The Elder Scrolls: Legends will be swapping development teams entirely, according to a statement to IGN from Bethesda. The original developer, Dire Wolf Digital, will be transitioned off of the project and replaced by Dropzone developer Sparkypants Studios.
While Hines says the transition won't result in a complete and drastic overhaul of Legends, it will bring an entirely new client made by Sparkypants, a refresh of the UI, menus, and visuals, and the ability for the development team to iterate better to address balance issues and community requests faster. You can take a first peak at part of the redesigned board above.
"This is obviously something we've had in the works for a while and part of a plan to make Legends move more quickly going forward. We want to be more responsive, quicker to add new features and functionality, add new content at a predictable cadence, and so forth."

That's strange surely? Changing developer for an ongoing GaaS title is a bit odd. Can't recall it happening before.

Why would they do this?

Is Pete Hines funding Legends all by himself? He seems very excited about it all the time lmao

Is there community thread for this game here? My group of friends started playing like 3 months ago and it's been pretty good. The game is basically Hearthstone with some interesting twists and a way more consumer friendly f2p monetization system

Don't think there is really a community here. I started an OP post on the old site and it never even got to the second page.

It's a shame because it's a fantastic game. I urge anyone interested in digital card games to check it out. It has some unique interesting mechanics that make the game a lot of fun.

They clearly feel Direwolf is incompetent at shipping content and features regularly, even though they liked their design pitch.

I think that's definitely it. They released an expansion in July of 2017, and the next content was an adventure (50 cards) in December, almost 5 months after it followed by an expansion (140 cards) in April, which was 9 months after the last expansion and way too late in digital card games.

Yeah there was a huge content drought when I started. Meta was apparently stale and even content guides were very dated. With morrowind out, community has definitely picked up as of late.

Geez, Direwolf must have really fucked up big time for Bethesda to do this.

I never really got into Legends despite being a big Elder Scrolls fan but that's more due to me not really liking card games. I'll still check it out once it transfers over, though.

I think the main problem is that Direwolf has other ccg's that they're developing/supporting. So they're spread thin. It's a great time to check out this game. The game is just so generous with free cards packs shards and gold. Even arena run tickets are handed out frequently for free.

There's an extensive single player campaign to start and you even get a free theme deck.

That's a shame I really liked the way Direwolf made the game so I hope that the new developer doesn't go crazy with the microtransactions and doesn't change the current gameplay formula.

I don't think the new developer would have much of a say in micro transactions (and Direwolf didn't either).

That's up to Bethesda, so I doubt it will change much.

I really enjoyed the couple of weeks I spent playing this. Better then it's competitors imo.

Might jump back in when the updates drop.

Any sign of a console client ?

I know direwolf does run other ccgs. I play eternal which they develop and that seems to get new content fairly regularly. Maybe elder scrolls legends got pushed to the side for their completely in house projects.

Does anybody play this game? The only time I hear about this game is at E3.

It was kinda dead for a bit but with morrowind expansion out as well as the competitive scene finally taking off with developer support, the game is on an upswing... even when it was slow prior, you could always easily find a match. Never took me more than 15 seconds to find a match

Link your account and tune in to the Bethesda twitch channel during E3 to get some game bonuses.

If anyone gets TESL drops they don't want (especially the E3 card back), I'd be happy to use it. My most played game. ;)

New client launched last night. It's a huge step down from the old client and people are really upset.

The game wasn't too popular prior to this, and this new client is probably going to be the death of the game especially with Magic Arena open beta starting tomorrow and Artifact coming soon.

I haven't got to play yet but first impressions online are pretty bad.

Pretty much everything besides faster loading and slicker menus are a step back. Lots of graphical glitches, game not keeping up if you play too many cards in succession, and some voice acting changed for the worse.

i didn't really have problems with the client

i did stop playing the game because the content came out too slowly. the expansions were too small and too infrequent

if the game had a good limited mode i might play more often

The new one looks basically the same. Hearthstone still has the best client of any online card game by far. Blizzard is like the Apple of devs that super polishes everything.

I tried this out for the first time about 2 weeks ago, after remebering it was a thing in the first place, and I really liked the presentation.

As such I'm pretty irritated by this whole thing. Feels/looks like a downgrade for me so far.

I feel bad for people who play this game. It's gonna take time and money to get things straightened out and with a reception like this, with an already smaller userbase, they won't have either.

