Does anybody think that Sushi Striker could be a better playing experience on the 3DS? Simply because of the stylus control? Using the touchscreen in the demo on the Switch means that my hand obscures a lot of the rows. I think I prefer button controls for the Switch demo. BUT this game looks like using stylus could be the best control method. Only problem with the 3DS version is that I don't think the online will be as populated as the Switch version. Cheaper though.

I've never heard of this game! I just looked at some videos and it looks fantastic, and its £3 on the UK eShop too! Will be buying now. Have that team made other games like that? I am absolutely LOVING Switch for its portable arcade games, its amazing and perfect for the sort of gaming I am mainly interested in these days.

The game was produced by the same team of 'Runbow' but created by other different small team.

There have been other lot of games imitating the look and aesthetics of the original Game Boy in the last years.

'Super Rad Raygun' or 'Fitz the Fox' to name a few commercial games released in Steam.

Talking about Switch games, the recent 'The Adventures of Elena Temple' for Switch imitated the classic look of various classic handhelds.

Elena-3.jpg

And the user's favorite in this thread, 'Vostok Inc.', included various minigames with Game Boy aesthetics.

900x.jpg

And most importantly, if you are super into games imitating the look of a classic Game Boy, there have been some memorable jams centered in imitating this distinctive look.

For example, in the GBJAM 5 created in itch.io, 395 new games using this look were submitted .

And a lof of them can be played in your internet browser :)

Is the humor in West of Loathing better than that one Cactus "joke" in the eshop screenshot? Because it isn't funny.
Most definitely.

I didn't even think the trailer was funny but bought it anyway in good faith. I've been laughing out loud heartily the entire time. It's not really the kind of humor that works in screenshots.

Make sure to keep checking the bookshelf in your room at the start.

Hang on, The Infectious Madness of Doctor Dekkar is coming to the Switch Europe eShop? Ah man that's a game I've been wanting to play on Steam but I'd love for it to make it to the NA shop. As someone who loved Contradiction Spot the Liar, this could be up my alley. Also Ryan Rand from Contradiction is in Doctor Dekkar.

Thanks tolkir ! I know it is a last month's release but you all should consider Yoku's it is up there with Steamworld Dig 2 as one of the most polished, fun indie games of recent times.

Wasn't Just Beats & Shapes supposed to have a demo? Also it's nowhere to be found on EU eShops, not even in the coming soon section. Game looks legit great, tho $20 is a tad expensive for me atm but maybe I'll be able to snag it for €15 tops on some eShop.

Pirate Pop Plus I fear without leaderboards it won't hold my interest, like the fantastic RunGunJump. :( It's only
€4 but still I know it will annoy me and even more if the offline leaderboards aren't properly sorted by modifiers like Epylexia wrote (btw your username always makes me think of Epyx ahhhhh good old C64 days!!)

GRIDD: RETROENHANCED looks AWESOME. Hopefully it'll be a great port

I'm probably missing something, but how can I see if a game can be played with touch controls? Take Mushroom Wars 2 for example or Yesterday Origins. It notes the pro-controller under supported controllers, but that's it? And that one is basically a given, whereas touch controls aren't. Reviews dont' always mention it either (if there are any!), adding to the uncertainty.

Seconded. It was only thanks to touch controls that I was able to beat that sluggish port of Oxenfree, and touch+joycons is my favorite way to play Thimbleweed Park.
I wish all games had at least touch-support for the UI and menus.

West of Loathing is pretty amazing. I was wrong to judge it by its appearance. That's certainly half of its charm, tbh.

The humor is indeed hilarious, i haven't laughed out loud this much at a video game since... i mean, I don't even know when.

I'm so not one for point and clicks but this is very palatable. Reminds me of the trading meta game in Link's Awakening.

Mediocre mobile action game

I'm only about a half hour in, but does the humor shift or get deeper? I've seen nothing but praise for this fame being funny, and it just isn't hitting with me so far. It seems a competent fake overall, and I'll get my $11 worth, but I'm not feeling the overall praise currently.

I will say, not much in this game is screaming to me so far. It's competent, but I might have a tough time picking it up again. But....I WILL!!!

