That girl from infamous second son with the pink hair had her own expansion pack. does that count.

No expansions either.
Seems like people still don't read OPs it seems, or thread titles for that matter.

AAA
No male support/lead and/or m/f choice
Modern setting

I see inFamous First Light brought up, I'll give you that, even if it is a standalone expansion to a main game with a different lead.

Shit, I forgot about Mad Max not counting as well. Seriously like half of the games this guy lists doesn't even fulfill his own criteria.

Exactly. I didn't. Hence the "modern open world or not" in my comment :)

Just simply listed two more great games with female leads. Cause OP's super particular topic is disregarding a ton of great female led games over the years regardless of it not being a "modern open world AAA game with a female lead".

Actually the OP is a bollocks OP with a stupid stipulation.
Why does it matter what time period the game is set when we have AAA open worlds with only a female protagonist? How bout that.

Come to think about it, wouldn't Lightning Returns fit OP's rather specific criterias?

It's an open world game with a singular female protag, and the setting could be considered modern, low-fantasy, like FFVIII's.

Lightning Returns is open world, though.

Going by op's list. Both tomb raider games have male support characters
Huh? To fit the criteria of "Modern AAA open world game with a female protagonist," the game also can't have male support characters?

That's some wild goal-post placement.

The whole reasoning for the thread is odd, looking for Female leads in such a specific game. The only thing this thread has taught OP is how many strong female leads there have been this gen, it's just that they don't fit into their weirdly specific slot (I assume so they can have a moan).

First world problem, really, who cares. And btw, Horizon is set in a post-apocalyptic future, which is still future for me.

"guys, there's no game fitting my list with those 10 criteria's"
Even though some fit your title and OP, you had to do some goalpost moving...

You can make a female character in every Saints Row game. I suppose that doesn't have overt female characterization but it works about as well as it does in Mass Effect.

So to be honest, a better thread title would be:

Why is there not a GTA game (or clone) with a female protagonist?

Op has listed GTA, Watch Dogs, Sleeping Dogs, True Crime as the games that meet the requirements.

Mirror's Edge apparently doesn't count because it's only on the rooftops.

Op has also said that a choice of character doesn't count. The protagonist has to be only female, no choice.

Why the hell she wrote in such a convoluted manner, I really don't know.

But there you have it, guys.

There's not enough women MC, think most of us can agree on that. This thread however, is just silly. It wouldn't kill you OP to just admit you made a bad call and take the L and move on.

Not only did you overlook a game that speaks directly to your question, but the question itself is so narrow. What is it even trying to say? Do we need a female protagonist in every type of game to fill some quota?

This.

OP failed horrendously. Is this unwavering gender inclusion thing what Resetera has now become?

"Why isn't there an action adventure, third person game in which you raid tombs and where you play as a man whose last name is Croft. Also it needs to have bows. And this specific ground texture, otherwise it won't qualify"

What a sad misinformed thread. In addition to the games already mentioned, I've seen so many women in gaming this generation I can't even take this thread seriously.

Even Uncharted: The Lost Legacy ended up with two amazing female main characters.

Don't even get me started on how female characters have suddenly become wildly popular in games that allow character creation.

Progress is happening. I don't buy this thread at all.

Guys there were ZERO spiritual successors to Final Fantasy Tactics last year that featured all-female casts and utilized a classic JRPG overworld, 2.5d graphics, and rhythm-based snowboarding gameplay.

What gives?

Maybe this has been one big joke thread meant to bait us and we fell for it? I honestly can't see how someone made this with any form of sincerity. It's just so overly specific it's comical.

Is this for real? I mean a bunch of people are getting mod warnings here and there and this thread doesnt qualify as a warning?

It literally feels as if the OP is trying hard to start a fire here. Placing a bunch of requirements (must be open world, must be AAA, must be modern , must not have male/female option, must...) to make a non-existent point, is baffling to me.

Yes there are female protagonists for a bunch of great games modern or not and it doesnt mean anything if the game is open world or not, or if it is AAA and whatnot.

Like another folk a few posts above said we want GOOD games. And there have been a bunch of really good games with really strong female protagonists....

Burn this thread.

Infamous SS
Just Cause 3
Watch Dogs 2
Technically Yakuza but it's set on a few blocks so I dunno

That's all that comes to mind. Literally only 3 current gen only sandbox games set in modern times.

Kinda crazy isn't it?
OP overplayed his hand in progressive points. Yeah it will get a lot of clicks but the funny thing is, Infamous First Light is the best modern open world game out this generation.

Town adjacent to Silent Hill
I don't know why people are being so catty in this thread. I thought it was pretty clear what the OP was asking for, and the observation that Rockstar-esque open world games seem to be short on leading ladies is not an unfair one. All those 'you can play other types of games' comments might be accurate, but come across as pretty dismissive. It's not like the Rockstar-esque open world titles are this tiny niche type of game. If a dev were to venture into this direction, can we expect folks to start foaming from the mouth again like when San Andreas and Mafia 3 showed off their protagonists?

No, those games don't count because of *reasons*. No, I don't have an agenda, why do you ask?

Horrible thread, horrible poster.

Those requirements are really overly-specific, and yet the conclusion is still wrong.

And judging from OP's posts they're totally willing to be lenient when it comes to male lead games but will discount women lead games for barely anything.

It can be an expansion but that's different from being a full game. GTA doesn't match the OP description.

Not exclusively, other games incl. Just Cause, Mad Max, Dying Light, Yakuza, Bully, Spider Man, Driver... yeah, a lot of those have crime in it but what modern-setting open world game doesn't?

LA Noire is modern compared to HZD, 20th century is comparatively modern.

Read above for list of games.
As for the gap, it's huge, considering there's only 1 game that fits the description in the OP.

I really considered ME but I don't consider pre-placed rooftop jumping to be open world, where're the vehicles, the free roaming, etc?

Rooftop jumping isn't open world.

So what you're basically looking for is a modern-setting open world game in third person with driveable vehicles with a story specific to its female protagonist?

I mean, even if you're only talking about male protagonists that's a very narrow genre. I can only think of a handful of series that qualify:

GTA
Watch Dogs
Just Cause
Sleeping Dogs

There's also Saints Row but as I understand it you've always created the protagonists in those games so they don't count, and Mafia/LA Noire are set at least half a century ago so are not contemporary. There may be others I've forgotten, but those are the big series.

But OP wants a game that doesn't even have a male support character. I can't see having a gta style open world game with a female lead NOT having a male support character. That just doesn't seem realistic to me.

This thread is crazy. The original post may have been poorly thought out, but the way some people are reacting is crazy.

If you reverse m/f you'll probably find dozens of games which fit the description. The fact that there are a few games meeting that description despite what the thread title says does not invalidate in any way the strong imbalance in that regard.