We would like to provide an update on Legends in regard to new content. Our previous roadmap indicated we would be releasing one more set this year. We decided to put any new content development or releases on hold for the foreseeable future. This decision will not in any way affect the release and development of GAEA's Asia-specific version of Legends, which is operated separately, but will inform our decisions on content and feature development going forward.

Until then, you can still download and play Legends on all existing platforms and compete online as well as in the single-player modes. We will also continue to support the game with monthly reward cards and regular in-game events. New expansions and other future content, however, are no longer under active development. We will continue to provide ongoing maintenance support.

To thank you all for supporting Legends these past few years, and for continuing to play with us, we are giving away The Tamriel Collection – an assortment of new, three-attribute cards and more – to all players for free upon their next login. We are immensely grateful to work on The Elder Scrolls: Legends, to have you as a community, and we sincerely appreciate the love and support you've given us.

I've put about 1000 hours into ESL since it came out and it sucks. I'm glad i never put a cent into the game though because i would pissed. I put my money into Eternal and then MTGA. It's hard to stay alive long in a world of 1000 digital card games.

It's weird that they were making all these huge pushes only to do this. This couldn't have been a overnight decision.

Sad to see it go, but not too surprising. The game never had a huge player base and it kept getting smaller.

I enjoyed it and will be sad to see it go, but I haven't played it in over a year. 2019 seems to be a rough year for card games and magic arena seems to be the only one increasing players.

I wouldn't be surprised if eternal is next.Per steam charts, average players are down about 50% from a year ago and they were never that high to begin with

People have been saying Eternal was dying since a year after release. They've put out 5 major updates with sets/story this year and are committed even more. Just did a 100k event with another in 2020.

We don't know mobile numbers or console numbers. We know it's big enough to continue to do big tournaments and continue to get a ton of support.

Wow that kinda sucks. It always felt shaky (people hate the last expansion), but it still was by far my preferred version of the Heathstone ilk. Just had the best all around flair.

Only ever purchased one of the adventures so I guess I'm part of the problem.

On the other topic, Eternal just recently finished that Switch port I think, so DWD seems to still be confident into their baby, but I agree it is rough, if your not a legacy title having a paper history. I already feel bad for Mythgard and even Riot's Runeterra had a huge drop in viewers on its second beta weekend.

And boy, do I ever hope Valve has more realisitc expectations if they ever bother finishing that Artifact reboot.

The market is oversaturated and the games are too similar. But with even big franchises like The Witcher and The Elder Scrolls failing this doesn't look too great for upcoming games. Similar to the Battle Royal and MOBA genre where a few big games strife and the rest fights for daily survival.

I always wanted to try the campaign of Elder Scrolls Legends. I might have to do this sooner than later ...

That is because all of those games do the same damn thing: 1vs1 competitive. The "campaigns" are 1vs1 AI matches with a small barely animated artwork and voiceover.

I tap into MTGA for daily/season rewards, but I couldn't care less about 1vs1. I loved paper MTG for noob modes: 2vs2, Emperor, Hunt. Fucking MTG demo on Steam had a 2vs2 mode and none of the big cards games do. Chasing that Heartstone scene is a lost cause since both MTGA and HS have way too much momentum. I expect MTGA to get that 2vs2 patch someday, together with the social system. Oh yeah, another reason to hate 1vs1 card games: GG and Hello emotes are all you get from the human opponent, literally the same as playing against AI.

Hex had a good pitch in kickstarter for co-op vs AI dungeons, but it never even gotten close to multiplayer...

The market doesn't need anymore 1vs1 competitive card games, fuck off and give me something new.

The difference between the the 2 is Bethesda can afford to shutdown a game after spending all that time and money into it.

Dire has said multiple times they are committed. It's never had a massive fanbase and never will.

I don't think they had much of a choice in changing developers. Direwolf were clearly ignoring the game in favor of their other game eternal, and expansions were very slow to come out and no new features were being added to the game.

They must have had a terrible contract with direwolf werebdirewolf owned the engine to the game, which is why when they ended the contract with direwolf, they had to have the new developer build an engine from scratch and rush it out. Sparkypants was put in an impossible situation. I'm surprised Bethesda didn't pull the plug then and instead committed all the money it would take to rebuild the game.
