Some questionable decisions in this game.
It's like Gamefreak invented the one step forward two steps back phrase lol.

- No online at all. Wtf? In 2018 that's downright unacceptable. Especially for such a game.

- No random battles. Ok... I honestly wouldn't mind this if they were taking a different approach to wild battles and using overworld models to counter like in some JRPGS but the removal of wild Pokemon battling and making all the interactions purely about catching them? This sucks and basically only appeals to the Go players, sigh.

- Graphics. This point is brought up with every Gamefreak game in recent years, and I can't help but complain again. Game looks completely uncharming with plain artstyle, same washed Pokemon models from the 3DS games and technically unimpressive at all. Why won't anyone from any of the Nintendo dev teams teach them to use Nintendo's hardware more efficiently to achieve better results? And before anyone says something like "but why would they care if it sells 10m units anyway" - there's some truth in it but I'm still disappointed that they basically trap Pokemom games in technical mediocrity, they deserve better.

- What even is this? it's definitely built like a mainline Pokemon game, but it's as if it's made exclusively for nostalgia heavy Go players. Gen 1 only and back to kanto for yet another game. Gee, can't wait to see the same region I already played in like 6 times.

That's just from a few watches of the trailer, I might change my mind later on about few things but can't say I'm excited for now. Will wait to see what the 2019 game is all about.

I watched it again and I'm still confused. WTH is this? How does it differ from a standard entry? What should be expecting here. What a terrible way to handle the announcement of a game in an established franchise.
It's a game set in Kanto where wild Pokemon encounters work like the safari zone (just keep chucking balls and hope you catch the Pokemon before it runs away). No battling wild Pokemon, only trainers.

I love how this looks. Battling is still part of trainers and what not. It's only catching that's like Pokemon Go and that's fine. We get another year of development on the core Pokemon games.

no
We don't know for sure if there is no online, it keeps going back and forth.

And that's the thing. Game Freak is still at a point where a multiplayer-focused, AAA console release may genuinely lack online play.

This is why "We might get Gen 8 & there's a slight chance it won't be as bad as the last 2" isn't enough for me. Game Freak refuses to evolve.

Hmm... can't say it bothers me.
I like GO's pokeball throwing mechanic enough for it to be a good compromise to me.

Wait.

If there are no wild battles, there is no grinding. If there is no grinding... oh boy. This game is going to be painfully easy.

I hope, really HOPE there's grinding in some way. Maybe training arenas full of trainers to battle anytime you want or something like that.

The no-evovling Eevee thing is a bummer, but it makes me curious as to how they plan to buff standard Eevee.

Because, give Pikachu a Light Ball and it's a legitimately good Pokemon for the main story. I wonder if they'll do something like that for Eevee.

The best thing I can say is this

- gamefreak realizes this isn't what the fans genuinely wanted and did amazing damage control but confirming that the next "core" Pokémon game is in fact coming in 2019

Are there gyms? Is there a story? Do we raise the pokemon and train them? There are so many questions core to the series that are not clear form that trailer.

Gen 8 might suck because games journalists aren't being consistent with their reports on this small side game?
Okay.
Gen 8's been in developement since before the Switch released and they already said it won't be like this game and won't be influenced by GO, but will be moving forward from the handheld entries.

So you can actually battle other players online, it's nice that we have a confirmation for that.

This game seems like it has a lot of love and work put into it, certainly not some shitty software. Seriously.
People including myself put love and care into things that end up being terrible looking, it happens.

No online. In 2018. After paid online launches.

It's fucking outrageous

Sure, I guess this game doesnt feel like somehing that requires it to me. Especially with how easy it appears it may be to catch Pokémon. This looks to be geared as a starter series. More about playing through the story and not the standard affair of prior gens.

That is a fair complaint. I'll probably be forever unhappy with Nintendo and their online offerings

Looking at this games visuals I bet it started as a 3DS game that had Pokemon Go implementation in mind from the get go. It was going to release this year as gamefreaks last 3DS game but Nintendo told them last year to port it to the Switch instead. The Gen 8 switch game started development on the switch last year or towards the end of 2016 I bet. Can't wait for it. This should be a fun distraction along with Smash.

