One thing is for sure, this game is gonna sell like pancakes. I can honestly see it winning novembers NPD!
Yeah, for sure. I hope Nintendo really have their Switch production on lock because otherwise they're going to be hard to find this holiday.

Sure there's nothing wrong if a 2018 title plays like a 1996 title. There's nothing wrong too if a 2018 RPG has a map identical to a 1996 one. It's okay to have towns made of 3 houses. Let's be against change, it's acceptable.

Are you alright? No, just because something is old doesn't mean it's bad. Things like isometric cameras have stuck around because they work well in a lot of scenarios.

Would I like to see a fully 3D Pokemon game with a behind the back camera and better 3D exploration? Yeah, of course. That doesn't inherently make them not doing that bad though. Hell, given so many modern games are going with a super bland and generic open world structure i'm actually pretty alright with this one staying the same.

Can someone please help me out here?

As I followed the thread earlier, it was a back and forth between online is in and online isn't in, with it being local only. Now I read a GameStop article and seeing the OP, it mentions online is confirmed.

Does anyone really know at this point whether it is or isn't in?
It's in.

You can box your starter.

Pretty dumb that they can't evolve since it pretty much makes Eevee useless until you learn Last Resort at level 41 (Assuming Z-moves are in). Makes me wonder what the point of choosing the Eevee version is.
Eevee completely destroys Pikachu in terms of cuteness. Screw that Pika, Eevee for life.

Also, let's be real, Pikachu is a hella useless Pokémon too, it makes no difference at all.

Gamespot had a Q&A with Masuda and he confirmed to them that online trading and battling is in fact included in those games.

Online not being in was thankfully a mistranslation.

Confirmation that it is in has greatly improved my thoughts on the game.

O cool, thanks. I imagine they won't be, but that is speculation.

I think that the Eevee/Pikachu you'll het earlier will be way stronger that the normal ones. I am expecting different stats for both.

Pikachu at least gets the light ball (which I assume you'll receive from Surge once you beat him) to keep it semi useful for the game.

Cuteness doesn't mean jack in a fight.

I'm really curious how local co-op will work exactly in this game. It seems like it's drop-in, drop-out, right? To the best I can tell it kinda looks that way, and you can have someone join you pretty much anytime (as long as you aren't already trying to catch something or battling someone or anything like that).

If so, does it basically split the party in two? P1 gets top 3 Pokémon, P2 gets the other 3, and then they can just move them around and stuff from there. Or will there be some other way of determining who has access to what? And in co-op, what's the second player doing when you're trying to capture Pokémon. Do they somehow help with that, are they just doing nothing/taking turns, or does the game go split-screen and P2 keeps doing their own separate things doing those sequences?

Definitely going to be interesting to see how that all works out in any case. I've been curious about the idea of co-op in Pokémon games for a while, but I've never been quite sure about how Game Freak would go about handling it exactly when/if it would happen, so I guess we'll find out soon enough now as we get new details about these games.

So this is innovation for GameFreak? Revisiting Kanto + piggybacking off Niantic's success with Go?

How are you even supposed to catch the Pokemon in handheld mode? Surely they don't expect people to take out the joy con just to throw a pokeball? ...surely?

Because exploration is also a thing. Because the maps in these games is made like a 2D title. Therefore the world feels super limited. No one is criticizing pokemon battles but the rest. Also, this one only has 151 Pokémons. What's tthei excuse ?

To be clear, I dont like anything about these announcement (from content to artstyle) and I'll skip it just like I skipped Go, and I hope reviewers go deep on this having 151/806 Pokemon and still charging more.

But really, I love top-down view for handhelds games, Pokemon its the biggest handheld franchise and the switch its a hybrid console (the only reason its getting a real pokemon game in 2019), so I hope they keep the functional camera and that they dont go for a cinematic one.

I'm going to make a bold prediction but the accessories you put on them give them boosted stats. Kind of like armour in regular RPGs

This looks like such a cash grab with the poke ball accessory and Pokémon Go integration.

It looks good, I just hope there's enough content and not a complete gen 1 ripoff.

I mean i'm just looking at it from my own perspective. I play FE Heroes free on my phone but that doesn't mean I'm now suddenly willing to drop $60 on a mainline title. I'm not underestimating Go's success (I am curious as to how many active players it still holds) but I think people are underestimating how much of its success rides on it being free. I mean Mario is Nintendo's biggest franchise but the paywall for Mario Run made it somewhat of a dud compared to Go, and that price tag was only $10, let alone how most of the people coming from Go would not only have to buy the game but also the $300 system needed to play it

You are posting on a video game forum. That already puts you in the most hardcore 1% of potential buyers.

