so, y'all know that feeling

you have put a lot of time into making a thread, and no one even posts in it. or maybe it got a lot of replies, but is now dying, and you want to keep it going for a bit longer

desperately, you try to keep it alive by bumping it yourself, responding to boring questions or quoting a lame joke with a "lol" just to keep the thread going

but we all know that is quite sad behaviour, right? at some point you just have to let it go and accept your thread's fate

so how many times can you bump your own thread before everyone will judge for being such a sad person? how late after creating it can you bump it?

no one would really begrudge you for bumping your own thread after a few hours. but where is the line drawn? can you bump it the next day? is that kosher? what about next week? or even next month

let me know what you think

Do the Phantom Thief method. Make 100 threads so you'll have at least a handful of active ones to make you feel good.

From what I see, I say you can bump it only once and it can be as long as you want after the last post.

One bump is fine - especially on fast moving forums like this one. If a thread needs more than that, I'd probably just let it die. lol

I respond extra late to any posts for that exact reason, lol
Then after that bump, if no one else cares, I just let it die

it's okay if no one replies mine, i can live with that. at least it makes me a bit more brave to say my opinion

Heh, I was really hoping the title was a mod edit.

Realistic answer: maybe once? This is a fast-moving forum. I've never made single thread here. I made maybe, three at GAF.

It depends. Like, I have a Wheel of Time thread, and I am reading the books as I post impressions, so even if its like 10 people who post in the thread, I feel like I have an obligation to bump it each time I finish a book. But if its a topic that no one wants to discuss, I just let it be.

My threads either crash and burn, or no one reads the OP.

Literally only the two possible outcomes.

As many times as you want OP. Sometimes you have something niche you want to discuss. Nothing's wrong with that.

This thread should be a good test experiment op.

Let's see how long you can keep it alive

Only 1 bump allowed.

Sometimes the board moves fast and its not your fault that your thread falls into the abyss. 1 bump is ok.

To go a bit off-tangent, I'm fascinated by necro-bumps. How do these users find these months or years old threads and why do they think it's a good idea to continue a conversation that was finished so long ago?

I wish no one had responded and OP had to bump his thread later. Y'all ruined it.

I like to be an active part of my thread's conversations, so I'll often bump my own thread a couple times just by responding to multiple posts over the course of its life

I do try and let things go when the topic has reached a natural end-point

You wait until someone comes along and posts. Might be years but that's how it goes. If you feel it's that important for it to be seen and it somehow passed thru the cracks, hit up a mod I'm pretty sure they'd "bump" it for you.

I have a song of ice and fire thread, we have nothing to discuss until the spinoff book and the final season next year and hopefully winds of winter 2019

protip: make multiple accounts and have them talk to each other to jumpstart the thread

seriously though 0 unless it's a thread thats news about something and there's a legitimate update to it to post or something like that

I'm okay with it because a thread can live or die by the time it's posted at. Like if you post something at the middle of the night US time it's definitely gonna get less activity, so it's fine to bump it later for a new audience to give it a new lease on life.

1 person liked my Score Attack game challenge thread.

I just have to guess everyone else likes badly written "cinematic" "gaming".

I would let it die after I felt I have compelled at least three people to post in it . I don't think that's sad , you just don't want your thread look like a failure.

I've only made like 4-5 threads and they all died miserable deaths. I give it a bump and that's it. No point in dragging corpses around.

Zero.

If no one finds it interesting, don't beat a dead horse.
This. I spent several work hours making a Last of Us LttP thread in GAF and no one replied. Literally no one. I didn't bump it, because it was clear nobody wanted to discuss it (or read the OP) at the time. Was I sad? Of course, I still feel bad about it and haven't made a thread since. But still I refused to bump it.

If you have something relevant to bump the thread with, theres nothing wrong with that. Just try to keep attention hogging to a reasonable degree lol