Not gonna lie this All made a ton of sense

How is that "good" for us, the players, when they get billions through casualization of our beloved franchises? You sound like a Nintendo employee rather than a player.
cause "us players" should be smart enough to realize this is an SPIN OFF of the main series. take it as you might

Go didn't even have proper battling at launch and as far as I know still doesn't have trading. They're two different games.
this is not a main pokemon is an enhanced GO. I dont get why people is trying to hard to ignore that little argument. is an RPG casual spin off of the main series mixing GO elements and RPG elements, thats it.

The really amazing thing here is:
  • This game's existence and release this year, and the release of Gen 8 next year, means more dev time for Gen 8. The biggest issue with Gens 6 and 7 were how rushed, unoptimizable, and content starved they were, so this extra year is already a great thing
  • The release of this game is proof that Game Freak understands the larger casual audience can't necessarily be served by the core games, and is therefore an indication that the Gen 8 games might not be dumbed down'
  • These games coming first means that the growing pains of HD development will be out of the way with these ones, and that the Gen 8 Pokemon games will be stronger for not being subjected to that
All of this sounds like it would be amazing news for all fans. But no, let's all get indignant in a blaze of righteous fury, how dare a spin off exist
X/Y came out 2.5 years into 3DS's life as well.
Dunno why you think 8th Gen being next year will automatically save it from bring rushed.

Wow, here I am thinking all these years that Pokémon held the throne for casual JRPG franchise and yet here we are almost 60 pages in with a huge amount of people pointing at this game as "casual". Fascinating.

maybe they'll save the actual bikers for cycling road
Cycling Road is now just a regular Route. It seems that PokeRide replacing the bike in SuMo has carried over to this game.
Regardless of the gender of the character the post is barely different, they are just leaning more in the trailer, but the rocks and water are nearly identical to the leaked picture, it was real.
He's leaning more in the trailer because Pikachu is shoulder mounted, so he looks on Lapras's right and Pika looks on the left. If you have Eevee, a neutral stance will be held.
My guess is that they'll stick around regardless of whether or not they're in your party, in the same way the Rotomdex does. That way they could hang out in cutscenes but not detract from the gameplay itself. It's not like it's PokéLaw to only have 6 Pokémon on you at all times.
Apparently the PC has been removed? GS says boxed Pokemon are kept on your person.
not sure hwo this guy is but if this is true, I will laugh really hard:

you cannot evolve an eevee. Let that sink in for a bit.

The fact that you can catch wild Eevee makes that completely irrelevant.

So they kept the worst feature of Pokémon Yellow, not being able to evolve Pikachu, and chose Eevee "the evolution pokémon" to not evolve at all in the game too?

This is too good of a metaphor for Masuda's directing of the Pokémon IP.

Looks fun. Kinda iffy on some stuff, but TBH, the removal of wild Pokémon battling doesn't bother me too much since it was always kind of boring for me. Like, there was seldom a situation where I couldn't faceroll whatever was encountered, or use a status effect+false swipes/whatever to make it easy to catch.

We'll see. Lots of other variables to determine the net gain/loss of it all, IMO.

Why is it a terrible way ?

They put out a trailer, had a press conference and announced stuff on social media.

Pretty much marketing 101 in 2018.

Here's the thing, not every game is gonna appeal to you. Does Pokepark, Hey You Pikachu, or Pokemon Channel appeal to you? Probably not. They have their audiences and the main game is coming next year.

You wouldn't want the main game this year it would suck if it was rushed that fast, this is a game to tide us over for now. You don't have to like or buy it really. Me personally this is fantastic and I love all of what they are doing.

I've felt the games got way too complex and bloated in recent years and with this I can just have a simple game to pick up and play and have fun. I love the motion controls too, I've been wanting to throw a Pokeball in-game ever since Wii.