Is the humor in West of Loathing better than that one Cactus "joke" in the eshop screenshot? Because it isn't funny.

I remember seeing those screen shots and thinking the same thing. I'm only 30 minutes in, and I haven't seen anything styled differently than the over the head, wackiness that's very overt and not at all subtle or built up over time.

Sorry for the double post, but I just got an email with my Bloodstained: Circle of the Whatever This Castlevania Game is called, from Fangamer for backing Bloodstained, and the Switch codes are out!!!

Better time frame than I expected, given the delay, and the Steam access code being good til June 8th.

I just got it and I love it! Is a pretty decent action game by itself but the true joy of it comes whenever you refuse to follow the narrator's direction and he constantly breaks the 4th wall and you learn more about the whole proccess of creating this game that might or might not be true.

I found the Switch UI fairly comfortable once I detached the Joy-Cons and played the game with my thumbs on the screen, but you can definitely tell that this was originally designed for the 3DS (just look at the clarity of separation between the playable space of the shared lane and your opponent's side of the table), and I'm weighing the same question in my head. Once I practiced S-ranking in the demo I found that sticks/buttons were not a great way to play this game at all, so it's going to be entirely a portable game for me either way. It may also be a factor for others that the 3DS version is not only cheaper but will not require an online subscription (though who knows how long 3DS online multiplayer will remain supported by Nintendo; it will someday be taken down sooner than online on the Switch, that's for certain).

Mainly, though, I'm leaning towards the Switch version if I do pick this up, simply as I'm finding more and more situations these days where I pack my Switch for travel but not my 3DS, so I'm just likelier to play the game if it's on Switch. And there's a major factor you haven't mentioned, which is built-in screenshot capture and video recording—something that matters a lot to me in my Switch library as it's what I use as a kind of personalized achievement system for keeping records and time-stamped high scores.

I'm not happy at all with the price hike from the 3DS version, and this is unmistakably a stylus game, but touch-screen play on the Switch was a more comfortable fit than I imagined simply because the UI elements are all large enough on the screen to manipulate consistently. Still, the "hold to accelerate" lane gear mechanic seems like a much better fit for a stylus, as it's easier to hold a position without obstructing your vision of the playing field. So I'm torn.

Guys, Just Shapes & Beats is SO damn fun.

I played the game last year at PAX East and knew that it would be fun with friends, but I wasn't expecting the single-player story mode to be as fun as it has been. It's taken me totally by surprise in a good way. This game was obviously designed and developed by people who love video games. I've also had a ton of fun playing challenges online with randoms.

Just Shapes and Beats is so good. Singleplayer is fairly challenging but there's also Casual mode if you just wanna get through it. But multiplayer is super fun. So many Switch games are local multiplayer only so it's refreshing to have one that's also online for when I don't have friends around.

Has anyone here played Yesterday Origins and know if it's playable using only the touchscreen? Would be perfect for a point and click. I googled but couldn't find out.

I've been going back & fourth contemplating picking up Yonder.

Love 'relaxing' type games like Stardew Valley and the art style looks really nice. For every glowing review is a comment about how it's shallow and feels like 'something is missing'.

Anyone feel like swaying me one way or another?

'Elliot Quest' is a quite interesting open world platformer, with a similar structure to 'Zelda II' in the NES, and not so many games have tried to imitate this formula in video game history.

It's far from perfect, thought.

The placement of the enemies in the scenario is forgettable, being far from some of the best indie attempts in the genre such as 'Environmental Station Alpha', 'La-Mulana' or 'Cave Story+'. Simply, as an action platformer, 'Elliot Quest' is very forgettable and instead of creating interesting platforming sections, it relies too much in putting hit-sponges in front of you.

The pixel art is nice, but it tries to imitate so hard some distinctive graphic effects from early SNES titles. And simply, these graphic effects don't look good in a LCD screen because they were originally designed to be displayed with scanlines.

And the sound design is awful, making to hit the enemies as something not very satisfactory, that is the worst thing that can be said of a game trying to imitate 'Zelda', one of the peaks of sound design in video game history.

Plus I found some bugs that still haven't been patched, like the soundtrack disappearing in a cave after loading a save game.

