Demon Ruins and Lost Izalith... not nearly as bad as I remember. Discovered some new areas this time too, which is always exciting and full of valuable loot. Mobs are dull, but the one-on-one engagements are fun. Should hopefully have this and the DLC wrapped up by the weekend. Been an awesome journey once again!

lol both were worse than I remember, with poor bosses. But Centipede Demon is actually fightable now instead of being a framerate screen hogging mess, so that was cool.

I love the lore of the demons and it's better to look at it. Izalith can be raced through fairly quickly. But it's still...unfinished. And I will always leave it for last, always.

Spent hours doing Forest Hunter invasions before I remembered the covenant only has a tiny amount of progression xD Still good fun, people have a hard time in that area - it's nice adding to it.

You're...level 24...and you're still...at Taurus Demon? And having issues? How...?

I remember progressing very (very) slowly back in 2011 when I didn't know where to go and how far it was to the next bonfire, and worried needlessly about losing what was really always a paltry amount of souls - I can imagine this happening if you're being cautious and often double back to spend souls.

The game is a lot better if you maintain some forward momentum obviously, but it's not like this is an incomprehensible mystery

Speaking of the forest covenant, how does that work now with the new weapon upgrade matchmaking?

It used to be a free for all and you'd get matched with very high level players. Is it still the same, or in line with the rest of the game and new rules?

I used to llike running through VoD, joining the covenant first thing and then invading and running away/hiding a few favourite hideyholes and wait for another invader to kill the host and many times would end up with half a million souls or something and just be set for the rest of the game! >_<

Hi guys, I know this question has been asked to death but how do people who have the original version with DSFix feel about the remaster after a week? Are the visual changes and improved online good enough to justify the purchase?

My friend lent me his PC a few weeks ago and I ended up loving DS1 although I hated it when I played it last year - but all of the stories about the mixed reactions to the actual changes and stuff turned me off from buying the remaster. Are those still a thing?

Man, this is bullshit. The black bow of Pharis NPC suicide dropped, I quit and reloaded didn't respawn and the drop wasn't there. Anything I can do?
If you're on ps4 I could drop one for you from my retired plat run build. Either high level (probably a +14) or I could get you a new low level one. I'd just need to kill O&S to warp back from where I left it at the giant blacksmith. I'm assuming dropping weapons still works.

Still the same, strong builds one shots casual builds, a friend of mine is drowning on titanites right now

I was level 100 at the end of Bloodborne :o I guess I have a slow playstyle for these games.

Wait what? Aren't bonfires supposed to be a safe area/zone? I was sitting on the bonfire in Undead Parish under the dragoon in human form because I was looking at my stats trying to decide what to level up when all the sudden I get kicked out of the bonfire menu and some random anon invaded me and killed me. Was this a bug?

I've been meaning to ask. Is upgrading armour worthwhile? I ever only upgraded the weapons (and maybe a shield) on II and III.
Prioritize the weapons, but if you have some leftover shards, it can definitely help.

Holy shit hahaha. Tragedy averted!

Come on, be nice. Anyone that plays a soulsgame is ok in my book. A lot of people give up on the first boss.
Gaming elitism is just silly.
Eh, I don't think galv is being elitist, but just a bit puzzled considering that the poster he's replying to has beaten Bloodborne and all. If he were a completely new player that'd be different.

No.. That's literally how invasions work.
Either beat the boss in that area or go hollow - you won't be invaded.

If it's your first time through I find the slow approach perfectly reasonable, it's easy to become a bit blasé when you know this stuff like the back of your hand. For the record I think my first NG run of Bloodborne stopped clocked in at around level 80-90, while my first DS1 run ended at 100+.

Anyway, the Taurus Demon - killing it in a stand-up fight is Challlenge Mode because of the limited space, use the tower to cheese him with plunge attacks. If you've found a decent weapon you should only have to connect with 2 or 3. I actually happened to stream this exact bit just a few days ago, so I made a highlight for your perusal: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/268222113

Not all bonfires are safe. Basically, if you can use your white soapstone (as in, it's not greyed out), it's also a place where you can be invaded, assuming the boss is still alive. If you can't drop it, you're either already being invaded, or you're in a single-player zone (e.g. Firelink Shrine or the area between Taurus Demon and the Hellkite Drake bridge).

Coming from Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3 which were my first FromSoft games it's hard to get used to the rolling and other mechanics. I'm so used to things being super responsive. Going with a dex pyromancer for a change.

I replayed the original with DSFix and a fanmod just a few weeks before the remaster launched, and I'd never go back to it. Personally the visual changes aren't that noticeable when you're actually playing (apart from the attention grabbing ones like brighter souls), there haven't been any moments where I've thought "this looks wrong". The only other contentious change is introducing weapon matchmaking, which sounded worse when it was first discovered than it actually is. It's not much different from Dark Souls 3's and largely just protects low levels from twinks.

The most important change is that it runs well now. Even with DSFix you couldn't maintain 60 FPS, and because the game was built for 30 it also introduced bugs, like sliding through the floor when going down a ladder. The remaster is smooth, consistent 60 in all areas of the game. They introduced convenience features like being able to change covenants at bonfires, as well as level scaling when using password matchmaking. They also added proper mouse & keyboard support, with keyboard prompts and everything. And of course, the community is active again.

In my opinion the remaster completely obsoletes the original release, and is well worth what they're asking for it.

Not related to Dark Souls Remastered as such, but after finishing it I had to settle the score with Midir in DS3.

I finally beat the git, at last I feel as if I've "finished" the trilogy.
Kalameet is still the gold standard for them dragons though.