There are millions of potential consumers out there who may or may not own a Switch, may or may not have played Pokemon before, may or may not have children they want to play the game with.

My reaction's mixed. I love Kanto but I'm bored of capturing and training the original 151 having done it many times over by this point. I quite like the more interactive catching and Pokemon appearing in the over world but how on earth can there be no wild battles?

Also, the graphics and animations are lazy. Blastoise firing out of his mouth? No excuses.

I'll wait and see but it seems overly simplified and casual, hopefully that's just a false impression because the trailer focused on gimmicks.

They should even go back to 2D. It saves a lot of time too.

I don't know what to think of this. Let's break this down:

+ A Pokémon game that finally looks technically competent.
+ Combat reminds me of Stadium, and that was pretty fun.
+ Gen 1, sweet.
+ Perfect for Switch™

- Game seems incredibly dumbed down a là Pokémon Go, with collecting being the main thing instead of fighting or having a story - the trailers didn't even mention the existence of a story.
- Connecting this game to that mess that is Pokémon Go will sure bring in sales, but it seems dumb for many reasons. Like, do frequent Go players basically "win the game" by default by having everyone?
- That Pokéball looks dumb as fuck, but at least it's totally optional.
- Instead of making a new kind of game with new gameplay mechanics and such, seems like they stripped down the experience to the very core. Go connection aside I saw nothing new.

Since my girlfriend used to play Go and she'd probably like this, it's entirely possible I'll pick this up, but I'm not really a fan of what I saw. We got two and a half new Pokémon games today, but neither really interest me. Since they're so into trying out new concepts, I'd like them make a BOTW/Skyrim-like open world game, but I guess that, at least for now, we're stuck between "classic" Pokémon games and mobile style games, plus match 3 spin-offs and such. The upside is that this game looks pretty solid technically, these are graphics I can live with for the Switch, so the next Pokémon games should at least look pretty good. After playing the HD games on the Switch, it was really painful to go back to the 3DS' tiny screens with aliasing and horrible geometries, glad at least we moved on from that.

Sorry if this has been asked/answered already: is there any details on the capturing controls? More specifically, is motion control a requirement or just an option?

I ask because a friend of a friend is disabled and won't be able to use motion controls, and they're looking for any confirmation that the game can be played just with buttons. If anyone has an answer, I'd really appreciate it so I can pass it along.

I realize it's early days and there hasn't been any formal previews/hands-on yet, just asking on the off-chance this was confirmed anywhere.

Didn't Pokemon Go already have a positive effect on sales of the 3DS Pokemon games and hardware??

I guess it did (aided by the fact that a 2DS + game is inside the "impulse purchase" price bracket, while Switch + game is not), but the point is player retention. I doubt many Go players staid for the whole ride of a turn based JRPG, no matter how light it is, especially kids that have only known phone games based on instant gratification.

Cuteness means everything in a game where the Pokémon follow you. You wouldn't use either in a serious combat / online, so I'm going with cute. And that is Eevee no doubt.

Eevee >>> Pikachu.

I'm also so glad they ditched that stupid safety gear they made the characters wear when riding Pokemon in SM. That was too "think of the children" even for Pokemon.

Dignity and courage.

Yeah, this is completely at odds with all the English marketing.

Because I really need to get to sleep right now, I'm just going to leave this at: I don't agree, and it bodes really poorly for Gen VIII if they think this is mainline.
You all understand why I brought up "what defines a generation?" now, eh? :P

I don't think anyone would mistake this for a new generation.

Which is my entire point. If someone dedicated wouldn't shell out cash just because they enjoyed a free game then why would other people who aren't dedicated?

I got second place in a little cup tournament with my Adaptability eevee.
It can hit really hard early in the game if they gave him that and let you use a coice band.

Unfortunately the one aspect the controls we have heard indicates the motion controls are mandatory and despite it being the main control option in Pokemon Go you can't use the touchscreen in hand held mode. There's a chance it might be a mistranslation like with the online debacle but no one has deconfirmed forced Motion controls.

I dont because these are pretty much new IPs.
We're talking about a 20 years old one.

Sure, a new 2D pokemon with modern 2D art would look pretty outstanding.
Why not both, like the most recent Dragon Quest game, which I guess you also hate.

You know, the good thing with "why not both" is that you actually get both.
No, I dont hate DQXI. You know why ? Because they actually did the right thing. Keep the mechanics everyone loves and make a more faithful looking world. Towns looking like towns.
Even for the 3DS game, they didnt simply made a 2D version but also a good looking 3D one.

I don't think there's any chance they'll force motion controls in handheld mode.