But even with all of these evident flaws, the game does an amazing work in creating a gigantic open map than can be explored in a pure 'Zelda' spirit, full of secrets. Resulting in a captivating game if you are in the mood for some exploration heavily relying in the use of backtracking, trying to unveil every secret in the game.

I think that it deserves the asking price point.

Not a masterpiece, no the best indie 'Zelda II' clone (I still prefer 'Chronicles of Teddy'), not even the best open world paltformer in the eShop (I enjoyed much more games such as 'Toki Tori 2+', 'Steamworld Dig 2' or even 'Axiom Verge' with all of its imperfect things).

But it's still a game that I can recommend, forgetting some of its clear flaws and giving that this has been created by a single developer.

And it's not only a love letter to 'Zelda II', but also to some of the early Quintet titles for SNES, with an art style clearly influenced by the first 'Actraiser'.

It really is exactly what it looks like - a very mellow exploration game in a pretty 3D landscape that sits somewhere between "Breath of the Wild" and "Fantasy Life". Since there's no combat, the gameplay is all about poking around the landscape for chests/matarials, crafting items to finish quests (some of which stick around long-term, like bridges), or running any of the small farms the game lets you put up. It isn't a very deep title in terms of gameplay mechanics, but it does offer a lot of breadth in terms of things to do and it is very relaxing to just wander from place-to-place across the lush countryside.

Mario Tennis is offering double gold coins for pre-ordering.

Can someone translate that to dollars or cents for me, please.

I'm on the cusp of considering digital only now that GCU is ending.

I didn't take to the demo for a few reasons but controls were a part of it. Reading your post makes me want to try it screen only since using the touch screen with joycons attached was awkward so I defaulted to the stick. I wonder if there were or are plans to add a TATE/vertical mode to mimic the layout of the 3DS. I imagine it would be easier to get your thumbs to where they need to be while still keeping a good grip on the screen.

I have just gained the swim below water ability and am at the part where I've to find a way into Village of the Unders. I swim under and there is a pink part where I seem to need a key...where is this? Or how do I get in?

Where is this offer being shown? The eShop website still just shows 300 coins for purchasing, which is the standard 5% rate.

it says it on the product page. However they 300 points come days after it unlocks, as opposed to the regular 300 points which you get as soon as you are charged.

I can't find the answer to this anywhere: Is Yoku's Island Express 60 fps in Switch?

Absolutely. 60 fps both portable and docked, 1080p docked. 720 undocked. A very good and solid port IMO.

The only drops are when you get the ability to jump quickly between different sections of the maps. Sometimes, the game stops for loading a new chunk of the map. But that ability isn't gameplay related.

I previously played other touch-based games on the Switch this way (like Human Resource Machine and Thimbleweed Park) and found it comfortable, which is why I thought to try it. It seems silly at first to use the Switch as a screen-only mobile device, but it actually feels wonderful in the hands—less awkward and unwieldy than a full-size tablet, very light with the Joy-Cons off while just thick enough to be held firmly, small enough to give you full coverage of the whole screen, but large enough compared to a phone that UI elements aren't too cramped and you can use your thumbs without worrying about accuracy. And it was clear to me right away, trying this in the Sushi Striker demo, that the UI on the Switch was designed to accommodate this: you can navigate menus, skip cutscenes, or activate special powers with a tap of your left thumb while manipulating plates with your right. I couldn't stand the stick controls because it was just too hard to start up chains in the precise direction I wanted while all the targets were moving.

The one limitation to this is that when you resume from suspend, the Switch still checks for a Joy-Con connection by pressing L+R, so you still need to connect the controllers even if they're detached and you aren't using them. That's not too much of a bother, though—I just leave them beside me on the desk and reach over if I want to click the screenshot button. It might be an issue if you want to play tablet-style on the bus. This isn't the only time I've run into this, too; I think Thimbleweed Park worked the same way, since it was also designed around simultaneous support for touch and button inputs.

I actually don't think vertical mode would have worked for this because the sushi plates would have been too small for thumbs, and much closer to the stylus-suited dimensions they have on the 3DS display.