Sinh is by far the best dragon fight in the entire series.
I completely forgot about him, in my head the only DS2 dragon was the ancient dragon, who of course exists on the opposite end of the spectrum to Sinh.

Oh, heck no. Them's fighting words. Midir fight was better imo.
Each to their own, but I really felt Midir was a game of specifically baiting certain moves so you could actually hit its noggin more often than not

I don't want to belabor the point but there are plenty of opportunities to hit his head and punish him after he attacks.

That's the only way I play him.

The only moves you cant punish is his charge, flying flame attack and mosh pit arena sweep

1. Low equipload+shield with stability
2. Run past the first gargoyles *if hit stop before the second gargoyles, turn towards the gargoyles you ran past, shield their lightning attack or dodge it then heal. Now quickly go to step 3...
3. Run past the second gargoyles, while on the first ledge you will be protected from the arrows but might take a lightning to your back from the gargoyles, after the ledge, stay close to the wall and heal
4. Run up the ledge to the archers, immediately go to the right one with your shield up. Do not attack! Just try to stay on the inside and let him attack you - he will fall down.
5. Profit.

As well as the other methods mentioned there is always a little cheese. Poison arrows work nicely if you don't mind the wait. No need to even climb up until the knights are dead.
If you have magic you can equip the slumbering dragon ring, cast invisible body and practically walk up to them before they notice you. 1 soul spear and no more knight and for new game plus you can bring your own big bow and knock em off their perch :)

Finally managed to get to those damn archers after around 10+ tries. I ran up with 2H a shield and nothing else, dodged the arrows, ran up to the archer on the right and waited for him to attack me. He fell down after 3 strikes to my shield. Success!

Instantly beat Ornstein and Smough with the help of Solaire, though. That was... unexpected.

^^^ LMAO

I rarely curse here, but Artorias was fucking amazing. Reminds me of some of the most intense boss fights from the games that followed. The look, music, a great moveset, and what an intro. Easily among the most memorable fights IMO. Took a handful of attempts just to get used to his timing, and then a few more to whittle him down consistently and find the right windows to attack.

As much as I loved playing w/ dsfix and other mods, after playing Remastered, I won't be going back to it. All of the small improvements add up to a much better experience across the board. The framerate is so smooth. I was a huge skeptic of the PC version in particular, but I have zero regrets after playing through this. Even considering continuing into NG+ to chase the 100%.

I have 11 humanity and can get 30+ with items. Worth it to just finish the Chaos covenant off and get the 2nd pyro spell if I'm Pyro/Knight?

The visuals look about the same to me. Then again, I am not the guy that would notice anything unless it was a significant upgrade or downgrade. The online is improved significantly. Summoning and invading was super hit and miss on the original. Its really smooth here.

But I think more than those two, what makes me feel like its money worth is the increased player count. You can invade and co op in so many more places. Plus it was pretty cheap with the discount you get for owning DaS.

Its not am amazing remaster. But its great to be able to get into the Co op/PVP again. If I bought it only for the SP I would feel 100% ripped off though.

If you won't be switching covenants any time soon, maybe. Probably better to hold off until you place the lordvessel so that you can open up the shortcut while you're at it.

Don't blame yourself. :) The game's structure, which is the most open of any Souls game, is going to come with those types of issues, which can't be avoided (unless they had enemy scaling relative to player/gear level, which I don't think would be good either). I actually find the exploration and discovery in Dark Souls to be the star. Bosses are usually gates to progression, and while some of them are truly highlight material, for me they pale in comparison to the world itself, which even today doing a replay, is managing to give me that sense of wonder and feelings of "Wow, I can't believe this elevator took me back *here*!", when it felt like a million miles away.

Edit: I got to Sif really early this time, and man, I got destroyed multiple times. Weapon was doing hardly any damage. Had to use a resin to get any sort of decent DPS. On the flipside, I've done so much other stuff that I'm OHKO'ing just about everything in Lost Izalith and the DLC. So yeah, it just depends on when you get where and with what gear.
I am truly having a great time exploring the world so I definitely agree. Love meeting new characters and such also.

If you're at 60 with a +15 and fighting Sif, you're pretty over leveled for the game to be fun ... I think the recommended level for Sif is 35+
Yeah, felt like it. Without following a guide though, I didn't know to come to Sif earlier, he's pretty tucked away. If I'm just overlevelled in general though, I don't know how, I've never intentionally grinded for souls, or joined other players or anything. Only thing I can think of is I've died a LOT outside of bosses lmao, and replayed sections many times because of it, which could be like accidental grinding.

I think what you experienced with Bloodborne was the previledge you get when playing your first Souls game. You're just too good now. Had you gone into Bloodborne after playing the other games, you would have found all the mandatory bosses super easy as well. Also, limiting yourself can be fun!
This crossed my mind, and could be a small aspect, but I honestly I just feel like my DPS is too high rather than me being too good (even though I'd like to claim that haha). Y'know, maybe I'll switch out my upgraded weapon for something new and see if my damage output becomes more appropriate.

Here's a somewhat weird question: once you've delivered 30 humanity to Quelaag's sister and the Chaos Servant covenant, you get the pyromancy spell and she opens the shortcut, right? Is it ok to... uh, kill her to get the firekeeper soul? Does the shortcut stay open?

Seems evil...

Come on dude, most people just level up as much as they can. It takes some experience in these games to say 'I'm not leveling over X level for my build' or whatever.

Also, if this remaster is post patch original game, they hand out souls and homeward bones like candy on Halloween. What else are you going to do but level up?

Is Pinwheel like the greatest troll move in the game, by the way? I still don't get what they were going for there, it just feels like free souls and a big anticlimax after a very engaging bit of tomb raiding.
