I definitely think Lets Go was always a 3DS game. Hot take here, but I think at some point lets Go was intended to be the 3DS' swan song game, for the anniversary in 2016, but it didn't pan out because Pokemon Go didn't pan out either. Like this would have made A LOT of sense in 2016. It would also explain why SM and Gen 7 feel a lot like it was intended for a single screen device, and why it has a lot of cut corners. At some point, they switched platforms, with Lets Go coming to the Switch, with SM being released on the 3DS instead. I am fully serious, I think SM was planned for a launch on the Switch in 2017.
Very interesting theory, but am sure that's not how it went down based on reports

Wonder if any z moves will be in aswell.

So this seems to be the consensus among casual fans for this game. Top comment on the let's go video on facebook:

Sure, but seemingly not to an extent where the difference becomes too large.
Though, this is of course highly subjective.
Nugget bridge is like x3 times wider in battle. How is that a negligible difference and a subjective opinion?

An engine should be capable of creating grid or non grid design. An engine is just a tool to create a game (and creating a grid like map in a complex engine is still quite possible and easy). Pokemon SM having the pokemon walking animations clearly points that this game was developed after / at the same time of it, and it was decided it was not possible in 3ds (probably due to framerate and being hard to display big pokemon in a correct scale in that screen).
And as for the map... The main issue is that even areas that could be greatly enhanced to improve the feeling of uniqueness hadnt (such as mount moon which looked like a cave or the bridge route being a normal bridge), as well as keeping a quite confined space that seems more interested in replicating the original maps than taking into account the new mechanics (visible encounters + tight spaces is horrible, as well as the big pokemon seeminglt ocupying a TON of space). I hope that if they continue the Lets Go franchise as you said (with gen 2 in teh future), they try to make it a little bit more natural and bigger areas (even if they more or less replicate the maps).
Hmmmm, yeah I guess it shpuldn't be too hard to revert the map to a grid in SM's engine, but it still confuses me as to why go that far when its capable of something better. What confuses me is that it goes even further than the grid, the ocean texture is a lot more similar to gen 6s, and I am pretty sure that i saw in the trailer that the overworld uses pre rendered backgrounds akin to Gen 6 like with Mt Chimney in ORAS, instead of a 3D environment with a skybox like in SM.

Let's Go couldn't have possibly been planned for 3DS if, according to Masuda, production started after GO was released (H2 2016). Many features also couldn't have been used on a 3DS (like Bluetooth exchange).

I'm going to be hopelessly optimistic, and assume that there is a .00001% chance, that now that Let's Go ______ could serve as a dedicated casual side series for (the absolute youngest of) kids who are more used to phone games, that the main series could walk back some of the direction they've gone in in the latest entries.

Oh, if it was after Go's release then ignore me. I thought it was just before Switchs release, not that we had an actual time frame between July 2916-March 2017 for when development started.

I would say they wanted to create an asthetic that called back to the original games and thought a more chibi like approach was better than the more realistic SM (on terms of textures). On the grid... I really dont get it but i guess theyr really wanted to shove nostalgia down people throads. The overworld thing, I dont know, it looks good to me, didnt really notice any prerendered background but i may not have paid too much attention.

In actual measurable units the battle arenas are undeniable larger.
I'm not talking about measurements, I'm talking about suspension of disbelief.

Wasn't there a z move in the trailer (my knowledge of the animations is not good)

To my knowledge there were probably no Z-move animations in the trailer. Golem's explosion had enough flair to be mistaken for one though.

That's not the optimism of a hopeless sap, that's common sense. If they don't branch the series going forward and Gen 9 takes Lets Go and Gen 8 and smack them together, then they are idiots. Having a casual branch and core branch, one for a simple story based adventure that lets you battle and trade friends while having the core flagship branch for exploration, mystery, adventures and ranked battles is the best outcome that could have come from this, and just dialing it back to one path is going to bothersome.

Its not that visible, but you get a glimpse of the SS Annes deck behind some of the giant letter towards the end, and it sure as hell didn't look like in game Kanto on the horizon.

Oh, in terms of suspension of disbelief, sure. If they dial the scale upwards in the overworld just a little more, then its going to be near flawless in Gen 8.

Oh the bolded part is interesting. Do you have inside knowledge? Was EG wrong at the time?
Tom Phillips fought me on it. I told him the next game was 3DS. He told me it was Switch. I had heard 3DS, he clearly hadn't.

I think it was a miscommunication. He heard of the project and that they had ported the engine to Switch for either Let's Go or testing for Gen 8 and he conflated it
so how excited you are about the Let's Go games?
Indifferent.

I'm more excited for Gen 8

I hope they don't cram too much cut scenes into these.
With the ability to maneuver your way around wild encounters these games could end up being great games to speedrun.

Any features for Go you want in Gen 8? (you know you want the coop).

the co-op sounded interesting at first, but thinking about it as presented it doesn't seem super interesting atm.

but we'll see with more details.

The riding Pokemon based on their size and following Pokemon are probably the main things from Let's Go that I want in Gen 8 (based on what we know so far).

I still don't know if I want to play this game or not. On the negative side it's everything I don't care about: less complex mechanics, no competitive scene, Kanto is boring as fuck, 151 Pokémons are a lot less than I'd want. On the positive there's my hope of it being somewhat decent.

Surely I'm hyped for gen 8 next year. This is not for me.

It's less delusional than "it's just Pokemon Go on the Switch lul". I believe they are talking about the Pokeball controller thing and how you can take a Pokemon with you etc.

Wait until they see that a Switch runs for 330€, the game for 60€ and the controller is another 50€ more for a plastic ball with a stick and a button. It's literally the hardest sale ever for people that have been gaming on mobile phones for the last years

For all of my reservations about some of the decisions on the game so far, I will give it credit for one thing.

I'm more curious about it than Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, at the very least. This game has a Doc Brown spider monster moment or two. Whether I'll like those moments, I'm not sure yet. But there wasn't much in the US/UM marketing that grabbed my attention.

Some people blow 600$ every year on a phone, I'm not sure they'll see this as an issue.

I know people that have spent that much on Pokemon Go if not more...

So, Nintendo shares are up again

Yesterday:

Today:

Also, it was reported that Nintendo plans to ship 600,000 copies of LGP+LGE in France alone on day 1. This number is BIGGER than any 3DS Pokemon game and BIGGER than any Switch game. Super Mario Odyssey shipped 350,000 in France day 1.

https://twitter.com/nintendalerts/status/1001813389994323968

So.. with this expectations in France alone... Looks like LGP/LGE first shipment WW will be biggest in Pokemon history. Pokemon Sun/Moon shipped 10 million day 1 on the 3DS.

Crazy!
"This number is BIGGER than any 3DS Pokemon game" is not completely true. Sun Moon shipped the same amount, but those two should have the biggest day one shipment number for any Pokémon game.
