonist doesn't make your claim invalid, your just off by a couple.

I would not be surprised if the next GTA has a main female character that is just as important as the male character .

I would like a character like this in the next GTA

charlize theron in the movie "monster"

Wow what a movie that was. I was mentally exhausted after watching it. I needed some Nintendo games after that.

There's no female lead character in GTA the same way there're no female lead characters in Scarface, Godfather or Goodfellas, and GTA is heavily inspired by these.
It's difficult to paint women having mafiaesque activities the same way dominant males are doing it in popular culture.
I don't say it's good or bad or that it'll never happen but usually when woman are allowed to have violent activities (like Thelma and Louise, Kill Bill or Monster) it always has to be motivated by some kind of vengeance (and usually against males).
