How can people separate artist and entertainment whenwhen it comes to rap? Rap at its very best is interpersonal struggle. Like what will you guys do when Kanye starts rapping about how good Trump is?

I don't know. To be fair, I already have trouble separating art from the artist with actors in roles completely different from their normal personalities. I'm expecting more and more artists to be outed in the coming years (heard some bad rumors about the 90's rap scene).

I don't see myself buying a future Kanye album. It'll be hard listening to a past Brockhampton album.

It's bard especially if you've been a mega stan for him for years but it's possible. Trump talk will already be on this new album so I think it will be easy to finally be free of him. At least for me.

You're kidding yourself if you think his whole album isn't going to be on some ""free thinker"" bullshit.

The beats are gonna be fire tho, and i'm gonna hate how much I love it.

I still kinda think saying something a la "I still listen to Dr. Dre's music because he's at least making good music compared to XXX & Co" is worse than just outright separating art from artist since latter is at least not hypocritical and selective. I mean, think about it, what you'd be saying basically is that you're okay with someone beating their wife as long as the music's fire. That sounds worse than just listening to anyone regardless.

And where do you draw the line when you decide on a case-by-case basis? Will you guys boycott Dragon Quest XI because of the composer? Or only if the director was a nutjob? Or a certain percentage of the staff?

I'm definitely conflicted too. Like, fuck R. Kelly. But what about Ye? The shit Ye enabled by his ignorance was dangerous and I just wanna say fuck him, but man, let's be real, we'll all probably be the first to bump his new album. I didn't see anyone here boycotting Daytona either. And honest question, what about Ye's old albums, FZZ? You don't listen to them anymore? Though, thinking about it, maybe I actually could pass on his new album since I honestly haven't been excited for his music for quite some while now anyway since he seems to have lost the spark and sounds weak af on the mic too (been saying this since TLOP and way before his recent fuckery).

Man, I sometimes wonder what I would do if someone I still idolize like André or Dilla turned out to have done something really terrible. Like, fuck... never bumping their music again? I'd have no issue dropping any of these movie directors and actors, but with all-time favorite musicians whose work had such an immense impact on me from my childhood... damn. Tbh though, I don't think I would be too surprised if we heard a lot of our favorite rappers did some fucked up shit should the #metoo movement ever reach Hip-Hop. Btw, what happened with the Nas/Kelis thing? Haven't heard anything anymore.

But well, this topic is obviously too complex (for Complex) to do it justice in just a few sentences and I'm sometimes surely hypocritical too.

my thing is I'm still going to listen to the stuff Ye's got coming; he's one of my favourite musicians, and the stuff he's involved in are automatically some of the biggest releases of the year (just from a cultural in the moment kind of the thing, i feel obligated to listen to it. if only to understand whatever gold tweets come out of this). but everything he's said and done lately certainly dampens my hype about it

FZZ? You don't listen to them anymore?

I occasionally go back to TCD, LR, or 808s

because even if he never believed in what he was saying. It inspired people, thousands of people.

But that shit from arguably his best album MBDTF and onward? All that high luxury fame chasing shit? That's been out of the rotation since last year.

There's a reason I believe his best album is 808s, it was probably the last piece of work he had that wasn't indulged in everything he's become, that (let's be real) he's always wanted to become. He compares himself to egoists like Walt, Jobs, and Musk for a reason. He wants that platform and everything it brings and wants to pretend he is an innovator. He never went back to that 808s sound, and he probably never will. Cudi birthed that and he knows it.

He's an amazing producer and a mediocre rapper that released hypebeast shoes and failed at everything else fashion related. I hope that's what he's remembered for when it's all said and done.

edit: Graduation is trash, it was never in the rotation in the first place lmao. Fire singles tho

I thought I'd still be able to enjoy his past work but All Falls Down came on the radio the other week and I turned it off half way through, shit sounded fake and honestly kind of exploitative given who he is today.

As far as separating the art and the artist goes, it's always been a thing of hypocrisy but Vorheez is still kinda right. I can't think of another artist, let alone rapper, that could so brazenly embrace the far-right and still have people support them.

Gibbs vs Push would be straight BARS back and forth

Man imagine if Gibbs was given those Daytona beats instead of boring ass Push. Whew, would have had a classic

I like these Daytona beats more than the stuff Madlibs gave Gibbs for Pinata tbh. Reminds me of some of alchemists work
