I'm almost impressed that there are still people using the religion/culture-is-not-a-race defense.
It's not, but there are valid and invalid ways of criticizing such things. It delves into racism when terrible things promoted by specific sects, organizations, governments, or extremist local cultures are generalized as a trait of all or most Muslims. Any criticsm of Islam in general should come from criticsm of the Quran, and/or Mohammed himself. Or more general existence of God, or giving devine authority to books.

Reboot the show with literally everyone EXCEPT Rosanne. Change the name to "Dan" or something. Strip all of the both-sides bullshit out of it.

Absolutely. I never just blanket criticize every Muslim or every Christian, I criticize aspects of their religion and specific individuals or groups who do bad things influenced by that religion. I can say "the world would be better off without Islam" without meaning the world would be better off without Muslims (although without Islam I guess they wouldn't be Muslims).
You're skating on cracked ice. You're not even criticizing Islam here - just engaging in purile demagoguery. You're free to do that, but it's not an exercise of rights. Bigots engage in similar behavior.

Actually, do the whole kill by the elevator or put her brain into the dog and then reboot as "Dan."

That's what horribly racist people do to try and rationalize their bigotry. Since muslim is not a race like you like to preach, how about I just call you a bigot and save you the semantics?

It's an ABC show, chances are the vast majority of people working on it were union and will easily find another show to work on.

The biggest losers here (aside from Roseanne) are the cast mates who otherwise didn't have much going on.

Not all entertainment unions actually have a hiring hall, but to be honest if you're working on a show with a star this volatile, there's no way people on staff didn't already have their ear to the ground in terms of other options. Entertainment in general means a lot of people's livelihoods depend on the choices of just a small few, but that's what you sign up for.

Would hope some of the cast will get picked up elsewhere after the success of these episodes demonstrated at least some interest in them.

I expanded upon it in a later post because you're not the only one thinking I don't realize the semantic difference. It's just that it's this exact type of discussion that takes away from the core problem here, which is the, as you put it, invalid criticism. I know there's a difference, you know it, they know it, the problem is that they conflate religion, culture and race while referring to the semantic difference between the words and the rest of us take the bait and start talking language instead of message.

It really was a breathtakingly racist tweet. Just unbelievable. I'm sure he's been aware for a long time and this was simply the straw, but I'm imagining the ABC CEO looking at her Twitter feed for the first time, wondering if it was a once off, and just scrolling through with a growing look of horror on his face. "Cancel this shit, right now!"

Hahahahahaha!!!! You talk crap and you get the hammer Barr!
What the fuck are you talking about? Genocidal?! Are you referring to my post about thinking the world would be a better place without Islam? I do think that, yes. Along with Christianity, Scientology, Mormonism, and several others. But I then SPECIFICALLY said that does not mean I think the world would be a better place without the people practicing those religions (just some of them).
Hey thanks for singling me out in your rant. Really appreciate it.

Oh well I'm used to it lol! No worries at all!

That's silly. I am criticising Islam (well, I'm not specifically doing that here, but I'm saying I'm allowed to do that without being called a racist). If not, what am I criticising? I specifically said I don't criticise Muslims or Christians in general, I criticise the bad aspects of their religions (and specific individuals IF they do bad shit).

I'm just as critical of insane American Christian extremists. They're typically as white as me, so I doubt you're gonna call that racism? You only get called that when the religion you're criticising is predominantly non-white. Odd.

Bill Maher going on a tirade against American women dating Arab men is a prime example of self-described principled atheists revealing their true bigotry hidden behind purported theological objections.

Lol, come on, you know I was not referring to you with "some of them". I'm talking about IS, American Christian extremists full of hate, those kinds of people.

How were the ratings? I wonder if she was just so awful to work with that this was a great reason.

Either way, I actually enjoyed the show but am glad this was the outcome.

Nope, you don't get to fucking call me a bigot. You have NOTHING to base that on. All I've said is that it's OK to be critical of religion, which I am, no matter the skin color it's most often associated with. Islam and Christianity are both causing a lot of problems, although Islam more so currently here in Europe. That's a fact, and it has nothing to do with race.

You're leaning into this derail from a discussion about racist comments by repeating a deflection frequently employed by racists so it's entirely fair for people to be suspicious of your motives.

Yes, what?

1. The world would be a better place if Islam (and Christianity, and Scientology, etc) didn't exist, IMO.
2. That does not mean people who are Muslims and Christians shouldn't exist (except for IS and such)...
3. ...but #1 invalidates #2, because if there was no Islam or Christianity those people would not be Muslims and Christians. They would just be people.

What's the problem?

We need more of this.. racism should not be coddled or tolerated. Hold people accountable for their hatred.

Nice!

I'm going to laugh at all the Trump supporters crying about free speech while simultaneously shitting on the NFL players kneeling to protest injustice and police brutality towards PoC.

It's going to be some delicious ironing.

Roseanne's criticisms were clearly very racist. Her saying she's not racist because "Muslim r NOT a race" is even further racist, because the woman she's going after isn't Muslim. She just assumed she was because of, um, her race.

Given all that, what does any of what you're saying have to do with the actual topic this thread is about? This thread is about a racist. Making it about you and then getting upset because people are talking about racism is really weird.

Dude this thread has literally nothing to do with "criticizing Islam" as a religion. Literally nothing. That's not what happened, that's not what anybody here is commenting on, you're in the wrong place focusing on the wrong topic here and you're kinda hammering it to death.

I don't think you saw how it started? It snowballed way out of proportion, but when people say stuff I don't agree with, or even attack me, I've gotta respond.

Only because people keep attacking me, rather directly. Am I supposed to just not say anything? I never intended for this shit to take over the thread. If you take just one of my posts out of context I can understand that it looks weird as shit.

It should go without saying that it's good Disney is breaking off their relationship with Roseanne, but I don't think it is out of some sense of virtue. They would rather lose their short term revenue in the show's success than lose the image they have and the revenue they would lose long term in the fallout from consumers of their products and services.

I'm not calling you a bigot. I will call Bill Maher a bigot. I will call Richard Dawkins a bigot. I will call Sam Harris a bigot. They all essentialize Islam to something inherently violent, and the world needs more people to stand up against them for that particular stupidity.

Can't say I expected this. Some hand wringing, some radio silence, sure. But not outright cancellation. At least not this fast. Granted it was only a matter of time, but I thought we'd at least get to the 2020 season before the really racist, xenophobic conservative shit tweets started flying.

Alright, your response was to a post that was directly talking about me, so it looked like you were implying that. If not, I apologize for the misunderstanding.

Tim Allen better keep his head down.

Although, I'm expecting some of this ish

Whoa, this is incredible.

RoadHazard, no harm no foul. I was really thinking of some of my own IRL new atheist friends who've occasionally gone down too far the road of essentializing Islam as violent, scary, alien etc. in ways they never would about Christianity or Judaism.
